3 Queens Meetup In Liverpool

THREE FAMOUS ocean liners
have sailed together in Liverpool for the first time to mark
Cunards 175th anniversary.
The Queen Mary 2, the Queen
Victoria and the Queen Elizabeth saluted the city where
Samuel Cunard began his transatlantic line in 1840.
Thousands of people lined
the River Mersey to watch the
three queens perform a synchronised sailing display.
As the fleet completed its
manoeuvres, the Red Arrows
performed a fly-past.
Captain Christopher Wells,
who was at the helm of the
Queen Mary 2, said it was a
very special weekend.
It allows us to celebrate our
anniversary in the city where
the company was founded.
To have that celebration is
very important not only to us,
but also to the city, he said.

Charles Meets Sinn Fein For First Time On Ireland Visit

PRINCE CHARLES began an official
visit to Ireland by meeting the leader
of the Irish nationalist Sinn Fein party
for the first time, in another symbolic
milestone of the peacemaking process.

This is Charles third trip to the Irish
Republic since the outlawed IRA called a
cease-fire in 1994. On the following day
he visited Mullaghmore, where the IRA

RRArmy Removes WWII Bomb Near

Londons Wembley Stadium

THE ARMY safely removed an unexploded World War II bomb

found near Londons Wembley Stadium May 22.
The 110lb bomb was discovered by workers at a construction site near the stadium. It is believed to have been dropped
over London during German bombing raids in the early 1940s.
The discovery of the device prompted police to evacuate
hundreds of people from their homes and offices, as army bomb
disposal experts worked through the night to try to defuse
the bomb. A blast wall was built around the site in case of an
accidental explosion.

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron,

on May 22, announced plans to crack
down on illegal immigration and
tighten Britains borders as new official figures showed a significant rise
in the number of migrants.
Net migration to Britain surged
to roughly 318,000 in 2014, up from
209,000 the year before, the Office
for National Statistics said. The figure,
which represents the estimated number of people moving to the country
for a year or more minus the number
departing, is the highest in a decade.
Immigration has become one of the
most divisive political issues in Britain, and increasing numbers of Britons
argue that uncontrolled migration has
a negative effect on the country from
employment to social infrastructure
such as housing and health services.
SPEECH
In his first speech on immigration
since he won a second term in the
general election, Cameron outlined
stricter controls targeting illegal migration, including giving police new
powers to seize immigrants earnings
if they do not have the right to work
in Britain.
While a strong country isnt one
that pulls up the drawbridge, it is one
that properly controls immigration,
he said.
The data showed that 641,000 immigrants came to Britain last year, up
by more than 100,000 since 2013. Of
those, just under half were from within
the European Union.
Under EU rules, citizens from the
28-nation trade bloc have the right to
live and work legally inside Britain.

Irelands First Gay

Marriage Possible By
July, Minister Says
DUBLIN (AP) Some of Irelands
gay couples planning a civil partnership may receive a surprisingly fast
upgrade to marriage.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald announced May 25 that the bill
to legalize gay marriage, following
its landslide approval in May 23
referendum, should be passed before
lawmakers planned July 16 summer
recess.
She says as part of the law, those
gay couples already scheduled to be
wed in civil partnership ceremonies
following the bills passage will have
their pre-booked events legally
upgraded to full-fledged marriages.
Fitzgerald said: I am very conscious that many couples will want
to get married as soon as possible. I
am working to make that happen.
Gay couples in Ireland have been
entitled to marriage-style civil partnerships since 2011. Like marriages,
these must be scheduled at least
three months in advance.

AN AUCTION in Chesterfield brought a unique

last month.
The buyer, a woman from London, is now
the owner of the Britains most expensive
ever number plate KR15 HNA.
The letters and numbers spell KRISHNA,
the name of the supreme Hindu Deity.
Amazingly, the starting bid for the plate
was just 27,000, but it soon reached the
final sales amount at the Casa Hotel.
The previous record for a number plate
was 100,000 for MR51 NGH.
Another plate, KR15 HAN brought in an
equally handsome figure of 98,500.
Matthew Dainton of DVLA Personalised
Registrations said: We had high hopes
for KR15 HAN and KR15 HNA after a lot of
interest being registered beforehand. Both of
these current style registrations contributed
to an enthralling atmosphere in the auction
hall, and its fantastic to see the prices they
have achieved.
Surprisingly, it is thought the buyer, an
Englishwoman of Indian heritage, does
not yet have a car on which to attach the
new plate.
The worlds most expensive plate cost

