Brisk Recovery!
Burleigh Manor Animal Sanctuary and Eco-Retreat is well known
for giving abused, unwanted and neglected animals a second
chance at life. Every animal has a unique story of its arrival, but one
in particular tugs at the heartstrings of BMASER. After harness racing
for three years, Brisk lived as a draft animal for a farming community
for 15 years. When he developed severe back deformities, as well as
arthritis of his back and legs, the community deemed him unable to
work and dumped him at a kill pen, as they do with all animals that
are worked beyond their limits.
Brisk lucked out. Horse slaughter is illegal, yet $64 million was
made in 1996 when 38 million pounds of horse, donkey and mule
meat was exported, according to the United States Department of
Agriculture. Not all horses are saved, but Burleigh Manor has taken
strides to make an impact on this illegal and ethically wrong industry.
As Burleigh Manors biggest and canniest equine, Brisk is a
20-year-old Standardbred that astonishes visitors with his ability to
unlock stall doors from the inside and wander into the pasture. Dr.

Be A Part Of The
91 Percent!
Providing quality care and
rehabilitation is not a cheap task, so
Burleigh Manor depends heavily on
donations. Approximately 91 percent
of revenue is generated from corporate
and individual donations that are put
toward feed and veterinary care, which
made up half of BMASERs expenditures
in 2014. Be a part of that 91 percent and
make a donation today!
