HILL 2

The Reading Nook is a very interesting website. It breaks down childrens

literature with regards to which subject that may be studied. For instance, science,
math, social studies, and language arts. In addition, it also provides an author of
the month category. This month, the author is H. A. Rey, the author who produced
the Curious George series. I found this feature of the site to be very interesting. It
also provides educational games and tips for parents and teachers with regards to
reading.

Non-Web Sources
1. Guillaume, Andrea M., Ruth Helen. Yopp, and Hallie Kay. Yopp. 50 Strategies for Active
Teaching: Engaging K-12 Learners in the Classroom. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson
Merrill Prentice Hall, 2007. Print.
In order to teach childrens literature, one must recognize which type of learning
environment that he or she is dealing with. If the environment is interactive,
which in my opinion it should be, then one might have students that want to share
their experiences or have a more hands on experiences about what they think is
literature.
2. Burden, Paul R. Classroom Management: Creating a Successful K-12 Learning
Community. 4th ed. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley, 2006. Print.
When a teacher is discussing the subject of literature, he or she might be inclined
to pass the book around or share pictures while reading it. In order to do this
though, there must be some classroom management. Classroom management will
allow for smooth transitions of the book from one student to the next.
3. Prelutsky, Jack, and Arnold Lobel. The Random House Book of Poetry for Children.
New York, NY: Random House, 1983. Print.
This book provides a plethora of ideas for children in poetry form. It offers
subjects of nature, seasons, weather, holidays, months, animals, and experiences. Most
of the poems are filled with rhyme which is an easy way to get the attention of any
child. It also provides noteworthy pictures that go along with each poem. These are
things that a child will need to learn at some point in his or her life. This book is
brilliant!
Evaluating Websites

HILL 3

Does the website contain an author? If so, who?

o The author of the website is important because this person created the site and if a
user has any questions, the author will be the primary person of contact. This
provides a means of credibility.
When was it published and by whom? When was the site last updated?
o This information is necessary because it also provides a means of credibility.
Knowing when the site was published and who it was published by, allows for the
user to properly cite from the source. In addition, if the user knows when the site
was last updated, he or she can avoid citing outdated information.
Is the information provided current?
Does the website contain any biases?
o This is important because there should not be any information on a site that is
opinionated. When a user is citing a source, he or she should only be citing facts.
Finding out if the website contains biases, allows the user to determine fact from
opinion.
Is contact information easily accessible?
o Contact information should be easily accessible in case that there are any
questions regarding the website. If not, the website is at risk of losing its
credibility.
Are there other sources cited on the particular webpage? (Credibility purposes)
o If there are sources that are properly cited on the website, it is likely that the
source is credible. Seeing other sources shows that the author of the website, has
done his or her own research on a particular topic.
