Child Obesity in

Germany
BY BENNET, JOHANN & TIMO

Hello and welcome to our iBook made to inform

people about the coming storm,

OBESITY!
We are a group of 11 year old students at an
international school studying Child Obesity in
Germany. Due to the fact that we attend an
international school, our approach to all topics is
more global.
This explains why we divided our project-group.
Hence part of us is concentrating on Child
Obesity in Germany (local connection) while the
other is working on Malnutrition in Africa
(internationl connection).

WhIntroduction

An essential part of Grade 5 in the IB program at BIS

is the PYP (Primary Years Program) Exhibition. It
should show our learning throughout the PYP.
This year the focus is on the MDGs (Millenium
Development Goals) established by the UN in 2000.
The idea for us was to choose among six MDGs.
As most interesting for our group turned out to be
MDG # 4 (Reduce Child Mortality). The term of Child
Mortality refers to Children under 5 dying of bad
medical conditions (Diseases). Partly these can be
traced back to mal- or under-nutrition.
In the course of our studies, it became clear that what
we experience here in Germany is quite the opposite of
the situation in eg. Sub-Saharan Africa, where most
people have hardly anything to eat. Germans can chose
from an enormous range of food which is offered at a
low price level available all around the clock. Against
this background it is no wonder that 1/3 of 11 year olds
is either obese or overweight. Of course no one of
these is likely to die under the age of 5. However, long
term negative consequences like Diabetes type 2 and
High Cholesterol leading to early heart problems cant
be denied.

How we went
to where we
are now...

In the 20th century, the Industrial

Revolution and a gain of technology
led to a growth of productivity. People
worked less hard and had more food
than required to survive. Machines
took over what in former days had
been done by humans.
Most homes in developed countries have 2
cars and a TV nowadays. Modern
conveniences like washing machines and
dryers provide more leisure time than ever
before. Less physical activity combined
with more consumption of food makes
modern civilizations fat.

Before and now

Computers and mobiles had another huge

impact on our culture in terms of living and
communicating. Were literally connected with
the entire world from our sofa. The bad news is
most people are creating a more sedentary
lifestyle with all the negative side effects.
While in former days kids used to play outside
and run all about, lots of our children are glued
to a screen and physically rest while
additionally consuming convenience food.
Todays childrens habits have changed alot.
This is what creates a big problem: CHILD
OBESITY!

Consider a typical fast-food meal of a kid: a double-cheeseburger

with fries and a 28.3495 g soda pop contains 860 calories; already
43% of the daily intake recommendation.

Definition:
Overweight and Obesity
are defined as abnormal or
excessive fat accumulation that
presents a risk to health.

OBESITY
Overweight and Obesity are measured by
the Body Mass Index (BMI):
A persons weight (kg) divided by his
or her height squared (m2).
A person with a BMI of 30 or more is
considered obese, from 25 - 30 is
considered overweight and under 19 is
considered underweight.
Overweight and Obesity are major risk
factors for a number of chronic diseases,
especially Diabetes.

The dramatic rise of Obesity goes along

with a corresponding rise in Diabetes Type
2.
A lack of physical exercise and the
consumption of too much of the
wrong food makes our bodychemistry messed up.
Remember:
1.) no exercise
2.) high amount of food

There are two types of Diabetes:

Diabetes Type 1 people are developing
usually early in their childhood. It has to
be treated with insulin.
Diabetes Type 2 is usually developed in
adult people that used to have bad habits
in their early lives.
What kind of bad habit?
They usually lived a lot from
high glycemic carbohydrated foods.

Elements of Food:
1. Good Fat
(unsuturated)
is used to store
energy and produce
hormones as well as to
digest amino acids
2. Proteins
are the building
blocks of life;
the body transforms
them into muscle,
hormones and other

chemicals used for the

cell to function

3. Carbohydrates
are the fuel for our cells.
Our body breaks them
into glucose that
energizes severe
metabolic functions ,
especially the brain
work, the red blood cells
and the muscles.