IN WHAT suggests that many are not happy

with the Conservative Party earning another
term as Government in Britain, a petition
has been launched for the North of England
to join Scotland.
It has been suggested that hundreds of
thousands of people in the north of England are apparently so disillusioned with
Westminster that they want to secede from
England and join Scotland.
Thousands of Northerners are backing
a petition on Change.org to create a new
border that would mean cities including
Liverpool, Manchester, Preston, Hull, Leeds
and Sheffield would become Scottish.
According to the petition website, the
deliberations in Westminster are becoming increasingly irrelevant to the north of
England. The northern cities feel far greater
affinity with their Scottish counterparts
such as Glasgow and Edinburgh than with
the ideologies of the London-centric south.
The needs and challenges of the north
cannot be understood by the endless parade
of old Etonions lining the frontbenches of the
House of Commons. The north of England
should join the newly independent Scotland
and regain control over its own destiny. We,
the people of the north, demand that in the
event that Scotland becomes independent
the border between England and the New
Scotland be drawn along a line that runs
between the River Dee and the mouth of The
Humber (see map above).
At time of going to press the petition had
nearly 50,000 signatures.

Royal Baby Charlotte Born

Union Jack is thrilled to introduce our readers to our new columnist Richard Lamberth
I LOVE LONDON. This is my main qualification for writing this column and I am
delighted to be bringing you tales from the soft under-belly of London Life! I have had a
long business career mainly based around the City Of London and over the last 25 years
I have seen the UK capital manoeuvre to become the financial and multi cultural centre
of the world. As a child I used to love the story of Dick Whittington finding the streets
of London paved with gold probably too young to understand the metaphor it was
naturally a disappointment to find the grey flagstones when I first got there but for many
people gold has indeed been discovered right now it is the property developers digging
up the nuggets! Over the next five years an astonishing 400 skyscrapers (over 40 storeys
high) will be added to Londons skyline so no surprise that virtually all the construction
cranes in the world can be found within the orbital M25 motorway.
I qualified at the London School of Journalism and I live in Roehampton, south west
London with my wife, Anita and four sons. My young sons are actually at school in
Portugal so we spend a lot of time there but my main business interests revolve around
consultancy in the insurance, financial services and real estate sectors which brings me
back to the city I love all the time. London is an exhilarating, historic, beautiful and
dynamic place to live but can at the same time be overwhelming, congested, noisy and
brutal whatever way you look at it, its never boring and I want to bring the UK capital
to life for you with this column.

The Darling Buds Of May

May has been an exciting month for Londoners. The British General Election built to its
climax on May 7 and the unexpected outcome
left everyone stunned. Actually, London is
a bit different from the rest of the UK but
remains the focus at election time as the seat
of government. How so different? Well, the
city is an absolute melting pot of multicultural
diversity did you know if it was in France, it
would be the fourth biggest city there in terms
of French population? The average age of a
Londoner is 34 and some three million city
dwellers were not born there. This all makes
London lean to the left but the Labour Party
failed to gain very much ground at all with
a net gain of just a couple of parliamentary
seats. This was probably one of the greatest
measures of Labour leader Ed Milibands failure to even motivate his traditional supporter
base to come out for him on the day. The
Liberal Party was wiped out in London and
lost some senior MPs including Vince Cable
the former Business Secretary and veteran
MP Simon Hughes. Another famous name
was lost from the London political scene
when Oscar-winning actress, Glenda Jackson retired from Parliament this time around.
And so a majority Conservative government
under David Cameron reigns supreme.

VE Day Celebrations

Hot on the heels (literally the next day,

Friday, May 8), came the celebrations to
commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE
Day, which marked the end of the war in
Europe. Once again, as in 1945, London
was the focus of these events. The capital
was bombed heavily and suffered some
43,000 civilian casualties from German
bombs which continued for the six years of
war the last doodlebug or flying bomb
landed in west London just five weeks before
VE Day in 1945.

