Verbs- 2nd grade

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify verbs and form a list of verbs in a given location independently.

TEKS: Oral and Written Conventions/ Conventions. 2.b21Ai

Students understand the function of and use the conventions of academic language when
speaking and writing. Students continue to apply earlier standards with greater complexity.
Students are expected to understand and use the following parts of speech in the context of
reading, writing, and speaking: verbs (past, present, and future).
Materials:

Videos about verbs

Chart paper
Manila paper
Notecards
Pencils

Anticipatory:
I will show a video about verbs called Lights! Camera! Action Verb!! This will allow students
to stand up and move around as they do the verb that the video tells them to. This is also the time
when we tell the students that verbs are important because they explain all the things that we do
as humans. At all times we are performing an action verb.
Instruction:
During the group discussion, teacher will make sure the students understand what a verb is. I will
model what verbs are by describing them and performing some of the actions. As teachers, we
will explain to the students that we expect them to understand what a verb is, be able to
recognize the verb in a sentence, and act out a given verb. After watching the video, students will
call out example of verbs that were not part of the video. A teacher will write those verbs on an
anchor chart. We will guide the activity by encouraging students to participate and call out verbs.
Guided practice:
Once the students are fully aware of what a verb is, the whole class will do an activity. Teacher
will have notecards with action verbs at the front of the room. The students will take turns
coming to the front of the room and acting out the verb written on the card. The rest of the class
has to guess what verb they are acting out. Once they guess the correct verb, the student who just
acted it out will choose the next student to come up and choose the next card.
Closure:

Teacher will remind the students what a verb is and give examples of what types of verbs the
students are currently doing. The teacher will also thank the students for participating in the
interactive lesson and video.
Independent practice:
.The teacher will introduce the independent work. We will explain how to fold the manila paper
into thirds and what title to write in each section. Then, we will give one example under the
Park School, and Home column. Finally, the students will have time to come up with as
many words as they can in each column on their own paper.
