Health Promotion Reflection

Title of work Sample:

Health Promotion Standards #2 - Collaboration

Internship Level I: Group Fitness

Date completed:

2015 - Spring Semester

WORK SAMPLE
During the Internship Level 1, Kasandra Legate and I were assigned to teach a fitness
class, foam rolling, at the Platteville High School to about 25 students.
Health Promotion Standard Alignment
I am aligning this experience with Health Promotion Standard #2: Collaboration: The
health promoter fosters relationships with professional colleagues, clients and agencies in the
larger community to support client learning and well-being.
I used this standard because Kasandra and I had to collaborate in multiple ways: We
designed our instructions together, we arranged to obtain the foam rollers from the HHP
department and the football teams office, we had to know the procedures for entry into the
Platteville High School and we had to arrange and time our transportation back and forth from
campus to the high school to meet our class schedules.
Further evidence of collaboration is that Kassandra and I taught two completely different
lessons of foam rolling. Kassandra taught foam rolling of the lower body, and I taught foam
rolling of the upper body. The two sessions were integrated by asking questions in the second
session about the first session.

Aligned KSD: KS2.c. Manages Worksite Procedures/Protocols
Security protocols now present in public schools were new to me. I gained a better
understanding of the protocol for the new security systems at schools. These systems were new
to me because there were none in place when I was in grade school or high school. After the first
day, I carried a student ID card with me when we taught foam rolling. When I checked in at the
office, I noticed that they were expecting me and that I needed to check in and out after coming
and leaving the school. I have become more aware of the security systems in place and will be
prepared to comply with these systems when I come in contact with them.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
In reflection, Kassandra and I have compatible work ethic; both of us were committed to
doing the best that we could together. Our collaboration demonstrated to me that I could trust my
fellow classmates who also want to do their best and are willing to collaborate. Collaboration
made for easier teaching and produced a better product.
Collaboration was evident by both of us sharing our independently gathered resources for
foam rolling. We allowed each other to choose what we wanted to teach in our separate sessions.
I have become a better presenter when I am able to trust my colleagues.
I need to become more aware of detail and to pay more attention to detail. I had forgotten
to bring my evaluation form for my session with me, this cost me two extra trips to the High
School to get the evaluation form completed. I am becoming more organized and will be
following directions more closely.
I saw one way of handling discipline in class. At the start of the class, several young men
were jousting with the foam rollers, as young men will do. Kassandra approached them, stepped
in and brought them into compliance. I was impressed with her actions because it could have
been disruptive. I will remember her course of action and use it when the situation presents itself
and mimic her tactic.
I had projected that everyone like to dance and this was not the case for this group of
students. I need to become more aware that dancing is not enjoyed or comfortable for many
people. I had introduced dance as a warm up to my teaching; this was Over the Top for the
class. Many of the students were unwilling even to do the basic step. My reflection is that it is
necessary to talk with a teacher/supervisor to share your lesson plans to make certain that the
group you are about to teach is ready or capable to accept your material. In addition, I will be
more aware of introducing dance in a less threatening manner to groups I teach in the future.
Self-Learning
1. I need to pay attention to directions and follow them. The example of the forgetting the
evaluation form serves this purpose.
2. Prior to the assignment, I had never heard of Foam Rolling and my immediate response
was to raise my hand and make request to trade the assignment; my request was declined.
After researching foam rolling and finding out that it may give the same results as a

massage, I am glad that I taught the subject. Learning that the Platteville Football Team
used the foam rollers also confirmed that it was of value. In addition, I witnessed several
wrestlers using foam rollers while I was passing in the hallway. This further confirmed to
me that there was value in foam rolling. In the future, I will more receptive to new ideas.
3. This opportunity allowed me to explore something new, foam rolling, and, to put
something new in my toolbox to teach when the opportunity offers itself.