World War II veterans assembled in

Whitehall, proudly sporting their hard-earned
medals but looking increasingly frail as the
years go by. In five years time, the 75th Anniversary will be a big one but as these dates
pass, there are fewer people around who
were actually there. The BBC held a fantastic
concert on Horse Guards Parade, the historic
setting where Winston Churchill appeared on
the balcony 70 years ago to declare the war in
Europe over. The show was hosted by everpopular BBC radio broadcaster, Chris Evans
in a touching tribute to the men and women
from the United Kingdom and our allies who
gave so much in the fight against tyranny.
London still bears the scars of six years in
the front line of World War II. Many streets
feature out of place buildings in fine Victorian
and Regency terraces where the bombs fell
and post war austerity dictated an altogether
more utilitarian style. There are the remains
of churches almost completely destroyed in
the Blitz like St Dunstans originally built in
Saxon times and which just about survived
the Great Fire of London in 1666 only to
be razed to the ground by the Luftwaffe.
Famously of course, the nearby masterpiece
of Sir Christopher Wrens, St Pauls Cathedral
survived providing possibly the most iconic
picture of London at war.

London also saw the first appearance of

the new Royal baby in May. Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana Windsor was born on
June 2, 2015 at St Marys Hospital, Westminster. The name was a PR masterpiece with its
nod of respect to both Williams mother and
grandmother. The second child to Prince William now becomes third in line for the top job
with everyone else on the list moving down
a peg. The usual press and media frenzy
outside the hospital and attendant Union Jack
wielding royalists were taken aback when the
Royal couple went home the same day as the
baby was born. They then stayed just a few
days at Kensington Palace before heading to
their country home in Norfolk.

The new generation of Royals have added

new life to what had become a seemingly
outdated institution and the Royal family are
enjoying a level of popularity not seen for
decades. With many members of The Firm
seen doing normal jobs and engaging with
ordinary people at all levels, this is an institution which Brits and Londoners in particular
are keen to hang onto. One of the joys of
London life is seeing members of the Royal
family on a fairly regular basis just recently
I was crossing the road in Westminster with
my children when I spotted a sleek burgundy
Rolls Royce approaching with the Royal crest
on the roof signifying that Her Majesty the
Queen was on board we just watched her
glide past a few feet away from us! Europeans
cant seem to get enough of the British Royal
family and many in the crowd outside the
hospital where the new baby was born were
from our mainland neighbours particularly
eastern Europe maybe food for thought for
some of the political parties keen to stir up
nationalistic sentiment in advance of Britains
in/out referendum on membership of the
European Union scheduled for a couple of
years hence.

Billy Elliott Musical

End show, Billy Elliott The Musical saw its

Created by Londoner Sir Elton John but
apparently the brainchild of his husband,
David Furnish this musical extravaganza has

Elton said on the evening Its a wonderful

THE ROYAL LETTERS

Badgers, Beef, Fish:

Letters Show Prince
Charles Passions
FOLLOWING years of legal wrangling
the government, last month released a
series of letters between
Prince Charles and senior
officials that were written
about a decade ago. The
communictions between
them have been kept private until now.
The correspondence
provides a glimpse of
Charles writing style, as
well as his efforts to influence officials on topics
from badgers and albatrosses to climate change.
Here are some excerpts:
THE ARMED FORCES
Charles mostly stayed
away from hard politics,
but did on one occasion
raise his concerns about
cuts to the defense budget.
Writing about the delayed replacement of military aircraft,
he said: I fear that this is just one more
example of where our Armed Forces are
being asked to do an extremely challenging job (particularly in Iraq) without the
necessary resources.
Sent to PM Tony Blair, Sept 8, 2004
FARMING AND SUPPORTING
BRITISH PRODUCE
Every support must be given to beef
farmers so that they can seize the new
opportunities and cope with the reduction in support in other words they
must be encouraged to co-operate and
learn about marketing ... I wondered if
it would be possible for the government
to channel funds specifically to help the
beef sector...?
So much depends on the consumer
demanding British produce and I only
wish that more could be done to encourage people to buy British ... it would be
splendid if the Government could find
innovative ways to give the necessary
lead.
To Tony Blair, Sept 8, 2004
ILLEGAL FISHING
I particularly hope that the illegal
fishing of the Patagonian Toothfish will

