Since Stephen Sondheim's Feburary 2009 Q&A with journalist Frank Rich at the Kimmel Center, there's been a renewed interest in the lyricist/composer's work: Bernadette Peters starred in Broadway revivals of 1971's Follies and 1973's A Little Night Music; Henry Miller's Theater in New York was renamed for Sondheim: his two-volume collection of lyrics (Finishing the Hat/Look, I Made a Hat) was published; an all-star production of 1970's Company (featuring Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Hendricks and Stephen Colbert) was given a DVD and limited theatrical release; and, most visibly, Rob Marshall's recent major motion picture version of 1987's Into the Woods got critical raves and grossed $210 million worldwide. And the 85-year-old Sondheim announced he's currently working on a new musical, adapting two Bufiuel films, Philadelphia's Arden Theatre Company has become one of the country's leading Sondheim exponents since the 1990s, with productions of his shows on a near-annual basis — through June 28 they're staging Passion, his 1994 Tony-winning musical about romantic obsession in 19th century Italy (see our review here).
