The Unseen Poem Question A, Section 3, Paper 2


In this section of the exam, you will be asked to read a poem you have
not seen or studied before and answer questions on it.
You will be given the opportunity to showcase what you have learnt
about poetry and how you can respond to a poem.
Remember you arent expected to be familiar with the poem. Therefore
there wont be any information asked in the questions that cant be
gained from careful reading!

Things to be aware of:


What does the title suggest?
What is the theme of the poem. (Take note
of the 1st and last lines)
Who is the speaker and to whom are they
speaking to?
What type of language is used?

What language techniques are used? See handout


What sounds does the poem make and what techniques
does the poet use to create these sounds?

What feelings are in the poem? How does the poet


convey these feelings? Eg tone etc

What is YOUR response to the poem?

Remember..
20 marks for the Unseen poem = 15 minutes
Always read the introduction to the poem carefully.
Read the instructions carefully. You are generally asked 2 x 10 mark
questions.

Always read the poem at least twice before you begin answering.
Do not write a few sentences!!
Refer to the poem to support the points you make. Include quotations.