Elements

These 3 elements ingested in a proper

balance are essential for a healthy body.

BUT:
The intake of your carbohydrates needs to
be evaluated after how quick the glucose
level will rise after being ingested!

The Glycemic Index is basically a

measure of how much Glucose (A Sugar
Mollecule) is produced in the body in a
short period of time. It allows us to see
how quickly foods turn into Glucose in
our blood after being injested.

Low Glycemic rate: 0-55

Medium Glycemic rate: 56-69
High glycemic rate: 70 or
greater

Here we have provided you with a small

list of main foods with their glycemicindex-rate:
-White wheat bread 75 2
-Spaghetti, white 49 2
-Apple, raw 36 2
-Banana, raw 51 3
-Mango, raw 51 5

Insulin is a hormone created

by the betacells in the
pancreas. It is the one that
carries the Glucose (Sugar
molecule) to the cells, opens
the cells doors and finally
lets the Glucose inside. *This
diagram shows a good
Insulin level where there is
not too much Insulin. The Glucose goes into
the cells without a problem:

Glucose on the other hand is

a sugar molecule stored in
the liver. It gives us energy,
which gets produced in the
cells. *This graph shows a
healthy, low glycemic meal:

The R
& Glucose

Now, the problem starts when you eat too much

Glucose. The body has to produce a lot of Insulin, to
keep up with the high Glucose level. *This graph
shows that there is a lot of Glucose, and the Insulin
level keeps up with it. The problem is that in the gap,
where glucose goes down,
Insulin takes more time to
decrease. This can cause
shakes, headache and
worst of all, extreme
hunger which makes you
eat more Glucose:

If more Glucose is eaten, the body has to produce even

more Insulin to keep up with it. Finally, the betacells
(Producers of Insulin) are so tired, that they quit! In
your later life, you will eventually develop Diabetes
type 2.
*This Diagram shows that there is so much
Insulin, that the
betacells quit, and the
cells cant receive any
Glucose:

Marketing has a decisive effect on child

obesity. There are All You Can Eat
campaigns typical of many restaurants. The
clients pay a fixed sum and are allowed to eat
as much as they are able to, trying to make
the most out of the invested money.
Similar to this is Buy one, get two. This is
how supermarkets attract customers who
enjoy getting large quantities for little money.
Another example is many food companies
strategy to increase the package size so that
the customer ends up with more content than
needed.
All this leads to Child Obesity because above
all children are seduced to consume more
than they had intended.

Certain strategies cause

Overweight kids are more likely to suffer

from depression and low self-esteem.
Who we are is a lot based on how others
interact with us. Often starting with
playground teasing and name-calling,
they develop a lower self-confidence, a
deep frustration and anxiety leading to a
reduced motivation to participate in
games and sports, ending up in an even
stronger vicious circle of loneliness with
eating as a substitute of physical activity,
gaining even more weight.

Now its time for you to change.

You can...If not you, then who?...If not
now then when?....CHANGE!
Action should start with you! This is
what counts. You can...CHANGE!
Action can be as easy as changing your
mind. Before changing anyone, you have
to change yourself...Then its time to
spread the word!
Dont feel offended. This is not to
intervene when it comes to what people
look like. Of course, each one of us is
different, and this is what makes us so
special and interesting. However, as soon
as ones health is at risk, ACTION should
be taken!

Your
Change...

Thank You to...

A BIG thankyou goes to Henry Patino and Frank Patino M.D!

Firstly, their book: The Age Of Globesity ; Entering the perfect
storm, was a big help to this one, because it changed our way
of thinking and was the main source to this iBook. We hope this
book will change your thinking too...
Secondly, Henry Patino was a great coordinator to this project
and answered our questions specificly and accurate. He
definetly

changed our normal way of thinking and

understanding this problem to a much more scientifical view.
