Korean government initiates cafeteria quality control
By GRACE YANG
The Korean government decided to process the quality control system for cafeteria foods
in public schools on Jan. 30 in attempt to not only prevent food poisonings among
students, but also to improve on the safety, nutritional value, and cost of the food served.
I personally think lunch must always be nutritious and safe for students who work
strenuously all day long, said Eun-Hyang Kwon, a mother of a public Korean school
student. Its probably the most important meal of the day.
Food poisoning has been fairly prevalent throughout last year, and unfortunately is still
ongoing. 40 students from a public Korean school in Ilsan were found to have food
poisoning after eating lunch on January 6. In order to prevent such cases in the future, the
government has ordered the education department to check on all cafeterias of public
schools in Korea as the new school year is approaching in March.
Food poisonings frequently occur in schools because in often cases, cafeteria foods are
slightly rotten, said Dr. Jiwhan Hwang, a pediatrician in Severance Hospital. Its
imperative that they check that foods arent spoiled to cause 40 stomachaches.
The education office chose to focus especially on the facility of cafeterias along with
cooking utensils and tableware sterilizer. If a school does not meet the set standards in
these areas, the education department will provide administrative guidance.
Jung-Doo Huh, the Superintendent of Education Department, told the Asia News Agency,
We will do our best to improve the quality of food and effectiveness of satisfaction, and
support more with a better substantial policy development.
Although the Korean government is not expanding the extent of this quality control over
international schools, Seoul International School (SIS) is still ready to run the race beside
all other schools. However, there have been many concerns regarding the sanitary
condition of JJ Cafeteria at SIS.
I actually think the taste of the food in our cafeteria isnt that bad but sanitation is, said
April Kim (9), a student at SIS. I understand that its definitely hard to keep things clean
with students rushing in every second, but the trays dont seem to be very hygienic.
Yet JJ Cafeteria is trying its best to promise the safety, good taste, and nutritional value of
lunch food at a certainly limited cost.
Our JJ Cafeteria has a monthly check up on our sanitation, said Sooyeon Kwon, the
Manager of SIS JJ Cafeteria. The official head of this whole company actually leave
insightful comments, marks, and graphs to inform us about the condition, so students here
shouldnt worry about the state of sanitation.
As the cafeteria quality control system is actively taking place throughout the entire
nation, JJ Cafeteria will continue to do its best to avoid any food poisonings in the future.
