To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Anne Couturier, and I am very interested in the Social Studies position at your
school. I graduated from Aquinas College with a bachelors degree in Secondary Social Studies
with a minor in Political Science. I have a valid Secondary Social Studies RX certification, and I
am scheduled to take the Political Science CD certification test in July 2015 which will complete
my state certification. I possess many of the qualifications for your position: successful
collaboration with staff, the ability to work with a diverse population, and the ability to be a
leader within the greater community.
The time I spent as a long term substitute at the Holt Junior High School, teaching 7th grade
History, was invaluable. Taking over the Social Studies position mid-year challenged me not
only to develop and execute lessons, but it has taught me the value of collaboration with staff.
When I first began my journey, I had the full support of the entire staff. Our collaboration has
extended well beyond the classroom, and has included working with diverse groups of students.
My overlying goal as a teacher is to create a safe environment for my students, which allows
them the opportunity to grow socially, intellectually and ultimately to become life-long learners.
While working in Holt, I have worked with students who come from all types of backgrounds.
As a teacher I must be able to converse with all of my students and parents in productive ways. I
have accomplished this by building a safe community with in my classroom, and I have extended
this to parents through phone calls, emails, and parent meetings. Developing this supportive
community has been the key to my students success both within the classroom and beyond.
Finally, I have participated in several leadership positions within the school community. I have
volunteered time as an assistant golf coach for the Holt Junior Varsity Girls Golf Team, which
has allowed me to connect with people outside my building. I took an active role collaborating
with my fellow teachers during professional development, and I became part of a strong team of
teachers and administrators. Leadership experiences have shown me the value in building
relationships within the greater community and is one of the primary reasons I feel I would be a
valued part of your school community. I would love the opportunity to interview for the History
position, and to discuss in detail my qualifications. Thank you for your time and consideration, I
look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,

Anne Couturier
