Comments:
When I first started the process of identifying and matching artifacts with the SDA programs
learning outcomes, I was impressed with how much of my experience in the program covered
multiple at one time. This did not make it easy to narrow down my artifacts. Once I structured an
outline around two themes identity development and transition I found my creative edge to
highlight my professional scholarship and reflect on room for growth.
Throughout the process and reflection of my portfolio development and presentation, SDA
learning outcome #10 stood out and supported my themes. I believe this was an important outcome
for me because each of the experiences I expressed in my portfolio challenged my process
throughout the program but also supported my desire to become a practitioner-scholar. I believe this
outcome affirmed my passion for higher education and enhanced my values and appreciation for
student and academic affairs through practice, theory, and application.
Naturally, learning will never be complete! I recognize there were two learning outcomes I did
not express as deeply as others in my portfolio or presentation. Reflecting on this, I hope to continue
growing in learning outcomes #1 and #9 in my next career; expanding my knowledge of the emerging
nature of student affairs profession in higher education as well as understanding issues surrounding
law, policy, finance, and governance. While these were certainly touched on in many aspects of my
SDA career in and out of the classroom, I also see a great opportunity for continued professional
development in the next community I join.
In closing, I could not have asked for a more supportive committee to share my portfolio
experience with. Simply put, I had fun and I think they did too! I thrive when I get into presentation
mode and SDA has also taught me to appreciate feedback. For example, I valued the time with my
committee to debrief the process as a whole and gain input on ways to balance my responses with
matching artifacts as well as learning outcomes. They also mentioned that in writing, I articulated
each SDA learning outcome in a meaningful and professional manner. This whole process was also
very timely and truly prepared me to articulate my educational experience and career development in
future interviews.
Thank you again for the opportunity to learn and grow in my professional and personal
identities as an adult learner, feminist, and practitioner-scholar. Cheers!
