1. What role did the military play in shaping the economy of Brazil?
During times of powerful militaries, the colonial rule in Brazil had many problems.
For years military dictators ruled Brazil which led to large economic boosts. There was also
a downside to this happening, the standard of living decreased.
2. What were some of the positive benefits of one-party rule in Mexico?
Standard of living was trying to get increased for peasants and workers. Land reform
and labor rights were promoted and the oil industry was getting nationalized.
3. What effect did the Falklands war have on the military government in Argentina?
The military government in Argentina had to regroup since they lost to Britain in the
war over the Falkland Islands. The generals had to step down and new officials were elected
after this failure of their military.

Uruguay, Chile and Argentina

Bolivia, Ecuador and Columbia.
5. After reading this excerpt, in your opinion, has the military dictatorships in L.A. nations
been bad or
good for the nations' growth? Explain your answer in two paragraphs [minimum].
I think that military dictatorships in Latin America have both a positive and negative
affect to them. At first they all start out well but after a longer amount of time they start to
fall apart and go down in flames.
While reading, define/explain each term or name below and write a sentence regarding its
significance to the topic:
a. Brazilia: A new capital city built by Kubitschek in the middle of Brazil. It was a very
expensive job to do as the nations foreign debt soared and inflation shot up.
b. Land reform: The break up of large estates and distributing land to peasants.
c. Standard of living: Level of material comfort, this is judged the amount of goods
people own.
d. Recession: A slowdown in the economy.
e. PRI: The Institutional Revolution Party. They became the main force for political
stability in Mexico.
f. NAFTA: North American Free Trade Agreement. Removed trade barriers between
Mexico, the United States and Canada.
g. Nationalization of an industry: Industries were becoming larger and larger which
helped nations economies grew. Oil companies were a huge part of the nationalization of
industries.
h. Welfare state: When a government undertakes to protect the health and well-being
of its citizens, especially ones who need financial or social need.
