The LLUK professional standards

for teachers states that all

teachers should:
‘Apply principles to evaluate and
develop own practice in promoting
equality and inclusive learning
and engaging with diversity’
What steps have you taken
recently to meet this
standard?
Aim: To consider key concepts of inclusive
practice within teaching and learning.
 Objectives:
 To define key concepts relating to inclusive
practice.
 To discuss the legislative framework for
inclusive practice.
 To explain the role of inclusive practice with
reference to the LLUK standards.
Key Concepts - Equality
 Equality or Equal opportunities
 Refers to the whole organisation in which you
work, its general ethos and its attitudes towards
providing equal opportunities for learners and
staff.
 Equality for all has to embedded in every aspect
of the institution’s activities – which means that
in any teaching and learning situation teachers
must address the needs of ALL learners.
Key concepts - Diversity
 Refers to the whole range of different individuals
and groups in your community who are your
potential learners. There are 6 recognised
strands of diversity:
 Gender
 Disability
 Ethnicity
 Age
 Sexual orientation
 Religion and /or belief.
Key concepts – Widening
Participation
 This describes the positive attempts made
by learning organisations to bring people
from across the diversity of the community
into learning, particularly those who have
experienced difficulty, disadvantage,
discrimination and disappointment in their
earlier learning.
Key concepts – Inclusive learning
 Inclusive learning is learning which meets
the needs, learning styles, abilities and
experiences of all who come into our
institutions. We can’t just say ‘This is how
we teach’ and expect everyone to fit in
with it. We need to find out how people
learn and to develop provision, methods
and resources to suit them.
Concepts – They go together!