PM Cameron Reshuffles Cabinet That Will Face Conservative Rebellion

By Sylvia Hui
PRIME MINISTER David Camerons
Conservatives may have won the British
election and ushered their coalition partner out the door, but that doesnt mean
its all smooth sailing for his government
for the next five years.
With influential Euroskeptics clamoring in his own party and a very slim majority in Parliament, Cameron will have
a hard time tackling the big headaches
looming over his second term: Britains
membership in the 28-nation European
Union and the growing movement for
Scottish independence.
He would like to be seen as leading a
governing party which is united on a core
issue at the center of the political debate,
but thats unlikely to happen, said Colin
Hay, a British politics professor at the
Paris Institute of Political Studies. Its
going to be really tough.
Camerons Conservatives won an
unexpected majority in last months
election, ensuring that he returns to
10 Downing Street with enough power
to govern alone. His first term saw
Cameron sharing power with the leftof-center Liberal Democrats, who held
key positions in a sometimes-awkward
coalition government.
Within hours of declaring victory,
Cameron re-appointed his four highestranking ministers those heading defense, the Treasury, home and foreign
affairs to their posts.
Mr Cameron announced his cabinet
reshuffle the week after the election.
STABILITY
The message from Mr Cameron is one
of stability and continuity: Keep calm
and carry on, as the Times newspaper
put it in a headline.
That is easier said than done in Britains rowdy Parliament, where Cameron
does not have full support from his party
on the two key topics of Scotland and
membership in the EU. The Conservatives now have a tiny majority holding
just over half of the House of Commons
650 seats meaning that a dozen defiant
Tories could potentially derail important
policies.
Rebellion has long simmered in the
Conservatives more right-wing factions,
where many want Britain to pull out of
the EU. The presence of the pro-EU
Liberal Democrats in the government
meant that such a move had been out
of the question for the past five years.
Radical Conservatives also disagree
with their more moderate colleagues
over how to deal with the question of
Scotland, where the separatist Scottish
National Party gained an unprecedented
landslide victory in the race for seats in
the British Parliament, winning 56 of
Scotlands 59 seats.
Cameron and those who back him
will do everything to keep Scotlands
centuries-old union with England, but
some Conservatives are leery of ceding
too much power to the north without
getting reciprocal benefits for England.
REFERENDUM
The infighting over those two issues
is likely to come to a head in the next

PM CAMERONS CABINET CHANGES

THERE WERE promotions for leading female ministers: Amber Rudd is Energy and
Climate Change Secretary while Anna Soubry and Priti Patel will attend Cabinet as
small business and employment ministers.

two years. Responding to widespread
British distrust of Brussels, Cameron
has promised to hold a referendum on
whether Britain should leave or stay
in the EU by the end of 2017. He has
maintained that he can negotiate better
terms for Britains EU membership and
increase Britains ability to control the
flow of EU migrants to the country.
Cameron had plans to meet with restive Conservative legislators to discuss
plans for EU reform in an effort to unify
the party before discussions with EU
leaders about possible modifications to
the terms of Britains membership.
But many rank-and-file Conservatives
want much tougher changes, and some
have made up their minds that no settlement will be good enough.
Camerons two major dilemmas are
linked: A British withdrawal from the
EU would make Scottish nationalists
very unhappy and hasten their independence bid.
One area where Cameron will feel less
restraint in his new majority government
is about welfare cuts, which are expected
to hit the poor even harder than those
already implemented under his last

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron

said last month he would consider
handing over more power to Scotland,
but stopped short of agreeing to demands from Scotlands First Minister
Nicola Sturgeon to grant the territory
full fiscal autonomy.
Cameron and Sturgeon met in
Edinburgh for their first talks since
last months general election, in which
Sturgeons pro-independence Scottish
National Party gained unprecedented
national influence.
Sturgeon called the talks constructive, and said the two agreed
that previously drawn up plans to
transfer greater governing powers
from London to Scotland should be
implemented as soon as possible. But
she said she and Cameron disagreed on
whether Scotland should control all of
its tax and spending policies.
Scotland has its own parliament and

government, which decide policies on

topics including health care, justice
and education, but it must defer to the
central UK government in London on
broader issues such as defense, immigration and fiscal policies. The two
share the same currency the pound.
Sturgeons party upended Britains
political landscape last month making
the SNP the third-largest bloc in the
House of Commons after Camerons
Conservatives and the Labour Party
a force that Cameron cannot ignore.
The SNP failed to realize its dream
of making Scotland an independent
country last year, when Scots voted 55
percent to 45 percent to remain inside
the UK in a historic referendum. But
since then the partys popularity has
surged, not diminished, and Sturgeon
argues that support clearly shows
Scots want a sea change in British politics that listens to their aspirations.

