TITLE/TYPE OF LESSON Butterfly Life Cycle

B.

CONTEXT OF LESSON
Students should have learned about butterflies last year in first grade. This lesson will
review what they already know, but will also introduce some new vocabulary for them.

C.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

D.

E.

Understand what are the

broad generalizations the
students should begin to
develop? (These are
typically difficult to assess
in one lesson.)

Know what are the facts,

rules, specific data the
students will gain through
this lesson? (These
knows must be assessed
in your lesson.)

Do what are the specific

thinking behaviors students
will be able to do through
this lesson? (These will also
be assessed in your lesson.)

Students will organize

different animals life
cycles based on the part of
the animals lives.

Students will summarize

the butterfly life cycle,
using the words egg, larva,
pupa, and adult.

Students will show the

butterfly life cycle.

ASSESSING LEARNING

PROCEDURE
(Include a DETAILED description of each step. Write what you will SAY and DO.)
1. Play the song. This will be a review to remind them about the life cycle and
introduce the life cycle.
2. Ask them what the 4 stages of the life cycle are, write them on the board and make
sure they see the new vocabulary, larva and pupa
3. Demonstrate the dance, substituting the larva and pupa for caterpillar and chrysalis.
Have them do the dance a few times.
4.

Give the students the pyramid fold, they will fill in the blanks and cut it to fold it like
a pyramid. If they need help, they can work with a partner.

H.

DIFFERENTIATION
This lesson works with different learners. It uses music and dance to learn/review the
material and a worksheet to make sure they can describe it. If students have low
language skills, they can still dance through the metamorphosis even if they cant
verbally explain the changes.

I.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO
ABOUT IT? Think about this! It may help you avoid an embarrassing situation.
The computer may not be working. If this happens, we will skip the video and go
straight into having the students tell me to parts of the butterfly so we can do the dance.
The students may not be able to finish on time. If that happens, they will be able to finish
the pyramid later in the day.
