Assessment Plan/Philosophy
I believe that assessment in the primary classroom should be provided with the goal to
help children improve from where they are originally. Every student has a certain level of
understanding and knowledge, and as a teacher, our role is to help them to gain more
understanding and knowledge from what they had to start with. In other words, not one student
is the same and our main goal is not get them all to the same level of understanding but to help
each individual student improve. Assessment is so oral language based, that most of my
assessment will be done through observations, and conversations with my students. Some
information will be collected through worksheets and drawings that the students do as well.
As I stated already, most of my assessment will be made through observations,
conversations with students, and then the collection of some of their work. I will be making notes
about each student, and what I am noticing about their learning. I will also be creating an
observation chart for each of my units that will have each student's name, a checklist for
concepts that they understand, and a space for me to make observational notes. For our science
and social studies units I will also be collecting some work, and taking pictures of the students
participating in some of our activities. In math, I will be putting together math centres to help
individualize their learning, and hopefully be able to spend one on one time with students
assessing their achievement. During these centres, students will have a log book where they will
be responsible to keep track of what they have done at their math centre.
I am going to be trying to implement some of the strategies around the assessment model,
"Understanding by Design." I have tried my best to design my units around making sure that the
key concepts of my unit address the PLOs I have chosen to teach. Along with designing my unit
to address the PLOs, I will be assessing students in relation to whether they have achieved those
outcomes. Along with that, I will be making sure students know what we are trying to
achieve/learn each lesson by providing them with a learning goal. While trying to use some of
the ideas from the model, "Understanding by Design," I will also be assessing students
formatively and summatively.
I plan to use a binder to keep students work that shows that they have met their learning
outcomes. I also will use the binder to keep my observation sheets. This binder will be where I
keep my notes on both the academics as well as student's social responsibility.