Turmoil Stirs In Labour Party

AS THE DUST settled last month, the
Labour Party was struggling to regain
its balance after suffering one of its
worst election results in modern times.
Shocked by the extent of the loss, leaders
are trying to figure out how to rebuild the
party and regain the publics trust.
There is turmoil everywhere.
The countrys biggest union and top
funder has signaled it will have its say in
the leadership contest and a front-runner
for the job quit just days after launching
his bid. Its leader in Scotland won a confidence motion but resigned anyway.
Today the Labour Party stands at a
crucial juncture either we realize how
bad our defeat was, learn from that and
advance, Mark Ferguson, editor of the
LabourList blog, wrote in a commentary.
Or we deny the scale of our electoral,
cultural and emotional rejection by the
British people, curl up into a ball and,
slowly but surely, slip out of existence.
Labour, as the name implies, is supposed to be the party of the working man,
and woman a left-leaning organization
with the unions at its core. The unions
actually created the party over a century
ago to promote its causes in Parliament.

UNSHACKLE
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair
made great efforts to unshackle the
links when he became leader in 1994.
His decision to move the party to the
center so-called New Labour was a
recognition that the country had changed
fundamentally. The original foundations
of the Labour Party were no longer
there as the steelworks closed, the
shipbuilding yards were shuttered and
the coalmines abandoned.
Attracting the middle classes was the
mantra of Blairs years at the helm. His
partys comfort with wealth creation and
its insistence that income taxes would
not be raised worked Labour won three
consecutive election victories under Blair,
something it had never done before.
The changes Blair instituted sat
uneasily with many in the old ranks
of L
abour, who thought the party had
moved too far away from its core principles. Ed Miliband, who led the party to
its defeat on May 7, tried to bridge the
gap and introduced a series of modest but
headline-making tax-raising plans. But
his strategy didnt work and the party
remains divided and it now shows.

administration.
PLEDGED
The Conservative leader has pledged
to reduce the deficit by finding 12bn to
cut from the welfare bill in the next few
years. He has not revealed where the
money would come from.
The Lib Dems provided a kind of
counterbalance, said Hay. They helped
to hold the Conservative Party together
at a time when some on the right were
pushing for more cuts to welfare and
public services.
Without their coalition partners, the
Conservatives face a return of the unpleasant nickname theyve long tried to
shake: the Nasty Party.
Some analysts already detect shades
of the last majority Conservative government in this one. Like Cameron, former
Prime Minister John Major in the 1990s
had a fragile majority and struggled
to control a party deeply divided over
Europe.
But they also believe that Cameron is
a political realist. While he himself favors
staying in the EU, hes also canny enough
not to underestimate his rebellious party
members.

