Thru-Tubing Inflatable
Retrievable Packers

Thru-Tubing Retrievable Packer, Size 1.69"

Product Family No. H33001
Description and Application
The 1.69 OD Thru-Tubing Packer is an inflatable packer that can be run either on coiled tubing
or threaded tubing. It is a retrievable packer used
for treating, testing, production, injection or numerous other zone isolation applications. This Packer
is designed to run through 2-3/8" tubing and set in
tubing or casing from 2-3/8" to 5-1/2" sizes.
This Packer features a pull equalization function generally used just prior to deflation. When it
is desired to equalize across the packer, tension is
applied to the tubing to shear screws to open ports
above the Packer. This tension load is not transferred through the release screws of the deflation
mechanism and cannot prematurely deflate the
packer. After equalization has occurred, weight is
applied to the packer and then tension re-applied
to the packer to shear the screws in the release
sleeve in order to deflate and retrieve the packer in
the usual way.
The equalizing mechanism can be used to either equalize pressure across the tool or to spot
fluid in the tubing. Spotting fluid to the tool allows
getting more treatment fluid to a tight formation. If
fluid is spotted the valve can not be reopened to
equalize. If the Equalizing Valve is used to equalize pressure across the packer the Upper Seal can
be an O-ring. If the Equalizing Valve is being used
to spot fluid the upper seal must be a Peek seal.
The 1.69 OD Packer is run in the hole on tubing
and set by dropping a ball and applying pressure
to the tubing. When the element is inflated the ball
seat shears out and leaves a flow path open
through the tool. Fluid can then be injected below
the tool. To release the Packer, the tubing is picked
up to shear screws and shift the tool into the equalize position.

WARNING
Use of Baker equipment contrary to
manufacturers specification may result in
property damage, serious injury or fatality.

Features / Benefits
New generation inflatable packing element

After this shear event, the tubing should be left in

tension during the period required to equalize
pressure across the packer. After equalization,
weight is slacked off on the tool followed by a picking up on the tubing to shear another set of screws
and shift it into the deflate position.
The Top Connection of the 1.69 OD Packer is a
1.25 OD Acme Connection which is compatible
with the 1.69 OD Inflatable Product Line. Typically
a 1.69 FA Disconnect (Material No. H379-701701) is run immediately above the 1.69 OD Packer as an emergency disconnect (Running Tool).

provides high differential pressure capabilities

when set at large expansion ratios.
Small ODs permit the tool to pass through the
production tubing, set in the casing below,
performing
remedial
and
stimulation
operations.
All setting, equalizing and unsetting functions
are accomplished using hydraulic pressure or
tension.
Run on coiled or threaded tubing
Emergency hydraulic disconnect in the running
tool allows the coiled tubing to be released from
the packer.

Backside Pressure Limitations

This Packer is not hydraulically balanced during Injection. If the tubing pressure is greater than the
annulus pressure above the packer, the tubing to packer force is downward. This force helps keep the
Packer in the Injection position and is not of concern. If, however, the tubing pressure is less than the
annulus pressure above the packer, the tubing to packer force is upward and can cause a problem. This
pressure situation would occur during backside pressure testing ect. This force will shift the Packer into
the Equalize Position if it is not restrained by the shear screws in the Equalization mechanism or with
weight slacked off on the tool. This unfavorable Packer to tubing force is of more concern with larger size
work strings and when the equalization mechanism is lightly pinned. The following Back Side pressure
values assume no that weight can be placed on the Packer:

General Operations
1. Review Element Rating Chart and Shear
Screw Chart to determine an appropriate Inflation Pressure (i.e. Ball Shear Seat Pressure).
Check to see that the Ball Shear Seat has the
proper number of screws. A general recommendation: Use 3 screws for 5 1/2 casing, 4
screws for 4 1/2 casing, and 5 screws for setting in all smaller size tubulars.
2. Make an estimate of what the surface pressure will be when the Ball Shear Seat blows
out. In general, this will be the Ball Shear Seat
pressure plus the bottom hole pressure minus
the hydrostatic pressure of a filled work string
column. If this number is small (or negative),
you will not see a surface indication of inflation.
Special setting procedures must be employed
to inflate in a slow, controlled manner in these
situations.
3. Running Packer in Hole - Run tool in at a
moderate rate (30-60 ft/min) If the Delayed Inflate Ring contains one screw, fluid can be circulated through the tubing at a rate of no more
than 1/4 bbl/min as the tool is run in the hole. If
two screws are in place, the rate can be in-

creased to 1/2 bbl/min Perform weight checks

every 3000 feet and record. Perform weight
check just before passing through each seating
nipple or other restrictions in the tubing.
4. Setting Packer - When Packer is at setting
depth, insert .375 inch setting ball into tubing.
Pump ball at a rate of 1/2 BPM through the reel
at surface and allow to fall to the packer. If the
ball is pumped onto the shear seat, pressure
can build up quickly and shear the screws in the
seat before the packer element is properly inflated. This is of particular concern when the
surface pressure indication is expected to be
small.
With the ball on seat, pressure up slowly on the
tubing to open the delayed setting sleeve. This
may be noted as a slight pressure drop at the
surface. Inflate the element in 500 psi increments, wait 5 minutes at each pressure
change. Inflating the element slowly allows the
element to conform to the shape of the hole. At
500 psi over the delayed setting sleeve shear
pressure slack off weight on the tool (20003000 lb). This weight will indicate that the pack-

