John Paul Jones- who- a naval officer who raided British ports

Why significant- made jones a hero of the patriots

The "Swamp Fox"-

Newburgh Conspiracy- what- soldiers in Newburg and New York felt they should be paid while they
waited for the peace treaty to be signed and threatened to use force if they didnt receive it.
Where- Newburg and New York
When- demands were sent in March 1783
Why significant- because Washington felt that if their demands were not met the new nation could
be destroyed

Battle of Yorktown- what- a surprise attack on the British from the Americans/France
Where- Yorktown
When- British surrendered on october 19, 1781
Why significant- the americans captured all 8,000 british troops and took 200 guns. Made british
realize the war was too costly

Nathaniel Greene- who- commander of the continental forces in the south

Where- half of his army defeated Britain in Cowpens, SC and the others joined Marions raids
When- became commander in October 1780
Why significant- made Cornwallis give up on conquering the carolinas
Treaty of Paris-

Friedrich von Steuben- who- was an officer in the Prussian army he helped Washington train troops
Where- trained in valley Forge
Why significant- made continental army into mare of an effective fighting force

Battle of Saratoga- what- battle between the british and the patriots
When- surrendered on October 17, 1777
Where- Saratoga, New York
Why significant- the patriots messed up the britishs plans and changed the course of the war

B. Of all the patriot leaders we learned about in this unit, which do you think most helped the patriot
cause?

C. Throughout the Revolutionary War, Washington succeeded in holding his army together, despite
many difficulties. One of these difficulties was political meddling. Continental Congress often
interfered with his military operations. During the gloomy winter at Valley Forge, some members of
congress and army officers plotted to replace Washington as commander in chief. How might
Washingtons removal or resignation have affected the war?
