SubjectiveRealism
Subjectiverealismisatheorythatinvolvessubjectiveidealism.Justlikeanythingin
philosophytherearemanydifferentideasinthematter,includingifitistrueornot.Accordingto
GeorgeBerkeley,subjectiveidealismisasubjectstatingthatonlymindsandideasexist
(Hallman260).Thistheoryincludesthatobjects,andbodies,andallthingsthatarephysically
theredonotexist,andarenotreallythere.
IamchoosingtowriteaboutthistopicbecauseitdoesnotmakeanysensetomesoI
wanttolearnmoreaboutit.Inmyopinionthetheoryofsubjectiverealismisatheorythathasno
truthwhatsoever.Itisobviousthatsensepeoplecanseeobjectsandnotgorightthroughthem
thatareinfactreal.Furthermore,beingsarealsothere,theycanmovearoundwithoutgoing
throughanythingoranythinggoingthroughthem,thereforehumansandanimalsarealsoreal,
eventhoughthistheorystatesthattheyarenotexisting.
GeorgeBerkleystatesthatobjectssuchashisdeskexisttohimbutonlyinhismind
becausethedeskistheirwithhissenses,suchassmellandtouch(Hallman261).Hebelieves
thatthingsareonlyperceivedthroughoursenses,andthereforeonlyourideasandsensationsare
whathumansperceive(Hallman261).Iagreethatthingsareperceivedthroughideasandsenses,
howeverIdonotbelievethatthismakesthemnotreal.

Whileatablemightfeeldifferenttomethantosomeoneelse,thattableisstillthesame
tableinbothofoureyes.Itwouldonlyfeeldifferentbecauseofthetextureofhands.Humans
cannotreadminds,soitisnotpossibletosimplypretendtoperceiveatablebecausesomeone
elsedoes.Itisafactthatthetableisthereanditisreal,sothereforemultiplepeoplecanseethe
tableandperceiveitwiththesenses.
Berkleyalsostatesthatbodieshavenosubstancewithoutamind(Hallman261).
Accordingtohimifsomeoneisnotperceivedtheydonotexist.Thispartofthetheorymeans
thatifsomeonesatinamountainfordaysandwasnotseenbyanything,andnooneknewofhis
existence,thenthatpersondoesnotexist.Tome,thisdoesnotmakeanysenseatall.Thatbeing
inamountainstilloccupiesspace,hestillhasanodorevenifitisnotsmelled,hestillhasataste
evenifnoanimaleatshim.Heisstillarealbeing.
Healsowritesthatthereisnoothersubstancethanspirit,orthatwhichitperceives
(Hallman262).Thiswouldmeanthatacouchorachairhasnosubstanceifthereisnotsomeone
theretoperceiveit.Ho
wever,thedefinitionofasubstanceisphysicalmaterialfromwhich
somethingismadeorwhichhasdiscreteexistence(Substance).Achairandacouchbothhavea
physicalexistence,thereforestillhavesubstance.
Berkleyarguesthatbeingabletothinkofobjectsthataretheredoesnotprovethatthey
arereallytherewhennooneistheretoperceivethem(Hallman263).Iagreewiththis,although
Ibelievethereissomethingelsethatproveobjectsaretherewhennooneisthereperceiving
them.
Thisisacamera.Storeshavesurveillancecamerastomakesurenothinggetsstolen,itis
possibletogobackalookatthecamera.Letssaytherewasamomentwhennoonewasina

storebutthecameraswerestillrolling.Later,apoliceofficerlooksatthecamera,noonewas
thereatthetimetoperceivetheobjectshowever,theobjectsarestillthere.Thepoliceofficercan
notmagicallyperceivethesameobjectstherebecausehehasneverbeeninthestorebefore,yet
heseesthesameobjects.Thiscanonlybebecausetheobjectsarerealthingsthatexist,outside
ofonesmind.
BerkelystatesthatWheninbroaddaylightIopenmyeyes,itisnotinmypowerto
choosewhetherIshallseeornot,ortodeterminewhatparticularobjectspresentthemselvesto
myview(Hallman263).Hebelievesitissomebodyelseswilloraspiritthatproducesthe
thingshesees(Hallman263).Hethinksthatsomeonehastowillsomethingtobeseenbyothers.
Idonotagreewiththisportionofhistheoryatall.Itdoesnotmakesensethatsome
spirit,orsomeoneelsewouldwillsomethingtobethereforsomeoneelsetosee.Therewouldbe
nopointinthatandthatpersonwouldgainnothing.Humansareveryselfishbynatureanddo
everythingforgain,evenifitisjusttomakethemselvesfeelgood.Creatingsomethingelse
wouldnotbringanygaintothem,soitwouldbepointlessandsimplywouldnothappen.
Healsostatesthathumansonlyknowthemainfactsoflifebyobservingthesettledlaws
ofnature,andnotbydiscoveringaconnectionbetweenourideas(Hallman264).Idoagreewith
thisstatementbecausewithoutobservingcertainthingswewouldnotknowthem.Anexample
wouldbethateatinghelpsarestomachsfeelbetterwhenwearehungry.Anotherexamplewould
beknowingdrinkingwaterquenchesthirst.Suchknowledgedoesnotjustcometous,butis
learnedbyeitherexperiencingitorwatchingithappen.

HewritesthatGoverningSpiritwhosewillconstitutesthelawsofnature,isfarfrom
leadingourthoughtstohim(Hallman264).Thisstatementhowever,hasnoevidencetosupport
it.Perhapsoneofthereligionsthatexistsisinfactthegoverningspirit.
Itistruethatashumansitisknownthatthehumansarenotresponsibleforeverything
thereis,andpeopletrytofindoutwhatthecauseis.However,Ibelievethatisverylikelynoone
willeverknowtherealcauseforeverything,evenifitisknown,justnotknownasthetruth.
Christianitycouldverywellbethetruth,butsocouldtheWiccanreligion,thereisreallynoway
toknowwhichisandwhichisnot,itissimplywhatpeoplechosetobelieve.
Lastly,Berkleystatesthatitiscertainthatnoidea,whetherfaintorstrong,canexist
otherwisethaninamindperceivingit(Hallman264).Hebelievesthatallobjectsarejustideas
someoneperceivestobetrue.Thisconcludeshisideasabouthistheoryon
subjectiverealism.
Idonotbelievehislaststatementbecauseifsomeonewastowritedownhis/herideaor
simplyspeak,thepersonlisteningwouldthenperceivethatsameideainhis/herhead.Thenwith
multiplepeopleperceivingtheideaitcanbecomereality,andthenthosepeoplecanpassaway
andthatideacanbejustsittingtherewrittendown,oranactualthing.Noonemayeverseethat
again,butitisstillthere,anditisstillarealidea.
Idonotthinkthistheoryispresentindailylife,orevenrelevanttoanything.Thisisjust
atheoryaphilosophermadeup,andsomedeemtobetrue.Thistheoryisnotatrueone,and
doesnoteffectiveanyoneslifeinanyway,expectthosethatacceptitasfact.
Afterstudyingthetheoryofsubjectiverealismmoreandwritingthispapermythoughts
concerningithavebecomeevenstrongerthantheywerebefore.Istillcompletelydisagreewith
thetheoryandthinkitisjustonesomeonedecidedtomakeuponedayandstartedtoacceptitas

thetruth.IwillnotbelookinganyfurtherintothistheoryasIhaveconcludeditisfalseandhas
norealevidencetosupportit.
