TrocmhadjustbeenpromotedtoHeadmasterandwas
takingtheschoolunderhiswing.HehadbeenthesmartestmanI
knewthen,andthekindestmanIknownow.Heismyhero,and
writinghisstorydownismywayofrememberinghim.
Itwas1941.Iwasbarelysixteenandhadjustbeenrescued
byOSE.UponmyarrivalatLesGrillons,Iwasgreetedbyatall
manwithroundglasses.Hehadasternlookabouthim,yetby
theendofourshortmeeting,Iknewthismanwaspossiblyone
ofthemostfascinatingandcultivatedpeopleIhadevermet.He
stretchedouthishandtome,anactfewFrenchmenwouldhave
doneforaJew,butDaniel
Trocmwasnotseparatedbylabels
andreligionhewasagentlemanwhocaredforall.
TimepassedandmydailylifeatLesGrillonsbecame
routine.IgrewclosetomanyoftheJewishoccupantsandbecame
thankfultobeworkingforDanielTrocm.
AtnightIwouldsee
himworkingbydimcandlelight,repairingchildrensshoeswith
bitsofrubbertire.InthemorningsIwouldevenseehimcarry
thechildrenssouphemadehimselfashewalkedtwokilometers
uptotheschool.
AyearpassedandDanielwasofferedtheHeadmasterjobat
LaMaisondesRoches,whichheaccepted.However,thiswasnot
thelasttimeIsawhim.Hecamebackandvisitedusayear
lateronJune29,1943,hopingtoseethechildrenhehadhelped
raise.Ironically,thiswasthesamedaythattheVichyPolice

hadstormedintoLaMaison,hopingtocatchJewswhichthey
didandtheirinstructor.Daniel,whohadbeenwithuswhenhe
heardthenews,hadachancetorunaway.Thatnightwewentup
tohimandinformedhimthatnobodywouldjudgeifhefled,and
returningwouldmeandeath.Daniel,however,didnotseeitthis
wayheknewthatitwashisdutytoreturntothechildrenhe
sworetoprotect.
HeandhiseighteenstudentsfromLesMaisonwerebrought
tothecityofMoulinswheretheywerekeptwithlittlefood,
littlewater,andlittlehopeforescape.MyfriendsandIlater
gotwordthatDanielhadbeenmovedtothecampinCompigne,
France.Hisstudentswerenotasluckymonthslatertheywere
separatedandbroughttolaborcampswheretheywereshotand
killed.Danielsstrugglescontinuedwhenhewasbeing
transportedtoacampinMajdanek.He,alongwithhundredsof
othersickmen,wereforcedtowalkhundredsofmilestoaplace
whichwouldbringevenmoredeath.
IwaseighteenyearsoldwhenIgotthenewsofDaniels
death.HehadnotmadeittoMajdanek.Hehaddiedonthemarch
there,hisbodyleftatthesideoftheroad.Hediedin1944at
theageofthirtyfour.Daysafterhearingthis,Ibecame
inspiredtolookintothelivesofthosewhohelpedmesurvive
theHolocaust.
RogerLeForestier,themanwhohadcreatedthefalse
identificationandrationcardthatIhadbeenhandedmyfirst
dayatLesGrillons,wasarrestedandthenshotonAugust20,
1944.Ihadneededthosepapersfivetimesforeverytimethe
VichyPolicehadinspectedtheschool,so,inaway,IoweRoger
LeForestierfivelives.

AndrTrocm,whowasthereasonDanielwas
theHeadmasterofLesGrillonsinthefirstplace,wasforcedto
gointohidingafterbeingaccusedofshelteringJews.Hecame
outdaysbefore
LeChambonsurLignonwasliberatedonSeptember
3,1944.
Irespectthe
Trocmfamilysomuch,becauseevenwhenthe
worldseemedtobefillingwithdarkness,theykepttheirtown
andthoseinsideofitsafe.
