Course Description:
The ELD Long Term English Language Learner (LTEL) course is an intervention course designed to
academically support students in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Reading will consist of
comprehending, interpreting, analyzing, evaluating, and appreciating literary and expository texts by using a
variety of strategies, through individual and group activities. Writing will incorporate projects and involves
both expository and narrative text. This course is designed to incorporate partner, small group and whole
group opportunities. Students will be expected to create projects that involve class presentations and other
forms of public speaking. The use of specific routines protocols and procedures are embedded to support the
access to the curriculum.

Course Objectives:
Students will develop full receptive and productive proficiencies in English in the domains of listening,
speaking, reading and writing.
Students will be taught challenging academic content that enables them to meet performance standards in
all content areas
Students will receive instruction that builds on their previous education and cognitive abilities and that
reflects their language proficiency levels.
Students will be evaluated with appropriate and valid assessments that take into account the language
development stages and cultural backgrounds of the students.

Course Skills Sets


Students Will:

distinguish between academic and conversational language.


analyze the connections between the texts and what is read using real world teen issues.
demonstrate how to paraphrase, analyze, evaluate, and summarize the information they read.
analyze figurative language, imagery, symbolism and identify elements of poetry.
analyze the meanings of complex words by using context clues, word knowledge and synonyms
use prewriting strategy skills based on specific audiences and/or purposes.
revise work using collaboration, conferencing, and self-evaluation.
respond to texts both orally and in writing.
develop skills in writing for various formats, including expressive and informational pieces as well as
using argument.
edit for language conventions and mechanics.
listen for meaning in conversations and discussions and effectively summarize them.
listen attentively as group members continue and use critical analysis to formulate appropriate oral
responses.
enhance ability to access information from a variety of sources and conduct independent research.

develop presentation cues and skills in front of an audience

Grading:
Students will be graded on a point system for weekly assignments. *Participation consists of coming to
class prepared with homework complete, books, notebooks, pens and pencils; ready to work as well as
participating in class and group discussions and activities.
