Artifact Reflection: Standard I

Content and Curriculum

Title:

Evidence of Content Knowledge and Curriculum in the Social Studies Subjects

Date:

May 2015

Description:
The following artifacts represented with this artifact reflection are a final evaluation from my
high school student teaching placement, my Praxis 2 score, and transcripts which highlight my
final grades in the social studies classes that I took at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville.
Throughout the course of my placement at Lancaster High School, Mr. Bridge and I reflected
daily upon the lessons that I taught to both the freshmen and junior/senior history and global
issues classes. In addition to the progress I made throughout my time student teaching at the high
school level, this final evaluation highlights the rapport I built with my students as well as the
faculty at Lancaster High School. Mr. Bridge also reflects upon how I grew in my content
knowledge and delivery of my lessons during the first 9 weeks of my student teaching
placement. The Praxis 2 scores that are provided with this standard highlight the Praxis exam all
social studies teacher candidates must take for the state of Wisconsin to be eligible to student
teach and apply for a teaching license. Finally, I have provided transcripts which highlight the
social studies classes that I took and the grade I received in each class at the University of
Wisconsin-Platteville.

Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
My Evidence of Content Knowledge and Curriculum in the Social Studies Subjects artifacts best
aligns with Standard 1: Content and Curriculum. The teacher understands the central concepts,
tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline he or she teaches and can create learning
experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.
These artifacts best align with Standard 1 because they shows that I am distinguished in each of
the knowledge, skill, and disposition statements that are required of me. The four domains are:
planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities.
I understand the main concepts within the Social Studies curriculum, and deliver them in a way
that is understandable for students. I plan thorough lessons that accommodate the needs of the

students, and manage the students in a way that isn't disruptive to the overall lesson, but keeps
them focused and on task. I also fulfill my professional obligations to the district, other faculty
members, and my overall profession. In his comments, Mr. Bridge states that I know how to
deliver lessons that are appropriate and effective for students. He also states that I am flexible
and respond to student needs as questions arise in order to make my lessons meaningful for
students. My passing Praxis 2 score and my highlighted grades for social studies classes also
provide evidence that I know my content very well. The grades and score on my Praxis 2 test
show that I have a wealthy amount of knowledge in each social studies subject that I am eligible
to teach.

UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Alignment

The final evaluation of my High School Student Teaching placement best aligns with KSD I. A:
Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy The candidate displays extensive content
knowledge of his/her subject areas and demonstrates a continuing search for new content
knowledge, resources, and best instructional practices, while understanding student diversity
and student misconceptions and misunderstandings as key to the teaching process.
My High School Student Teaching final evaluation, transcripts, and passing Praxis 2
score best aligns with this KSD because I grew much stronger in my content knowledge,
teaching style, and classroom management style as a result of each of these experiences. These
artifacts display that I became more knowledgeable in my content area in addition to looking for
new ways to improve my approaches to teaching my content. I was also able to adapt my
teaching techniques to students of all abilities during this time.
I am more competent after this experience because I was able to expand my wealth of
content knowledge and methods of delivery to students. In addition, by taking numerous social
science classes at UW-Platteville, I did not just limit myself to one subject area. By taking these
extra social studies classes and excelling in them, I am more knowledgeable for my future
students benefit as well as my own.
Secondary Alignment:
KSD I B: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students
KSD I E: Designing Coherent Instruction
KSD IV F: Showing Professionalism

Reflection:

What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience

From this experience, I learned that knowing your students and knowing your content are very
closely aligned. I can know my content very well, but, I also need to be able to know my students
just as well to be effective in teaching my subject matter. From day one of student teaching, my
focus was set on getting to know the names and faces of the students I would have for the next 9
weeks. I believe that this effort made a major impact on the responses that I got from both my
freshmen, junior, and senior students. In return, I was able to grow in my content knowledge and
lesson development as a result of this experience. Also, I can look back on the several core social
studies classes that I have taken at UW-Platteville and see that I have increased my knowledge in
not only history, I also increased my knowledge in political science, anthropology, sociology,
psychology, economics, and government. All of these subjects are intertwined and beneficial
when it comes to me being the best teacher that I can be no matter the social studies subject.

What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience

Each year of teaching experience that I have will come with more strength in my content area
and my delivery methods. This experience was only the beginning of what I believe to be a great
teaching career ahead of me! I feel that I learned more about my content, my delivery, and my
students than I ever could have anticipated. I learned just how important it is to get to know my
students so that I can be succesfull in delivering my content. I learned how to utilize all resources
around me and to ask experienced teachers for advice and suggestions. I believe that this
experience has prepared me for my own classroom and the ways in which I want to manage my
classes, built rapport with students, faculty, and families, and how to successfully deliver my
subject matter.