David said that his brother Ed, like

Ed defeated David in a battle for the

Do rest assured that you have a great

PUB QUIZ ANSWERS CALL OF ROMANCE

Former RAF Jet Pilot

Recovers From Injuries,
Begins Touching Life Story
RR By Ron Choularton

MARTIN LLOYDS story is one of

survival, refusal to give in, and sheer
determination.
Not that Martin offers his tale to anyone who will listen, it just happened that
after attending quiz nights at the Shakespeare Pub & Grille in San Diego, Martins life changed, and his previous life
events came to light after conversations
with two ladies. One, Negar Mirgoli, is
soon to be his wife, and the other lady
passed on his story to the Union Jack.
Martin, had served 14 years in the
Royal Air Force as fast jet flight crew, followed by earning his commercial pilots
licence and flew for British Airways
Express for a year, before he was hit by
a car driven by a 71-year-old.
Explaining to the UJ his devastation
Martin said: I had an ambition from six
years old to be an airline pilot, and I had
spent 30 years getting there before it all
got taken away.
Martin recalled: Sunday, May 31,
1998 at 2:15pm in Norfolk. In one incident I lost my driving licence, motorcycle
licence, HGV licence, flying licences and
ultimately my marriage licence when my
wife of nine years decided that after three
years of looking after me she couldnt
take it any longer and left.
BEGINNING
This was the beginning of Martins
story, to many it could have been the end.
Martin injected humour into the
description of his terrible injuries: I
broke 43 bones, had 53 units of blood,
11 operations resulting in 16 scars and
who knows how much brain damage, as
I was always this stupid!
But it would take more than humour to
see the Londoner through three months
in hospital which saw him lose the whole
of his right leg and have his right arm
fixed at 90 degrees at the elbow. Martin
told us: This limb was so badly smashed
(I went over the bonnet of the Vauxhall
Cavalier and through the front windscreen my arm broke the glass) that it
doesnt have an elbow and there is not
much muscle, skin or nerve tissue left.
Martins determination came to the
fore, as he didnt view any of his injuries
as a handicap, and, over the last 15 years
he has, become the first handicapped
flight instructor, and then examiner, in
Europe. He is a commercial pilot on both
sides of the Atlantic, and the first leg amputee helicopter pilot in North America.
CALIFORNIA
Moving to California in 2003 Martin
took up a position as the Chief Flight
Instructor with a company in El Cajon,
CA, at Gillespie Field and is also Head
of Training.
The aforementioned wife-to-be?
Martin tells the tale from that fateful
quiz night meeting forward: Negar had
already told me on that first evening that
she was afraid of flying and that I had to
take her, so she called me two days later
(I was going to call after three days so I
didnt appear either too desperate nor
uninterested) and we arranged a flight.
I was determined to be professional and
not too forward, and it took me another
month before we officially got together.
With a sense of fun, Martin told us: I
took the unorthodox step of presenting
her with a Resume to apply for the position as her boyfriend!
SURPRISE
Fast-forward to just a few months
ago: Since we met at Table 9 for that
September 2011 Quiz night, I thought it
was about time we got hitched, and what

better place to spring the surprise than
at the same place? Martin, now 53, said
jokingly: I didnt want to do the timehonoured thing and get down on one
knee, as with only having one, I would
fall over! So, I came up with a plan to use
the Quiz Mistress to announce a bonus
question for just one person (Negar) at
the end of the question session.
This is where the second lady, Shakespeares General Manager and Quiz
Mistress Ruth Barton, enters the story
Martin met Ruth before the quiz, and
she was excited to be a collaborator in
his romantic scheme. And, at the right
moment Ruth read out loud to the packed
pub: We have a special bonus question
this evening However It is only
for one person Negar Mirgoli and is a
request from Martin Lloyd. The question
is Will you marry him?
Negars answer?
YES, of course!!!
Loud cheering, and applause followed
by extra libations!
Editors note:
I contacted Negar after hearing of the
happy evening. It did not surprise me that
she had a story of her own.
She was born in Tehran, Iran and
immigrated to The US in 1979 due to the
countrys revolution. The family left their
home country with four suitcases on a
90-day visa to the US. Negar describes
herself as fabulous at 45, and joked:
Thirty-six years later, we are still here.
No, I am not illegal, anymore!
I asked Negar how she has dealt with

the changes in the the last few years of

her life?
Her answer was more than enlightening: You have no idea how loaded your
question really is! I am a survivor, as is
Martin. When life hands me lemons, I
dont just make lemonade. I open up a
lemon stand, and sell lemons, lemonade,
lemon tarts, lemon cake etc ...
ROLL
No one sets off thinking that their
lives will turn out the way it does. We
must all roll with the punches. If you
are referring to how has my life changed
since dating Martin and how has his restrictions affected me? I will reply this
way Over the years I have dated many
men looking for Mr Right. With Martin,
I can see what his short comings are.
Most of the whole bodied individuals
that I have dated had the right packing
on the exterior, but were very emotionally disabled. At least with Martin I can
tell what is wrong with him. I do not
treat Martin any different than the rest.
We have disagreements and arguments
when Martin is willing to engage with
me, just like any other couple. There
really is no difference. Martin is a very
generous man who loves me a lot. I
always wanted to be with someone who
thought that my crazy was amazing. And
he does!!
Martins final thoughts on Negar: I am
the Yin to her Yang and my British calm
has helped her to become more grounded
in her outlook to life or is it that she is
just exhausted? Who knows!?

