Unit Title: Volume

Name: Ivan Cisneros

Content Area: Mathematics-Geometry

Grade Level: 9th

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Geometric Measurement and Dimension: G-GMD

3. Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.
Modeling with Geometry: G-MG
2. Apply concepts of density based on area and volume in modeling situations (e.g., persons per square mile, BTUs per cubic foot).
Big Ideas:

New formulas will be learned regarding the volume of spheres, cylinders, cones, and pyramids. Students will see that area plays an
important role in the volume formulas. As students progress, they will also see how these formulas are applied to real life
situations.
Unit Goals and Objectives:

Activities in this unit will require students to recall previously learned information about area to solve problems of volume.
Students will be able to apply newly learned content to solve word and computational problems. Once students finish the given
activities, they will demonstrate that they know how to apply the new content to real life situations.
Unit Summary:

This unit will teach students formulas to find the volume of 3 dimensional shapes, specifically spheres, cylinders, cones, and
pyramids. It will also help students learn how these new formulas can be applied to real life situations. This unit will begin with a
lesson on volume formulas along with a worksheet that is to be completed in groups of four. Students will also be required to work
on a PowerPoint presentation to explain what they have learned as part of a summative assessment. This presentation will have
them choose an object of which they will find its volume, this will give them the opportunity to get creative with their presentation.
Other assignments will require them to apply the information they have learned while also using software.
Assessment Plan:

Entry-Level:
Students will be given a quick write in
which they will tell me what they already
know about volume.

Formative:
A short non-graded quiz will be given
related to what has been presented in the
lecture.

Summative:
Students will be split into groups of four to
create a PowerPoint presentation which
will be on the same topic and will include
a real world example of volume.

Lesson 1
Acceptable Evidence:
Students will
participate as the
teacher asks
questions regarding
the lecture. A quiz
given after the lecture
will also demonstrate
that they understand
the unit.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Students will listen to the lecture on volume. As they listen
they will also be filling out the provided notes, which will
help them complete homework assignments and study for
the unit exam. Participation will also be required during the
lecture.

Student Learning
Objective:
Students will learn
extra information not
found in the lecture
regarding units of
measurement and
volume, and they will
demonstrate that
they are able to apply
the new information.
Lesson 3

Acceptable Evidence:
Answers to the
assigned questions
are correct, well
structured, and are
demonstrate higher
level thinking.

Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Students will follow the provided links, which will help them
answer the assigned questions. The provided websites will
give them information and some applications of volume.
Questions require computation and higher level thinking.

Student Learning
Objective:
Students will
demonstrate that
they are able to
arrange information
in a logical order.

Presentation
Organization

Lesson Activities:
Students will work in groups of four to complete the
following assignments: read their textbook, take notes, work
on a problem and graphic organizer, and create a visual
representation of their assigned sphere using Geogebra 5.

Student Learning
Objective:
Students will have a
solid background on
what volume is. They
will also learn volume
formulas and how to
apply them to
problems.

Unit Resources:
The course textbook contains lots of useful information and should really be the first place to look for help.
The lecture notes provided in lesson 1 also contain really useful information that can help with the homework, quizzes, and exams.
The class website can help you with any questions you have regarding the class during after school hours.

Useful Websites:
Khan Academy is a great source you can use to find videos on subjects you need help with. This link is specifically for their math page.
Wolf Ram Alpha is a website in which you can plug in your problem and get an answer back. This should be used for problems you are
having difficulty with.
Math Open Reference has information on different areas of math. It has a great interactive window in the section about volume.
