Art Lesson Plan

Lesson: Stained-glass Mosaic Earths

Standards:
CSS: Visual Arts 1.2. Art represents and renders the stories of
people, places or things.
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to artistically represent the
planet Earth by integrating what students have learned about the
planet Earth and how it appears.
Goal for Leaners: It is my goal that students will be able to represent
the planet Earth in their own way but also integrating what they know
and have learned about Earth throughout this unit.
Learning Principles: I believe that students learn best through
hands-on learning experiences that are also engaging. I believe that
the artistic nature of this activity will lead to high levels of student
engagement with this project. Additionally, they will each have the
opportunity to make their own Stained-glass Mosaic Earths, so they will
each have that hands-on experience.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to create an artistic
rendering of the planet Earth.
Setting: This lesson will take place in our classroom (room 107). The
first part of the lesson in which I will introduce the activity will take
place at the front of the room on the carpet with the whole group. The
second part of the lesson in which the students will create their Earths
will take place at their table groups.

Dismiss students back to table groups to get started on projects

Pass out pre-cut wax paper with circles traced on.
Tell students to rip up the tissue paper into small pieces.
Recommend that students plan where the tissue paper should go
(based on what they know/have learned about the Earth).
Glue down the pieces of tissue paper in the appropriate areas on
the bottom sheet of wax paper.
Glue a piece of wax paper on top of the tissue paper to sandwich
the tissue pieces in between two pieces of wax paper.
Cut out the circle, punch a hole in the top, and tie ribbon
through.
Hang the Earths up in the window to let the sun shine through
like stained-glass.

Differentiation: I will work at a table with D to give him extra

guidance throughout the project. L should be able to do this project on
her own, but I will frequently check in with her at her table to ensure
that she is focusing and working at an appropriate pace.
Assessment: I will collect the Earths when they are finished (before
hanging them up) to ensure that each student was able to complete
their art project.
Extensions: Students will be encouraged to take pictures of their
Earths and post them to their Kidblogs if they finish early.
