Smoking statistics
Adults
There are about 10 million adults who smoke
cigarettes in Great Britain:
this is about a sixth of the total UK population
Young people
Two-thirds of smokers start before age 18.
In the UK more than 200,000 children aged 11- 15 start
smoking each year.
It is illegal to sell cigarettes to any person under the age
of 18.
More than half (59%) of all adults report that they have
never smoked.
Addiction
60% of smokers say they would find it hard to last a
whole day without smoking.
Tobacco smoke
Contains over 4,000 chemical compounds, present
as either gases or as tiny particles. These include
carbon monoxide, arsenic, formaldehyde, cyanide,
benzene, toluene and acrolein.
