TITLE OF LESSON: Cool Colored Sculpture


GRADE LEVEL: First and Second Grade
NUMBER OF CLASSES NEEDED: Two Classes of 45 minute periods, One
Class Period using only 15 minutes.

LESSON OVERVIEW:
As part of a Color Unit, Students will begin the unit with a cool color paper
sculpture. Students will be given open guidelines to completing this project. Between the
creation of the paper and construction of the sculptures, students will experiment with
mixed media throughout the process. The project is open-ended so that each student
engages in creative and critical thinking in interpreting the assignment. The final projects
will be exhibited and the parents will be sent information about where the exhibit will be
located and what the project consists of for an culminating event.

1. Sculptures are more than stone and bronze in medium.

ADDRESS?
1.3 Learn and use appropriate vocabulary related to methods, materials, and
techniques.

SECTION FIVE:
THE STEPS TO TEACHING THIS LESSON:
Day One:
Students will enter room and sit down, Instructor will begin a discussion about
what students know about cool colors. Instructor will have several examples of objects in

everyday life that are cool colors. Instructor will have all students in cool colors stand up,
assessing the knowledge base of students.
Instructor will explain lesson for the day, that the students will be given one piece
of paper and they will be expected to cover the entire sheet with cool colored watercolors.
Instructor will pass out supplies and smocks to material managers.
(Fifteen Minutes)
Students will work for the remainder of the class period on covering the surface of
their paper.
(Twenty Five Minutes)
Students will have five minutes for clean up and putting away materials.
(Five Minutes)
Day Two:
Students will enter room and sit down, Instructor will review concepts from
previous class (cool colors and what they are).
Instructor will explain to class the lesson objectives for the day are to cut up their
painted piece of paper to create an abstract paper sculpture.
Instructor will ask students how they could create a three-dimensional shape out
of a flat piece of paper.
Instructor will demonstrate how to create several forms out of paper, mounting
each piece of blue card stock.
Instructor will emphasize to students to try to create structures that are tall and
three-dimensional.

Students will work for the remainder of the class period on covering the surface of
their paper.

Day Three:
Students will use fifteen minutes of their next class period to participate in a class
discussion and complete a reflection worksheet.

INTRODUCTIONInstructor will begin a discussion about what students know about cool colors. Instructor
will have several examples of objects in everyday life that are cool colors. Instructor will
have all students in cool colors stand up, assessing the knowledge base of students.
Instructor will have students demonstrate their understanding by asking them to give a
thumbs up for understanding, a middle thumb for some understanding and thumbs down
for no understanding.
DEMONSTRATION-

Instructor will demonstrate how to use


watercolor and brushes appropriately,
explaining that if a paper is saturated too
much with water it begins to break down.

forms with the treated paper.
