September24th,2014,at4:30PM.Aswediscussedinourindividualmeeting,youdidaverygoodjobin
yourobservedteachingandyoushouldbeproudoftheworkthatyouaredoinghereintheDepartmentof
English.AsasecondsemesterGraduateTeachingAssistant,Iwasimpressedwithyourabilitytolead
yourstudentstonewunderstandingsthroughcollaborationandnegotiationofmeaningandthrough
guideddiscussions.Overall,thiswasaverygoodclassandIcommendyouonyourworkasaGTA.
Belowaresomestrengthsofyourclassandsomesuggestionsforthefuture.
Thestrengthsofyourclasswere:
Youshowedstrongabilitytoguidediscussionsandnegotiateanswersinlargegroupswithout
losinggroupcontrolandwithouttakingover;yourstudentshadanimportantplaceinthemaking
oftheclassactivity,especiallywhenyoumovedtogroups.
Youmovedaroundthefrontoftheclassroom,makinggreateyecontactwithyourstudentsand
keepingthemontheirtoesbyaskingquestionsandwritingontheboardindifferentplaces.
Understandingandknowingyourstudentsnamesisimportantanditwasobviousthatyouknow
yourstudentswell.
Youdemonstratedconfidenceinyourteachingandwhenyouwereunsure,youletyourstudents
knowthatyouarenotinfallible.Atonepointyousaid,Iamnotsure,whichshowsyouare
human,too.
Youusedexcellentandnaturaluseofquestioningtomovetheclassalong,toclarifyconcepts,to
engagestudents,andtocheckcomprehension.
Youwerealwaysmovingaroundtheclassroom.Youractivityandenergywasfantastic,
especiallygiventhelatehouroftheclass.
Somesuggestionsforthefuture:
Althoughyoumadeexcellentconnectionswithyourstudents,muchofthetimetherewereabout
fiveorsixofthesamestudentsgivingtheanswersinthelargegroupdiscussion.Mostofthem
weremalestudents.Whatcouldyoudotoinviteotherstudentstoentertheconversationand
participatemoreactively?

ThiswasasolidclassandIthinkyoudidagreatjobincludingstudentsinnegotiatingthemeaningofa
thesisandincriticallyanalyzingthedifferentaspectsofcreatingone.Yourquestioningtechniquesare
solidandfunctionwelltoengagestudentsintheactivitiesathand.
