Title: Solar System

Name: Cali Proctor

Content Areas: Science

Grade Level: 5

Description
The students will be able to identify the planets in our solar system in order. They will also be
giving a presentation on a chosen planet in groups while using technology to assist them. They
will be making a glogster over their planet as well as a hanging model of the solar system.

Objectives
English 4.1a The student will be able to write and present over their specific planet in the
solar system.
Science 4.3e The student will will be able to locate and name all of the planets in the solar
system as well as give knowledge about the solar system and making a model of the entire
solar system.

Targeted Kansas Standards and NETS-S standards addressed

ELA-- SL.5.5

Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate
to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. (5ESS1-2)

Science 5-ESS1-2.

Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily

changes in length and direction of shadows, day
and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.

C/T 3-5.6c The student will use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a
variety of sources.

Technology resources and other materials needed (equipment and software)

1. Construction paper
2. Computers, Youtube, PowerPoint, Glogster

Preassessment
1. Describe pre-assessment here.

Anticipatory Set
1. Show students an example of a hanging model of the solar system. As you are showing
them play the youtube video of the solar system song and point to each planet as it is heard.

Input/Modeling
I will show the students a powerpoint that I have made of the solar system while they
take notes in a graphic organizer. I will do very basic facts such as size, history, the
surface etc.
1. Play video of song
2. Show powerpoint to students over solar system while they are filling out graphic organizers.
4. After you're done with the powerpoint, give students each a specific planet and have them
research everything about it
5. They will be able to make a glogster on their planet with what they want to present.
6. After they make their glogster, their homework (project) is to build their own hanging model
of the solar system labeling the planets.

Checking for Understanding

1. I will collect their graphic organizers as an indication to see if they get the gist of the solar
system. I will use their glogster and hanging model as the final assessment.

Guided Practice
1. While students are researching and making their glogsters, I will walk around making sure
they understand how to use the technology and that they are using is appropriately for the
assignment.

Differentiation
1. If a student is an ELL student I could use voki as a way for the directions or information to be
translated to the language that that student needs.

Independent Practice
I plan on the hanging model and research to be independent so that they are learning their
own information.
Lesson Closure/Post assessment
The students would stand up show their glogster and share one interesting fact that they
learned about their planet. This way it's a good assessment for me as well as a good
informational tool for the other students who had a different planet.

Reflection on Lesson
I would probably have to cut out making the hanging model because it might be too much for
an assignment but this would be over a weeks worth time.
