1) Calculation of rated voltage (Ur)

Highest System Voltage (Um) = 363kV
Earth fault factor
Hence,

= 1.4 for effectively earthed

Ur= (363/3)* 1.4
= 293.4 294kV

2) Selection of line discharge class on basis of NDC & energy handling capability
NDC= 10kA
Energy handling capability requirement= 5kJ/kV
As per catalogue we have blocks with 6kJ/kV & 10kA NDC under line discharge class
3
Hence Line discharge class is 3.
Selection of LA from catalogue for 294kV rated voltage and under class3.
Surge arrester model is ZLA3235.

3) Calculation of protection margins.

a) For switching impulse
Ues= 850kV
Uas= 615 (for ZLA3235)
Protection margin= ((850/615)-1)* 100 = 38.21%
b) For lightening impulse
Uel= 950kV
Ual= 750kV
Protection margin= ((950/750)-1) * 100 = 26.67%

Since both switching impulse and lightening impulse have protection

margin more than 20% hence selection is OK. So the arrester selected is
ZLA3235.
