Teen Abortions

One fourth of the teenagers who get pregnant end the pregnancy in divorce. 2006 data shows that
most pregnancies (82%) are unintended and of that number 2 out to 5 get an abortion. They get
abortions because the fear that having a baby will cause them problems with achieving their
personal goals, meeting financial responsibilities, or being mature enough to manage the
responsibility of motherhood. Trends Teen abortion showed an increase in 1970 and smoothed
out in the 80s with data showing 43 out of 1000 females ages 15 to 19 getting an abortion. By
2010, those numbers showed more decrease to 15 out of 1000. Abortions at all age groups have
shown a decrease in present years. Abortion rates for all ages have shown a decrease for all
white, black and Hispanic females; however, the decline for Hispanic population of teens starter
later. Data shows a decrease to 74% with white teens, 63% for Hispanics, and 57% for blacks.
The drop is related to the number of teen pregnancies. Differences by age
Older teens have a tendency to get abortions at a higher rate than younger teens. In 2010, the rate
for teens under 15 was 2.5 of 1,000, 8.4 of 1,000 for teens 15 to 17, and 23.7 of 1,000 teens 18 to
19. Although the abortion rate is higher with older teens, the proportion of pregnancies that end
in abortion is twice as high among those younger than.
Differences by race and Hispanic origin . More blacks get abortions than whites and Hispanic. In
2010, there were 34.5 abortions per 1,000 black females ages 15-19, 8.5 per 1,000 white
adolescent females, and 15.3 per 1,000 Hispanic adolescent females. Abortion rates with black
adolescents have fallen more than have rates for the other groups.. The later in the pregnancy the
abortion takes place, the higher the risks. Around 10% of the women who get an abortion have
immediate problems and 2% are life threatening.Immediate health risk
Women who get abortions are more likely to die in the following year than women who carry
there babies to full term. Two percent of the women may have uterine perforation which often is
not diagnosed and goes untreated. The perforation is found out when a woman has a procedure
called laparoscopic visualization. Women in the first trimester may get cervical lacerations that
cause them to need sutures. Lacerations that are less severe called micro fractures are usually not
treated and may cause the woman to have long term reproductive damage or trouble trying o get
pregnant in the future. Some may have pelvic inflammatory disease which is cause by the
woman already having chlamydia at the time of the abortion. Data shows that 20 to 27% of
patients who get abortions have a chlamydia infection. Also, data shows that 5% of the women
who did not have chlamydia at the time of the abortion will develop it after about 4 weeks. The
woman may develop Endometritis infection after a first trimester abortion. First trimester woman
has a percentage of 5%, but women in the mid-trimester is at 18%. Endometritis is a risk for all
women, but especially for teens who are 2.5 times more likely than women to get endometritis.
