of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet

Apothecary
In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo found out Juliet was dead. He then went
to the Apothecary to get poison. After getting the poison, he went back to Verona and
killed himself.

Balcony
During the balcony scene, Juliet professes her feelings towards Romeo without
knowing hes listening. He comes out of hiding and tells Juliet how he feels about her.
They talk about getting married, and Romeo says he will send her the plans the next
day.

Character Foil
William Shakespeare uses character foil in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
Character foil is the contrast of characters (opposites). For example, Benvolio and
Tybalt are character foils because Benvolio is peaceful, but Tybalt enjoys causing
problems.

Disown
Juliets parents tell her that she has to marry Paris. Whenever she refuses to, her father
threatens to disown her.

Enemies
The Capulets and Montagues were enemies. They all hated each other and always
looked for reasons to argue, except for Romeo and Juliet of course.

Feud
The Capulets and Montagues have had an ongoing feud, but the readers never find out
what the cause of that feud was.

Guest List
Lord Capulet sent an illiterate server out with the guest list. The server found Romeo
and asked him to read the list to him. After reading it, he invited Romeo Montague to
the Capulets party.

Hatred
There was much hatred going on between both of the families. This hatred caused
many deaths, and it caused the star-crossed lovers to be unhappy.

Iambic Pentameter
Shakespeare uses Iambic Pentameter in the play he wrote. The Iambic Pentameter
consists of ten syllables. The U stands for unstressed and the / stands for stressed.

Juliet
Juliet was a Capulet. She fell in love with Romeo at her parents party, and killed
herself once she saw Romeo dead.

Kiss
The star-crossed lovers first kissed whenever they met each other at Lord Capulets
party. They didnt know they were enemies.

Losses
The love of Romeo and Juliet caused many losses of life. Six people ended up losing
their lives in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.

Mantua
Whenever Romeo killed Tybalt, the prince banished Romeo from Verona. He had to
leave to Mantua.

Nurse
The Nurse helped Romeo and Juliet get married. She went to go get the wedding plans
and took them back to Juliet. She took care of her more than her own mother did.

Opportunity
Juliet had the opportunity to avoid getting married with Paris by drinking the potion
that the friar gave her.

Paradoxes
Shakespeare used many paradoxes in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Paradoxes are
things that have opposite qualities.
Example: illiterate vs. literate

Queen Mab Speech


Mercutio gave the famous Queen Mab Speech whenever him and Romeo were
talking about love and dreams.

Rhyme Scheme
There are many rhyme schemes in the dialogue of the play. His sonnets have the
rhyme scheme of: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.

Star-crossed lovers
Romeo and Juliet are considered star-crossed lovers. They are called that because they
arent able to be together because of their families, and they both end up losing their
lives.

Tragedy
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is considered a tragedy because both Romeo and
Juliet die. They cause their own downfall.

United
At the end, whenever all of the deaths occurred, the Capulets and Montagues became
united. It took them six deaths to do so, but they all came together.

Verona
The play by Shakespeare took in Verona, Italy.

Weddings
Juliet first married Romeo, and then was forced by her dad to marry Count Paris. The
wedding with Paris did not work out as her father expected because she died.

X for exit
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a play, so stage directions are needed. One of the
many stage directions is to exit.

Young
Both Romeo and Juliet were young. Juliet was thirteen and Romeo was seventeen.
They got married at this age.

Zeal
Zeal is great enthusiasm in pursuit of an object. Romeo and Juliet had great passion
and devotion whenever it came to each other.
