Students will be able to compare and contrast different viewpoints of civil war soldiers during this
time.
Students will be able to analyze song lyrics and decipher their meaning.

COMMON CORE:
6.1.12.A.4.a Analyze the ways in which prevailing attitudes, socioeconomic factors, and
government actions in the North and South (i.e., Secession) led to the Civil War.
6.1.12.B.4.a Use maps and primary sources to assess the impact that geography, improved
military strategies, political and military decisions (e.g., leadership), and new
modes of transportation had on the outcome of the Civil War.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING:
I will collect and grade their graphic organizer as well as informally assess the students based on
their class participation.

Detailed Description of Learning Experience


INTRODUCTION/HOOK:
Analysis of Robert E. Lee quote.
What role does music play in history?
How can music affect how we live, work, and view the world?
SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITIES/QUESTIONS/ANTICIPATED ANSWERS:
-Analysis of Lee quote (5 minutes)
-What Civil War songs do you know? Any?
-What role does music play in history?
-How can music affect how we live, work, and view the world?
-What role did music play during this time period?
-Analysis of songs, lyrics, etc while students fill out a graphic organizer (40 minutes)
-Who was John Brown? What were his beliefs about slavery? Why does this make a
good rallying song? Why would this song offend the south?
-What is this song about? Which side sang this song? Why did the family in this song
leave the chair at the table? How would this song help people deal with sorrow and
grief?
-Where was Dixie? Why did the South have so much pride? Did they have more pride
than the North? Why was the South confident about winning the war?
-Why would this song enrage the south? Who was Sherman? What does jubilee mean?
-Why would this song be called a hymn? Does John Browns Body sound like a hymn?
What do the religious undertones of this song suggest about the North? (Whos side
was god on?)
ADAPTATIONS/MODIFICATIONS/DIFFERENTIATION: I have differentiated instruction by giving the
students the option to do the work on their laptops or on a hard copy. We will go over the music
together as a class then I will give the students individual time to analyze the music on their own. This
allows students who work at different paces the ability to work at pace that feels comfortable to them.
