Access- Obtaining what you need.

Sentence: Web access is having a connection to the World Wide Web through an access
provider or online service provider.
Ex: Web Access, Data Access

Backup- copying files or databases so that they will be saved in case of equipment failure.
Sentence: I used Dropbox to back up my homework because my computer has been crashing
lately.

CC (Carbon Copy): a copy of an email sent to an addressee other than the main addressee.
Sentence: I sent an email of the work we completed to the team leader and a carbon copy to
all the team members.

Data- is information that has been translated into a form that is more convenient to move or
process.
Sentence: I entered all the data from the budget into Microsoft Excel so I wont have to carry
around all those papers.

E-mail- messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to a recipient
through a network.
Sentence: I sent an e-mail to my grandma with all the pictures from the family reunion
attached.

File- piece of information available to the operating system and other individual programs.
Sentence: I saved the file of my communications catalog in my folder for my Business
Communications class.

Gigabyte (GB) - a measure of computer data storage capacity that is roughly equal to 1 billion
bytes
Sentence: I bought the phone with 32GB because the phone with 8GB wouldnt be able to hold
all my photos from the family reunion.

Hacker- A programmer that breaks into others computer systems.


Sentence: The hacker got into my personal files and stole my credit card information to buy
expensive things.

iCloud- an Apple email, storage and data synchronization subscription service that allows users
to store and synchronize digital content across iOS-supported devices.
Sentence: Every Apple device comes with iCloud previously installed so users can use it for
additional storage when needed.

Joule- the standard unit of energy in electronics


Sentence: Joules are often used in physics to measure how much energy an object has.

Keyboard- the primary text input device.


Sentence: As I was finishing up the last page of my paper my keyboard began to stop working;
it turned out that I just had so plug it back in.

Laptop- personal computer smaller than a desktop that can easily be transported and
conveniently used in temporary spaces
Sentence: I carry my laptop with me when I travel because its easier than packing and
unpacking my desktop every time I leave the house.

Malware- program or file that is harmful to a computer user.


Sentence: I installed an anti-virus on my computer to protect me from the malware that I got
from downloading music.

Netiquette- the correct way of communicating on the Internet.


Ex: Not spamming others, Respect others privacy

Operating system (OS)- program that manages all other programs in a computer.
Ex: Windows, iOS

Page- What is printed on a single piece of paper.


Sentence: After I typed my paper it was a total of 6 pages, so instead of printing it out I emailed
it to my teacher.

Queue- a line of people or things waiting to be handled


Sentence: On Netflix if you see a movie you want to watch you add it to your instant queue to
watch later.

RAM (random access memory)- place in a computer where the programs and data in current
use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor
Sentence: My computer unexpectedly crashed, but the document I was working on was saved
on the RAM.

Speech- a form of communication, made by a speaker to an audience for a given purpose


Sentence: In class, I gave a speech on teen depression, its symptoms, and how you can deal
with it.

Teleconference- telephone meeting among two or more participants


Sentence: Because all of the employees live on different parts of town and complete their work
on the computer, we usually have teleconferences to discuss the months work.

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) - unique address for a file that is accessible on the Internet
Sentence: Because our tests and quizzes are online, the teacher usually gives out the URL
where we can login and complete the test/quiz.

VCR (videocassette recorder) - device for recording and playing back visuals on cassettes
Sentence: I used to watch movies on VCR before DVD was invented.

Web Browser- application program that provides a way to interact with all the information on
the World Wide Web.
Ex: Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox

X Window System- windowing system for bitmap displays


Sentence: The X windows system on my laptop makes everything easier to read and navigate.

Yahoo- American multinational technology company that provides various services such as the
Yahoo search engine and Yahoo Mail.
Sentence: The default search engine on my laptop is Yahoo because they provide a large
variety of resources.

Zip code- group of five to nine numbers that are at the end of a postal address to assist in the
sorting of mail.
Sentence: Carry sent me the address for her sleepover, and she must live close because we
have the same zip code.
