WRITING WORKSHOP:

Unit of Study: Readers Can Be Their

Own Teachers!

Unit of Study: Persuasive & Opinion

Writing

All year long I have been teaching the

students all of the strategies that help them
to tackle tricky words while understanding
their story. I also let them know when they
need to use a strategy. In this unit the
students are going to learn to be their own
teacher!
When they come to a tricky word I will
encourage them to say:
I can solve this myself!
Please celebrate this unit with me and
encourage your child to give it a try by
himself before you read the unfamiliar word.
If the word your child is stuck on is a trick
word (cant be sounded out) please tell them.

This is such a fun writing unit. It is a time

for the student to write about things that
they like. They will write persuasive pieces
stating their opinions about their favorite
collections, favorite toys, favorite places,
favorite restaurants and favorite movies. I
have attached a letter to this newsletter
explaining the importance of having your
child bring in his/her favorite collection. I
promise you they will take great care of the
collection. Placing the collection in a shoe
box is helpful and makes the collection feel
so special!

Thank You!!

FUNDATIONS:

Thank you for taking the time to

celebrate your child and his/her writing.
It was so nice to see you and your child
enjoying his/her work. I am very proud
of the progress each child is making. We
will invite you again toward the end of
the year for another celebration.
However, you are always welcome to
come in and visit. You can join us for any
part of our day!
Thank you also for all of the goodies. We
snacked on them all day!
.

Unit 8 focuses on the difference between a

blend and a digraph. A digraph contains two
consonants and only makes one sound. Ex.
/sh/ /th/ /ch/
A blend contains two consonants but each
makes its own sound.
Ex. br st cl mp
Blends can be found at the beginning of a
word or the end.
Ex. Brag / camp
shr in shrimp is a digraph blend because it
has a digraph and then an added consonant .
Unit 9 focuses on Closed Syllables and
introduces vowel teams.

skip count. This work will prepare them for
the work of comparing numbers in the next
chapter.
Chapter 7 will focus on comparing numbers.
The students will learn to use the
greater than > symbol,
the less than < symbol
and the equal to = symbol to compare numbers.
We will continue to practice using our addition
and subtraction strategies to solve problems.

Exciting News!!
Ms Capatosto and I were awarded a grant from the Springs Booster Club a PTA
sponsored group. We wrote a grant titled: Fitness Fun! Our grant will afford our
students in Kindergarten and 1st grade the opportunity to use fitness equipment at
recess time. Some equipment includes: mini basketball hoops, tennis racquets,
soccer balls and mini nets, scooter bikes, and a huge parachute. We ordered
equipment that would help our students for indoor recess as well.
(we sure have had a lot of indoor play lately)
We will be sure to add photos of the kids playing when the equipment arrives.