er is set. Continue to pressure up on the element until ball shear seat is sheared open.
5. Injecting, Testing or Producing - Fluid can
now be injected into the formation below the
packer by pumping through the tubing or into
the formation above the packer by pumping
down the production string. If applying pressure
to the backside, be aware of pressure limitations of the equalizing valve (Differential Pressure And Temperature Limitations Chart).
Monitor tubing tension during treatment as
shortening or elongation of work string may occur. Always keep weight slacked off on the tool.
6. Equalizing Across Packer - Equalize across
the packer before deflation to prevent the tool
from being pumped up or down the hole. To
equalize pickup weight on the packer, shearing
the screws in the equalizing valve and shift it
into the equalize position. Hold in tension until
surface pressures indicate packer is equalized,
then wait an additional 10 minutes.
7. Releasing Packer - Set weight down on packer (1000-2000 lb) to shift the tool back into the
injection position, then pick up on workstring to
shear the screws in the release mechanism to
shift packer to deflate position. The loss of
weight will indicate packer is released. Wait an
additional 10 minutes before pulling out of hole.
Caution
When pulling out of hole slow down passing
through all restrictions in the tubing string.

Upper Seal for Spotting Applications

If the first "up" position is to be used to spot fluid then the PEEK seal should be used. The PEEK
Seal Assembly (item 14 on the Parts List) is designed to be operated under pressure and to reseal.
An installation Tool For Peek Seal System
(H04-68784-00) makes installation of this seal system easier with less danger of damaging the Peek
Seal.
If this mechanism is used as a spotting
valve it can not be used as a equalizing valve
on the same job because there is only on such
position. Equalization must be achieved with a circulating sub in the tool string, control of pressure
above the packer or some other means.

Upper Seal for Equalizing Applications

If the first "up" position is to be used as an
equalize position rather than a spotting position the
PEEK Seal Assembly can be replaced by O-rings.
O-rings are easier to replace, are less expensive
and seal better if the seal surface is some what
damaged. The parts required to convert the upper
seal to an O-ring seal are:
Seal Ring: H04-68830-00
O-ring: HWW-B118-H40
O-ring: HWW-B121-H40

Testing, Filling Element with Fluid

Test tool after assembly to be sure that all seals
are in place and sealing properly; and to ensure
that element is filled with fluid. It is strongly recommended that all testing and filling of the tool be performed with oil to prevent corrosion problems
during storage or shipment.

1. Remove Bleeder Plug (43) from the Bottom

Adaptor Sub (35) and using the Fill-up Manifold
connect oil line to bleeder port.
2. Slide the appropriate test casing (H04-6248000) over the element.
3. Remove Shear Screws from Shear Adaptor
(36) and completely disconnect Shear Adaptor
from Bottom Adaptor (35).
4. Test and Fill Element (34) with oil:
a. With the bottom end higher than the top end
of tool, pump fluid into Element through the
bleeder port until element expands 1/8". Allow element to deflate through the manifold.
Repeat until all air is out of element.
b. Pump fluid into element through bleeder port
until element expands against the test sleeve
ID. Apply pressure. Do not apply more than
50% of shear pressure setting of the Delayed
Inflate Ring. Applying too much pressure will
make the Poppet Valve (30) difficult to unseat without shearing the Delayed Inflate
Ring in step #8.
c. Hold pressure for 5 minutes; check for leaks
and then deflate through the manifold. Remove Fill-up Manifold but do not reinstall
Bleeder Plug.
5. Screw Test Bull Plug (Material No. H04-6495500) onto Top Sub (18).
6. Install Bull Plug Guide (Material No. H0465533-00) into END CAP (39) for use as a test
plug.
7. Fill Mandrel (38) ID with oil removing all air.

8. While observing the bleeder port, apply pressure through Test Bull Plug in the Running
Tool. Pressure should build up to 200-400 psi
and then rapidly drop off (There may also be a
clicking noise of the Poppet hitting the Delayed
Inflate Ring). This is an indication that the Poppet Valve has come off of its seat in the Poppet
Valve Sub. Pressure should rapidly build back;
indicating the Delayed Inflate Ring has not
sheared. Do not apply more than 75% of shear
pressure setting of the Delayed Inflate Ring or
it may weaken the shear screws in the Delayed
Inflate Ring. If pressure drops off and flow is observed through the bleed port, the Delayed Inflate Ring has sheared and it will need to be repinned.
9. Hold pressure for 5 minutes while checking for
leaks. Bleed pressure and remove oil line. Remove test plug from the Running Tool.
10.Re-connect Shear Adaptor (36) and install
Shear Screws. Re-install Bleeder Plug (43) into
bleed port.
11.Remove Bull Plug Guide from END CAP (39).
Make up Shear Seat Housing and Shear Seat
Retainer (40,42) to Mandrel. Testing is complete.

9. Unscrew the Top Sub (18) from the Upper Mandrel (22). Unscrew the Seal Retainer (19) from
the Seal Housing (20).
10.Unscrew the Seal Housing (20) from the Housing (21). Drive the Seal Housing (20) from the
Upper Mandrel (22).Unscrew the Housing from
the Collet Housing Adaptor (28).
11.Unscrew the Upper Collet (23) from the Middle
Collet (25) and remove the Upper Mandrel (22)
from the Middle Mandrel (24).
12.The Upper Collet (23) is removed from the Upper Mandrel (22) by placing the Upper Collet
Removal Ring (H04-68785-00) over the tapped
holes in the Upper Collet and installing the Hex
Socket Head Cap Screws (45) into these holes
to lift the collet fingers up high enough to get
them over the upset end of the Upper Mandrel
13.Remove the Roll Pins (11) from the Middle
Mandrel (24). Force collet over upset until it
snaps off the Middle Mandrel.
14.Unscrew the Release Sleeve (26) from the Middle Mandrel (24). Unscrew Latch Sub (27) from
Mandrel (38) and remove Mandrel from the
Collet Housing Adaptor (28). Disassembly is
now complete.
