TheIllinoisMusicEducatorsAssociationhasanannualconferencewherethetop
performingstudentsfromalloverthestatecometogetherandperformasanallstateensemble.
ThefollowingisareflectionreportthatIhadtocompleteformymusiceducationcapstone
coursethatdiscussedtheleadershipandteachingpedagogyoftheallstateconductor.
A)
Theproportionofapproval/disapprovalactionsoftheteacher:
Thedirectorhadaveryharmoniousbalancebetweenherusepraisingthechoirandpushingthe
choirtoworkharder.Forexample,whensheheardthewrongconsonantbeingusedinapassage
shestated:IhearanS,isitanSoraZ?towhichthestudentsallansweredZ.Thiswayof
correctingtheproblemallowedforthestudentstodemonstratetheircollectiveknowledgewhile
alsomakingsurethestudentswhoweresingingincorrectlyknowthattheymadeamistake.
B)
Whatbehaviorsdidtheteacherreinforceandhowitisreinforced:
Inthepassageofmusictheywererehearsing,thedirectorwantedtofocusonhavingunified
vowelsounds.ShestartedbystatingthatVowelsareyourbestfriend,andconsonantsare
someonethatyoujustpassinthehallway.Shethenhadtheensembleusetheirhandstocreate
aphysicalgesturetocorrectoveropeningonthevowels.Aftersheranthatpassageagain,the
voweltonewassopurethatyoucouldhearthechoircreatingovertonesduringthatmomentof
rehearsal.Elated,thedirectoraskedifthechoirmembershadheardtheovertones,thenranthat
passageagaintorecreatethesameeffect.Thedirectorthenthankedthechoirforcorrectingthe
problemandmovedontothenextsection.
C)
Whethertheteachermaintainseyecontactwiththestudents:
Despitethefactthatthisdirectorhadcloseto200students,Ifeltthatshedidanexcellentjob
scanningtheroomandlookingatallsectionsofthegroupwhilegivinginstruction.Tomeshe

seemedtobeabitmoreforward/inherscorewhentheywererunninglongersectionsofapiece,
butIbelievethisisbecausetheywerestillintheworkingphaseoftherehearsalprocess.
Overall,IquiteenjoyedwatchingDr.EdithA.Copleyworkwiththehonorsallstate
choir.Hermethodsandtechniquesforworkingwithover200studentsatonetimewerequite
impressive.Themostinterestingaspectaboutherleadershipstylewasthateventhoughshewas
addressingalargebodyofstudents,shespokeinsuchawaythatmadeitfeellikeshewas
havingapersonalconversationwitheachindividualstudent.Youcouldtellthatshehadgained
thetrustandrespectoftheensemble(orherfollowers)becauseshewasabletobefirmlycorrect
theensemblewhenitmademistakeswithoutdiscouragingthestudents,andalsoprovidedthem
withenoughauthenticpraisetoencouragethestudentstocontinuetoworkwiththesamelevel
ofdedicationtohelpthemstayfocused.Dr.Copleygavememanyconductingandleadership
techniquesthatIwillbeabletoapplyinmyclassroomteaching.
