PD Plan- 3rd Grade

Goals:
1. Teachers will work together cohesively with their peers
2. Teachers will identify specific CCSS for Mathematics aligned with their
grade level
3. Teachers will be confident when teaching EngageNy- Grade 3, Module 6
4. Teachers will learn a new teaching technique for this lesson
5. Teachers will increase their repertoire of asking cognitive demand questions,
appropriate for grade 3.
Preparation and Materials:
- Copies of article: Collecting Data Outdoors, Making Connections to the
Real World
- Chart paper
- Markers
- M&Ms
- M&M Activity- Copies
- Have all teachers bring some sort of personal technology
- Bring or have access to a copy of EngageNy- Grade 3, Module 6
Time
Task
8:30-8:40
- Welcome and Purpose of PD (Teachers will pick one of
4 cards- spades, diamonds, hearts, or clubs. Teachers
with the same suits will sit at the same table)
- Review PD norms
- Silence all phone devices
- Respect the speaker
- Keep all side conversations to a minimum
- Participate fully
- Review schedule for the day
8:40-9:00
- Read article on data collection (Collecting Data
Outdoors: Making Connections to the Real World)

- Depending on the amount of groups/people, I will
appropriately divide sections of the article
- Ideally, I would like 3-4 people per group, and have 5
groups
9:00-9:15
- Make a Poster

9:15-9:30
9:30-9:45
9:45-11:15

11:15-12:15
12:15-1:45

1:45-2:45

2:45-3:00

- Each group will summarize key concepts on a


poster
- Presentations
- Each group/table will present their poster to the
whole group
- Break
- M&M Survey Activity
- Pass out a cup of M&Ms
- Sort M&Ms by color
- Fill out frequency table, horizontal bar graph, and
pictograph chart
- Complete fraction activity, pie chart data,
- Answer a questionnaire on what you just learned
from the activity
- Presentation
- Share findings, thoughts, and potential problems
with students. State what you liked about the
activity or how you would modify sections of the
activity
Lunch
- Work through Module 6, Lessons 1-5
- Give direct instruction on Data collecting
- Give teachers time to complete lessons out of the
EngageNy workbook curriculum
- Correct answers whole group, answer any
misconceptions teacher may have
- Grade level planning
- Teachers are able to collaborate with teachers at
their school site, or teachers at other school sites
- Create a timeline of completing certain
lessons/modules in a given amount of time
- Personal experiences with certain lessons (Whats
working or not working)
- Exit Ticket reflection/PD feedback
- What did you like about this PD?
- What would you improve or change?
- What did you find useful?
- What would you change for the next PD?
