A well planned lesson, clear objectives laid out at the

Clarity of

Work

Period: 3

I would like to see the use of clearer teaching point and

showing more technical knowledge, you showed that
you understood how and why parts of the body
movement linked to a good throw and you developed
questions for the girls around that. However, there was
a little bit lacking in terms of teaching points for
technique.
For the subject being taught (Shot Putt) this was ok, its
difficult to teach this differently because of the safety
aspects that you have to include (which are more
important than a lesson with lots of activities)
Perhaps ways of streamlining the lesson so the girls
get more throws with the shot putt itself could be
developed.
This class seemed to love applying the information you
were giving to why it made a good throw, develop your
questioning technique to push for further information as
the lesson develops rather than just repeating the
same questions and getting the same answers. Start
asking Why? and How? to the girls and see if you
can get more of an understanding and links to other
aspects from them.
Some girls could have moved onto a more technical
throw, make sure you are confident at this as this will
encourage you to teach it, get out and practice a few
times so you know how to teach it.
As discussed above, you had a great way of managing
the questioning sessions within the lesson, now start to
develop questions that require application of
knowledge rather than simply repeating something
they have heard during the lesson. Ask how/why to the
girls, or ask give them the question at the start of an
activity and say by the end you want at least one
answer from each group. This is a good way to
encourage them to work it out for themselves too and
to build confidence to move from knowledge to
understanding.
NA

All very clear, its obvious you know what you want the
girls to get out of the lesson. However, dont be afraid

Time allocation

Classroom
management

to push the students a little, the lesson felt quite safe

identify the students who require more of a challenge
and give them the next step, you had it in your
planning now start to build the confidence to have
different groups working on different techniques.
Well timed lesson, well paced with the breaks in
practice at relevant time and moving onto the next
activity at appropriate times too
Not really challenged but it is clear you have a good
rapport with these girls and as a result the classroom is
a positive learning environment.

Ending of lesson

Very good for the situation, you stood yourself in a

place where you could be in control of the situation of
throwing which is important in this activity. Also when
giving instruction you were aware to be stood in front of
students and with them having their back to the sun,
taking away distractions for them.
You moved around the smaller groups well and gave
tips, now start to identify the stronger students in the
group and give them the next activity or step.
Nice and clear and your tone was very positive and
welcoming to the students, you wanted them to be
engaged and enthused and you could tell this from
your tone and manner.
Very good, its clear you enjoy teaching this class and
that comes across in the manner in which you speak to
them and encourage them to engage.
You had a plenary during the lesson which was great to
check for understanding of the students and then you
recapped the aims of the lesson at the end, try to
extend the development of understanding through your
questions at the end. Use the fortnightly focus this
time to try out some ideas.

Classroom manner
Very positive, you clearly organised and well prepped for the lesson and the girls responded
really well to your teaching. You managed to bring in some humour into your lesson too.

Areas of strength
Planning of the lesson. Timing, rapport with students. Clear instructions for the activity.
You have a very good manner with the students and are clearly a strong teacher.
See notes above for other areas.

Areas for development

See notes on areas above.
Main areas from observation:
Development of questioning for understanding and application.
Using teaching points more clearly for technique
Move students on at different times to develop the strengths of students.
Achievement of aims
Your learning objectives were clear to the students and linked to the activities well. You used and
developed literacy well through class discussion and activities that you had for the students. Aim
to use VERY specific language of athletics or the unit you are teaching at the time
