The Vijayanagara Empire was located on the banks of the Krishna River in South India between the 14th to 16th centuries, also known as Hampi after the goddess Padmavati. It was brought to light by Colonel Colin Mackenzie, the first Surveyor General of India, in 1800. Founded in 1336 by brothers Harihara and Bukka, the Vijayanagara Empire included peoples of different languages and religions within its borders and grew powerful by defeating states such as the Cholas and Hoysalas.
