Swift starts his satirical essay by describing the current state of Ireland.
Everything seems to be in disarray, as poverty is widespread in this land. It is said that
as soon as a tourist arrives, starving children and begging mothers are asking for alms.
Clearly, Swift is about to suggest a solution to this problematic situation.
The focus now shifts to the kids of Ireland. Swift almost describes the children as
serving no purpose in society. This is where the reader probably realizes the essay is
satirical, as Swift is a proud nationalist. He says that the kids cannot even be sold for
too much money. He also says that they are likely to become beggars and stealers.
This now opens possibilities for what use the children can be put to. At this point,
the reader expects something drastic, as he/she knows this is a work of satire. When
Swift proposes consuming the children, the reader knows that the author is simply using
this as a means of expressing his frustration with the state of poverty his country is in.
Another rhetorical device Swift uses in order to convey his point is paragraph
structure. His proposal goes from largely small paragraphs to mainly long paragraphs

as he transitions from the introduction to the actual proposition. This suggests that as he
was building up his point, he wanted to state multiple points, but his proposal is
relatively unified.
Swift effectively prepares the reader for his proposal by using diction, hyperboles,
and symbols. The use of words like deplorable and grievances creates a somber
mood. He even exaggerates many claims and statements. He seems to be speaking in
this manner to criticize the system and those who are running it.

Peer Reviews
Your paper had an interesting point of view that I enjoyed learning about. You thought
that paragraph structure, hyperboles, diction and symbols were vital to the point of the
paper. You also had high level diction which indicated that you knew what you were
talking about. Problematic and consuming are examples of words you used
effectively. I loved your focus on the multiple parts of the paper! In order to improve, I
might add more examples from the paper next time.

Everyone has room for improvement, and you have a lot. With this paper, I saw your
great potential as a writer, but I didnt see your potential used to the fullest. Your paper
could be improved by the addition of more details and examples from the original essay.
This length would be useful, as it would indicate that you have a myriad of ideas about
the topic and understand rhetoric thoroughly. Adding further supporting details could
also enhance your paper infinitely.
Analysis
My paper had multiple flaws this time, as is to be expected by one written and
planned in a mere 40 minutes. I found that my thesis was hard to locate. Making a clear,
broad thesis is very important to the paper and can help the reader understand what the
paper will entail. My diction and sentence structure were satisfactory. Another flaw in
my paper that could be improved upon is the length. By adding more examples from
Swifts essay, A Modest Proposal, and supporting details from it, I could make the paper
longer and expand upon the authors rhetorical language. My current paragraphs
include the shifts in the content of his paragraphs and the diction and symbols. These
paragraphs are only briefly developed and contain very few examples. It is not enough
to simply say Swift effectively prepares the reader for his proposal by using diction,
hyperboles, and symbols. I must also include direct examples from the essay written by
Swift. My rhetorical analysis could be enhanced on by adhering to these improvements.
