Daily Lesson Plan Form

Subject: Algebra 1

Grade Level: 9th Grade

Mentor: Emily Spivey

Campus/District: Rockwall Date: 3/19/2015

High School/ RISD
Overall Goal of Lesson: Student will be able to solve Quadratic problem by taking the square root and
are able to solve for a variable when it has an exponent of a 2
Instructional Objectives: The student are able to solve Quadratic that does not have a middle term by
taking the square root.
Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) &
ELPS:(typed out completely)
111.39. Algebra I, Adopted 2012 (One Credit).
(c) Knowledge and skills.

Key Vocabulary:
Square roots
No Real roots

(8) Quadratic functions and equations. The

student applies the mathematical process
standards to solve, with and without
technology, quadratic equations and evaluate
the reasonableness of their solutions. The
student formulates statistical relationships and
evaluates their reasonableness based on realworld data. The student is expected to:
(A) solve quadratic equations having
real solutions by factoring, taking square roots,
completing the square, and applying the
quadratic formula; and
Higher Order Questions: Ask the student why our answer would be a positive and a negative when we
are taking the square roots. What does it mean when we are solving for x?
Student Activities: (Keep in mind the following: Scaffolding, Independent or Cooperative activities, Groupings, Reading,
Writing, Listening, Hands-On/Minds-On, Connections to previous knowledge, etc)
The student will contribute to lectures, some student will go up to the board to try an example problem while others will help
the student who is in the board if they need it as well ask partner sitting next to them to compare
answer.

SPED Modifications/ELL Strategies:

Modification to large print

Time Allotted
50 minutes

Anticipatory Activity for Lesson: Check ARB (a quickly

homework sheet that will help them for the big test) and
maybe a warm up to help refresh some algebra

Teacher Input/Lesson Activity: Will add on to the notes about solving quadratics taking the
square root as well as some example that will have interaction with the student.

Modeling: Lecture type/ interactive, will be on the board explaining how to take the square
root of a variable with an exponent. Example will model in class as well as having student
try one on their own.
Guided Practice: Practice problem will be given up in the board in which student will
participate and help solve the problems that is on the board.

Independent Practice: Student will be given an assignment that will cover problem similar to
the ones that were shown as an example on the board.
Lesson Closure: Ask the student when is the only time you can take the solve a quadratic by
taking the square root. As well as what does it mean when we have no real roots.
Assessment Methods/Strategies: Assigned handout with 12 problems that are similar to the
notes. If student do not complete the handout during class it will be homework. Homework
will be graded the next day
Resources (supplies, equipment, software, etc.):
White board, TI- 84 calculators, handout with assignment
Reflection: Walk around the classroom to make sure the student are working as well as understanding it.
If student needs help or do not understand will help them out. Based on seeing what student do and
struggle I can reflect on what I can do better in the next class as well as clarify it to the students.
