Awareness and Understanding of Mental Illness

About 40% to 50% of people with major depression are unemployed and 80% to 90% of people
with schizophrenia are also currently unemployed. More that half of employers will not hire
someone who is mentally ill while a quarter of employers will dismiss someones mental illness.
Not only do people have to deal with their own mental illness but also deal with the social
stigmas placed on those mental illnesses. Ive been diagnosed with severe depression and have
struggled with it for seven years as well with anxiety, and I believe there is such a lack of
understanding of what its like to be mentally ill.
Struggling with depression throughout my middle school and high school years was difficult as
my inability to succeed in simple tasks such as homework or attendance fleeted and dealt with
the consequences there after. This has now followed me to my college life and the pressures of
school have made my coping much more difficult. 95% of school counseling program directors
have stated that the amount of mentally ill students has been a growing concert. Being a mentally
ill college student is a difficult circumstance as the demanding expectations become
overwhelming and it has become more apparent throughout campuses. There is such a necessity
to raise more awareness in regard to mental illness and we need to be more spoken about it since
it has become a taboo topic that enforces social stigmas. These social stigmas have led many
people to isolate or neglect mentally ill people who already deal with self-neglect and
detachment. The mistreatment of family members, the dismissiveness of teachers, and the
misunderstanding of friends or peers can push mentally ill people over the edge into a dangerous
mental state. My mental instability prevented me from reaching my full potential or completing
responsibilities ,and the lack of support, understanding from my family, teachers, and friends
made my circumstances much more difficult to bare with.
After several years of psychological treatment, multiple refills of zoloft, and a suitcide attempt
later, people still don't know about my struggles because its not visible, therefore leading to
assumptions that im normal and healthy. These assumptions are common from teachers and
friends who assume everyone is mentally stable and healthy. I believe there should be more open
communication and resources available for mentally ill people to share their experiences and
their state of mind in order to work effectively towards getting better. Mental illnesses such as
borderline disorder, dissociation, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia are even more prone to
erasure and carry the most social stigmas. We need to talk more about our experiences with
others in order to make this topic more common in society. Mental illness kills people just like
any physical disease such as cancer would and we deserve proper treatment and care.
