Tyrannies of Being a Women in Society
Today in the United Stated and in the other countries around the world, we live amongst
various amounts of diversities. Diversities comes in many shapes and sizes. To cultural
diversities, skin color, personalities, traits, religion, and so on and so forth. Although there are
many amounts of diversities than the ones listed, there are also vigorous amounts of tyrannies
that we are faced with in the world today due to these diversity. Which then includes, religious
wars, military life compared to civilian life, social class diversities, racism, and etc. With all the
different amounts of tyrannies that we are faced with, the one tyranny that I have a bone to pick
with is equality for women. Women today and throughout history, have had to face many unfair
treatment due to the gender norms set by society and the male species. Throughout history we
have seen many movements towards equality for women, but from what I have seen, there are
still inequality amongst women in todays society.
There are many people out there who are suffering from the uncurl tyrannies of equality,
dont get me wrong, but as a young women myself who is advocating for the same equality as
men that many women through history have, being a young women growing up in todays
society of male dominance, I feel that it is important for not only myself, but for the women and
the young women growing up to be a women of our society, to see our importance and our worth
and value. And with that being said, it is a huge importance to target the males of society today,
the ones that will soon be joining society today, and to the younger generation, that women are
just as equal as they are and that the sexist sayings like "you cant do it, youre just a girl" should
not be brain washing the males today causing inequality amongst women. Why I feel the
importance to target the young generation is because they are willing and open minded to new
things. I believe there is truth to this statement due to the fact that young children have curious
minds. And as expert statistics says that, Children learn the most from birth to the age of ten.
(Jindrich). That is why it I important to teach toddlers about equality because like the saying
goes, you cant teach a dog new tricks.
In history books or on documentaries, we have seen many radical movements made by
some historical women throughout history. One huge step towards women equality is the
implement of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution. This Amendment was, Passed by
Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment guarantees all
American women the right to vote.(National Archives) Although we can see some forward
movements throughout history to make women equal in our society, women will always face
equality rights for years to come.

Inequality starts at a very young age. It starts on the playgrounds at recess when you least
expected it. When growing up myself as a little girl myself, I experienced firsthand what
inequality that women and girls are faced with. Since I was a little girl, I was not your typical,
Barbie girl. I did not like to play dress up nor liked pretending to have tea parties with my
stuffed animals. The color pink and purple was never seen on me or in my wardrobe and I most
definitely till this day, do not like to wear dresses or make-up unless it is special occasions and
still I would be forced to wear one. Yes, as you can see I was your typical, Tom boy. I
preferred to play with the boys at recess than to sit and gossip with the girls. I would ask for boy
toys in my happy meals than girl toys because they were much more amusing to play with. I also
loved to watch and participate in playing sports. I have played many types of sports such as
basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball, track, and flag football. Even if I equally loved to play
each sport, the one sport I loved to watch was football. Which leads me to my first encounter of
this tyranny of inequality between the male and women sex.
In school at recess we were allowed to pick what sport we wanted to play for the time
that we were allowed to, one of the options that where available was football. When the bell rang
me along with other boys ran to the football field. Upon making the teams, I was always the last
person to be chosen for the teams. It was not because I was bad at playing football, trust me
when I say I had an arm like a cannon, hands like supper glue, and I was fast like lighting. Even
if I was scoring touchdowns from left to right and getting interceptions, I still was the last to be
picked because I was a girl. This was not the first and last of these encounters. The one that I
remembered the most was when I ran into some neighbor hood boys playing tackle football and
because I played with them in school, I thought that they would allow me to play with them
again. When I asked to play they said, Sorry not this time, tackle football is not meant for girls,
you can get hurt. What made me mad was not that he said that tackle football was not meant for
girls, but what made me made me mad was that he told me, How about you stand off to the side
and be a cheerleader. I never quite understood the stereotypic sayings like the one in the movie
called, The Sandlot, when Ham Porter said to Phillips when they were arguing at the sandlot
which was a baseball field after Phillips insulted Ham by saying, You bob for apples in a toilet!
And you like it! Ham came back with an insult saying, You play ball like a girl! Since that
day, it was made clear to me that I will have to deal with inequality throughout my life.
Although some men will disagree that women do get treated as equal as them or maybe
treated even more better than they are because they are women, which holds some truth to that
statement because women do get treated differently and sometimes shown more respect because
they are women, I still feel there is room for improvement in aiming to a more equal society for
both men and women. With the many movements throughout history like the Womens Rights
movement that started off in the 19th century and with the many Women Rights unions and
organizations, Women till this day is still being treated as an unequal all around the world. Till
this day, some women in other countries are not allowed to work nor are girls allowed to go to
school. In order for women to emerge form the gender norms set for women has to start with the

women itself. Women needs to advocate and rise from there silence and demand the same
equality that men get and that we need to show society that we are not just baby makers or
homebodies, but that we are an equal and that what we do has worth to it.
