A New Fathers Day Tradition
Who cares about Fathers Day? Really? Why do Americans spend 40% more on Mothers Day
than on Fathers day? Is it because fathers are harder to shop for? Or is it because some fathers
are absent, emotionally unavailable, obsessed with career, and too hard to talk to?
Its time for a new tradition. Instead of a hallmark card or a game on TV, what would happen if
fathers and sons put time aside Fathers Day to tell each other the important stories of their lives?
In their new book Prodigal Father Wayward Son, Sam Keen (bestselling author of Fire in the
Belly) and his son Gifford Keen, suggest that telling each other stories might be the most
important thing a father and son can do with each other. By sharing their stories of pain and
vulnerability, childhood injury and adult triumph, and finally of forgiveness, Sam and Gifford
show a simple if thorny path towards reconciliation of long standing, and otherwise intractable
differences.
In a recent interview Sam Keen said, The problem Gifford and I had was that we kept telling the
same stories over and over, and in all of them, I was the tyrant and he the victim. So we needed to
find new stories. Gif asked what stories he needed to know about me to understand how I became
the man I am today. My father carried many of his stories to the grave and I didnt want that to
happen with us.
So this Fathers Day, instead of succumbing to the indignity of a meaningless gift Sam and
Gifford suggest you talk to your father or your son instead. Tell a story, listen to one. Who knows
what might happen.
Sam Keen is the author of a bakers dozen other books. When not writing or traveling around the
world, he lectures and leads seminars on a wide range of topics. He lives on his farm in the hills
above Sonoma, CA.
Gifford Keen has had careers as a software executive, a carpenter, and a real estate investor. He is
the father of a teenage son and daughter and lives with his wife in Santa Fe, NM, where he writes,
meditates, practices yoga, and takes long walks in the high-country.
