Acidrainoccurswhenrainfallsthroughairthatispollutedbytheburningoffossilfuels.FossilFuelsinclude
coal,oil,andnaturalgas.Acidraindamagesforests,lakes,farmlandandancientstructuresinEurope.
Marblebuildingsandstatues,forexample,arebecomingdiscoloredandcorroded.Acidrainalsodamages
theforestsacrossEurope,suchastheBlackForestinGermany.

AfricaandheatwavesandrecordcoldandsnowfallsinEuropeandRussia.Notonlydotheseeventskill
people,buttheydestroytheirabilitytosupplytheirbasicneeds.

Manycountriesaroundtheworldhavesetlimitationsontypesofemissionsthatare
thoughttocontributetoclimatechange,butunfortunatelythosethatemitthemost,theUnitedStatesand
China,didnotkeeptolimits.

Deforestation
Europeusedtobecoveredinforests.Today,manyoftheseforestsarebeingcutdown.Thelandisthen
usedforfarmlandanddevelopment.Treesarenotbeingreplacedastheyarecutdown.Thismakesthe
forestsdecreasequicklyinsize.Oneofthelargestareasofdestructionarethetropicalrainforests.These
forestarecutdownforthehardwoodlumber,toclearspaceforfarming,forbuildingsettlements,andfor
grazinganimals.Manymedicinesavailabletodayderivefromplantsintherainforests.Whentheforestsare
gone,sowillthesemedicinesbegone.Theeffectsofdeforestationincludechangesinlocalweather
patterns,abuildingofcarbondioxideintheatmosphere(whichmayleadtothe
greenhouseeffect
,soil
erosion,andextinctionofcertainplantsandanimals.)

Mostgreatforestsarelocatedindevelopingnations.Thesedevelopingnationswould

Desertification
Desertificationisthechangeoverfromarableland(landthatcanbefarmed)intodesert(landthatcannotbe
farmed).Desertificationiscausedmostlybyhumanactivity,especiallyovergrazing,whensheepand
livestockeatfromoneareafortoolongandcuttingdownforests,whichrobsthelandofanotherbarrierto
soilerosion.Asgrassandtreesareeliminated,thesoillosesitsnutrients.Withoutplantrootstoholdthe
soil,winderosionremovesthefertiletopsoil.Thelandisthenunabletosustainplantlife.TheSaharais
Africa,forexample,isexpandingattherateofabout50milesperyear.Theexpansionofdesertsisone
causeoffamine.

NuclearProliferation
In1986,thenuclearpowerplantatChernobyl,Ukrainehadanuclearmeltdown.Itwastheworstaccident
everatanuclearpowerplant.Manypeopleinthesurroundingareawereexposedtoradiation.Some
developedcancer,andothersdied.Beforetheaccident,therewere14,000residentsinChernobyl.Afterthe
accident,everyonewithin30kilometersoftheplantwasevacuated.

Chemicalpollution
Modernfarmingtechniquesoftenrequiresprayingthelandwithfertilizer.Therunoffmixeswithwaterin
lakesandrivers.Thismixcauseswaterpollution.Thesechemicalsalsoaffectthesoilandtheair.
