The textbooks are available at the University Bookstore in the Student Center. No
photocopied books may be used. It is unlawful to photocopy a book without the publisher's
explicit permission. Any student who uses a photocopied book will not be allowed to
continue attending class until a new textbook is purchased. Write your name on the
spine of your books the first day of class.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Regular class attendance is expected. If you must miss a class,
please call or
e-mail the instructor beforehand.
Absences are not to exceed 10 class periods. Late arrivals will be counted toward the total
allowable number of absences. If you do not bring your book to class for two days in a row,
you will be marked absent and you will not be allowed to return to class until you meet with
Nancy Price. An excessive number of late arrivals can be a basis for dismissal from the IEP
program.
GRADING:
met:

To receive a passing grade, all of the following requirements must be

-

active participation in class activities

regular attendance, with absences not exceeding 6 class meetings
satisfactory completion of 90% of required assignments
a minimum average course grade of 70%

The course grade will be calculated in the following manner:

-Exams and Speeches 30%
-Quizzes 10%
-Midterm Exam 30%
-Final Exam 30%

PARTICIPATION:
You must follow the directions the instructor gives you, and be respectful to the instructor
and other students in the class. Raise your hand before speaking, do not interrupt, and
interact with other students in a friendly and peaceful manner. Do not take your cell phone
out. Sit in your assigned seat. Check your MU email daily. Students who are rude to the
instructor or other students will meet with Nancy Price; students may also be asked to leave
the room.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:
Homework assignments are due at the beginning of the next class period, unless your
instructor tells you otherwise. If you do not turn in a homework assignment, you will receive
a 0 for that assignment. If the homework is in the book, you may not turn it in late, since
answers are discussed in class the next day. You may turn in written and online assignments
late. If you turn in a written or online homework assignment late, you will receive 50%
credit. If you do not follow directions on a homework assignment, or if the majority of the
answers are incorrect, you will receive 50% credit for the assignment. Assignments that are
done incorrectly but turned in on time may be redone for full credit. You are expected to
turn in all homework assignments. If you turn in less than 90% of the homework
assignments, you will meet with Nancy Price about the importance of homework completion
until you begin to turn in homework on a regular basis. Not completing homework can be a
basis for dismissal from the IEP program.
ONLINE ACCESSIBILITY:
Online homework is a large portion of your homework grade; you must have Internet access
on a weekly basis in order to complete these assignments and get a good grade in the class.
Not having Internet access is not an excuse for not turning in online homework. You can
register for Q Online Practice at http://www.qonlinepractice.com. Use the access code in the
back of your book. You will receive the class code in class.
Canvas is an online tool that helps you keep track of your grades, view additional resources,
view homework assignments, and communicate with your instructor. Your instructor will
send you an invitation to Canvas through your MU email during the first week. Participation
in Canvas is mandatory because your instructor will use it to communicate with you about
the class. Also, occasional extra homework points will be available for those who check
Canvas regularly.
LENOIR
Students in this class must participate in the Lenoir program in order to earn full homework
credit. Each student must visit Lenoir 3 times to earn a total of 6 homework credits. Lenoir
visits are on every other Tuesday.
SPEECHES:
You will be required to give 2 speeches this semester. You will meet with your instructor
before giving the speech to practice and receive feedback on how to improve. The speeches
will be recorded on a camera to assist with accurate grading; you may have a copy of the
recording if you wish.
ACADEMIC HONESTY:

"Academic honesty is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All

members of the academic community must be confident that each person's work has been
responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an
advantage not given to all students is dishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The
academic community regards academic dishonesty as an extremely serious matter, with
serious consequences that range from probation to expulsion. When in doubt about
plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, or collaboration, consult the course instructor." (memo of
8/17/95 from Assistant Provost Jo Behymer)
SPECIAL NEEDS:
If you have any special conditions as addressed by the Americans with Disabilities Act
which require special assistance or accommodations, please let me know immediately.
Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate special needs. You should also notify the
Office of Disability Services, A038 Brady Commons, 882-4696.
RECORDING OF LECTURES
According to university policy, the recording of classes is not permitted. The video
recordings of the presentations done by the instructor will be distributed only to the student
whose presentation has been recorded.
