    betterandforworse.Itiseasytoassumethatpowercomesinnumbers.Ifthereisastronggroup
    advocatingacertaincause,itisdifficulttogoagainstitasamereindividual.Conjureupmore
    andmorepeopletosupportyourcauseandyounowhaveequivalentstrength.Thementalityofa
    groupversusoneofanindividualcontrastsheavily,becausewhilemostindividualsaremoral
    andgood,theytendtogiveintothepeerpressure,advantages,andfearthatcaninfluencethem
    toactotherwise.Andsobeginsthedominoeffect,whereallreasonisforgotteninthemidstofa
    aunitedfight.MLKwasoneofthefirsttorecognizethispsychologicalpatternandrelateitto
    thecivilrightsmovementhewasleading.
    Pastgroupsinhistorythathaveprovedthiseffecttobetrue,suchastheNazisin
    Germany,orthecommunistsintheSovietUnion,failedtoyieldanypositivechangewithintheir
    groups.Peoplewereforcedtoconformthemselvestostandardsandideastheydidnotagreewith
    forthesakeofsecurity.Theleadersofthesenegativegroupsplayedthistotheiradvantageby
    threateningpeoplewithpunishment,disadvantages,andeventheshunningofthepeoplearound
    them.Insituationslikethose,peoplefeltthattheycouldnotrespondcourageouslyforfearof
    ruiningtheirlivesintheprocess.WhileMLKsargumentiscompletelytrueandsaddeningto

    evenrecognize,theoverallideaishardtobreakfromwhenthepublicisforcedundersuch
    circumstances.Thisstandstobeoneofthemanycomplexitiesinsuchaboldargument.
    However,itisalsotruethatduringthecivilrightsmovement,whitepeoplewerenot
    oppressedforofferingtheirAfricanAmericanneighborsandfriendsthesameprivileges,they
    weremerelyjudgedbytheotherwhitepeople.Thisalonecounteractsthepreviouscomplexity
    becauseMLKsargumentisputintoaspecificcontext.Whenpeoplearegiventhechoicetobe
    goodandkindwithouthavinganythingimportanttolose,theirheartsaretrulytestedandseen
    forwhattheytrulyare.
    Frompersonalexperience,Icanattesttohavingbeenashamedfornotstandingupfor
    whatisrightwhenmostothersfighttheirfoolishargument.Themoralsofahumanbeing
    developsearlyoninchildhoodwhenaprivilegedchildchoosestoeithersharehisorhertoysor
    selfishlykeepthemtothemselves.Everything,intheend,simplifiesandcomesdowntoacting
    onwhatyourhearttellsyoutodoincontrastwithwhatsociety,oralargergroupexpectsyouto
    do.ThevoluntaryaspectofthisissueiswhatMLKemphasizesinhisquote,fullyrecognizing
    thecourageyoumusttakeoninordertoactright.
    Historyhasawayofforeshadowingfutureissuesyetgivingus,inthepresent,the
    opportunitytolearnfrompastmistakes.Whileethnicprejudicesseemstobelessofanapparent
    issue,itstillaffectstheconsciousofbothsidesoftheissueinknowinghowtotrulyrespecteach
    other.
