Act 3, Scene IV
Polonius and Gertrude suspiciously muttered regarding Hamlets
behavior in the queens chamber. Gertrude, the Queen of Denmark, thought
anxiously to herself. She had not been able to see clearly ever since the
Kings death, and his presence along with Hamlets irrational behavior
continued to haunt her.
They heard a voice getting closer and closer to them asking, Mother?
Mother?. This was the voice of Hamlet, eager to criticize his mother.
Polonius rushed to hide behind the curtain, hoping to eavesdrop on most of
the conversation. Hamlet barged in, nearly breaking the glass vase next to
the door. He began to feel a sudden anger, confused in whether he should
direct it to his mother or simply himself.
Gertrude seriously answered Your father would be very disappointed
in you. She was unable to express her real concern regarding Hamlets
wellbeing.
But more disappointed in you, Hamlet answered in a sarcastic voice.
The queen then asked Whats wrong? Why have you been acting so
strange lately?
Well, you are the Queen, you married your husbands brother, and
you are still my mother, Hamlet screamed, trying to show his mother that
he was very upset the only way that he could.

Well, if you would just listen to me, the Queen rambled on. At this
point, Gertrude was lost in her thoughts; she did not know what to do next.
Hamlet, quickly enraged at his mothers apparent ignorance, yanked
the Queens hair, positioned his sword across her neck, and threatened to
murder her.
Polonius, attentively listening behind the curtain, shouted Help!,
aware that his position of power was mainly dependant on the Queen.
Hamlet, now passionately determined to avenge his father, mistakes
Polonius cry as the Kings, and with a quick thrust of his sword, stabs and
kills Polonius through the curtain. His anger and feeling of betrayal that he
felt towards his mother crept over his entire body, only building and building
upon itself.
The Queen, shocked, asked What have you done? Polonius had been
the only person who really tried to understand her after the Kings death.
That was the king, right? Hamlet answered in a calm tone.
Polonius corpse dramatically fell through the curtain of Gertrudes
chambers.
Youre a cold blooded murderer, the Queen accused Hamlet. She
meant every word of it.
Not as cold blooded as that time you married my fathers brother, he
contested, even more angry than before. You deserve every piece of this
pain and sorrow, he said to his mother.

Why have you been so rude to me? What have I done but protect our
family?, the Queen declared. She knew that explaining herself would be
useless.
You married Claudius, only a few months after my fathers death. My
father, the true King, was a far better man than Claudius will ever be. Why
did would anyone marry him? Hamlet bitterly explained.
The Queen, in dismay, now asked Hamlet Why dont you stop? Stop
the harassment, the accusations, and the anger you have directed at me. I
cant bear it any longer! Leave me be, I need rest.
Hamlet stormed out of Gertrudes chambers, only more persuaded to
kill Claudius.
