What political, economic and social divisions in L.A.

nations
hinder successful democracies?
There are many problems in Latin America and thats evident because they are
considered a third world/developing country. Most third world countries are very
poor and dont have a strong economy at all. Latin America is poor, but their
biggest country, Brazil, has a large economy. However, the social problems and
inequality are still the root for their rural poverty.
Mega-cities brought huge populations to urban areas, but left rural areas to
diminish. These rural places, called slums, have no running water, barely any
food, and a lot of disease. This creates more inequality in the nation and equality
is a requirement for a democracy. On the other hand, society then stretches to a
higher class. The upper class residences are right next to the slums and it is said
that you can see directly into the broken areas from the high apartment
buildings. Another thing that ties into this is the caste system implemented in
Latin America. Its clear that it is a race based system and you can tell, just by the
color of one's skin, what they contribute to the country. This huge income gap and
the social caste system are a couple economic and social problems that add to
Latin America not being able to have a successful democracy.
Another economic problem is that Central and South America are not connected
to the North American Free Trade Agreement. Mexico, Canada, and the US signed
this agreement in 1994 and Mexico flourished into a real democracy. It gave
Mexican farmers, factory workers, etc., equal access to customers. This is what
consolidated democracy in Mexico. The problem is, however, the poorer nations of
Central and Latin America do not have this privilege. Developing countries will
never be able to have a turnaround because no one helps them with their
economic conflicts.
A socialist president, Salvador Allende, was killed in a coup backed by the US CIA.
He was implementing reforms for the country to help the poor, but they never got
put into place. This was a big mistake because then, the US started supporting
brutal dictators only because they were democratic and not communist. This
created huge tensions between Latin America and the US because they started
not to trust them. With him being in office, he could have helped the social
classes become more equalized.
Many events that happened in the past are what hinders Latin America to have a
successful democracy.