SO IT JUST goes to show that vegetables

have been around for ages, and since my
recipe this month uses broad beans, decided to write a bit about that. Broad beans
are not grown here as they are in Britain,
(dont know why, its like elderflower why
cant we grow it here either?!) and a suitable substitute is the fava bean, usually
Italian. I use the ones from Trader Joes, and
usually serve it with a parsley sauce over. I
have used tinned/canned broad beans from
my favourite Brit shop also. According to
Gary Rhodes New British Classics cook
book, broad beans have been around in
the West since the Bronze Age (wonder
how they know that?!) and were often
used dried through the years, especially
for the winter months. Egyptians apparently
loved the vegetable, but the priests at the
time, deemed them to be unsuitable as
they felt the hollow stems were used by
the souls of the dead as a passage way to
life after death charming! At one time
though they were as popular as potatoes
in daily eating.
Any road, this recipe is based on an
older BBC Good Food one, and is super
simple to prep, and a nice summer dish.
Now for something entirely different
I recently was privileged to be chairperson
for a fundraiser tea, for our local Senior
Friendship Centre, benefiting the Caregiver
resource Centre something close to
my heart as I worked as a program nurse
there for six years, and then was able to be
caregiver at home for my Jack. ( he is
now in a nursing home). We did a special
tea, with silent auction and vendors. It is
amazing how popular a tea is, and even
though it usually isnt authentically British,
it is always lovely to see how much people
appreciate dressing up lovely hats and
outfits and enjoying having the niceties
of tea. I so enjoy being involved in helping
to provide this still, however as I get older

with various infirmities, I realise its too

much nowadays, so this will be my last
fundraiser I am proud to know I have
been able to help give back to this wonderful Sarasota community for 30 years!
However to quote Monty Python Im
not dead yet!
So, now onto the recipe, it takes only
about 30 minutes, and is a nice light supper. I like to use only the asparagus heads
with this meal. Creme Fraiche is more
available now in the general supermarket,
and when I find it, I often freeze some, the
texture changes but the flavour is still there.
It is found in the dairy section, sometimes
near the cream cheese, or sour cream, you
may have to ask for it.
Hope you like my version

Smoked Salmon, Broad Bean

And Asparagus Pasta

2 Tbsp butter
5-6- scallions/spring onions, chopped
1/3 cup white wine
1 cup ( 8oz) crme fraiche
1/2 tsp grated nutmeg
2 Tbsp chopped dill ( fresh if available)
1/2 lemon
1 can, or about 1 cups broad beans
1/2 lb young asparagus
1 cups pasta, ziti, curly
or elbow macaroni.
8oz smoked salmon, cut into small
pieces
Melt the butter in a pan, and gently saut
the onions for about one minute, add the
wine, and boil hard to reduce to about
three Tbsp. Lower the heat and stir in the
creme fraiche and the nutmeg, and gently
simmer three-four-minutes or until slightly
thickened. Add the dill and squeeze in the
lemon juice (I also grate a bit of peel with it)
Cook the broad beans if needed. Trim
the asparagus and cut into pieces. Cook
the pasta as directed on the package, and
add the asparagus tips in the last few
minutes of cooking time. Drain well but
reserve some of the pasta water. Toss the
pasta and asparagus with the cooked broad
beans, smoked salmon and sauce, and if
needed to loosen a little add a bit of the
reserved pasta water; serve immediately
(I have actually also had this chilled, just
need to make the sauce a bit thinner) Yield
four servings

Pollsters Confounded By Conservative Victory

AND SO FOR the first time since 1992, the
Conservatives have won a General Election.
But what a win! They didnt actually sweep
the board but they cleaned out all their main
rivals.
It was the BBC exit poll broadcast as
the polling booths closed that gave the first
indications of the political earthquake about to
occur: from a sample of 22,000 voters across
the UK, the Tories were tipped to win 320plus of the 650 seats, with Labour trailing
miles behind on 230 or so, and the Scottish
Nationalists (SNP) becoming the third party
with 55 or more of Scotlands 59 MPs.
All the talk throughout the campaign had
been about minority governments with the
Tories probably having to court the Liberal
Democrats and the Ulster Unionists, while
David Cameron constantly banged on about
Ed Milibands Labour Party being wiped out
north of the border and needing to rely upon
the Scots Nats to run the country.
Of all the campaigning ploys Camerons
endless repetition of the probability of a Labour/SNP coalition was arguably the single
most effective tactic. It emerged as being

one of the things

most English voters
detested, especially
since broadcasts
from Scotland reinforced nationalism in
its most rabid forms.
COLLAPSING
The one thing
most certain was
the collapsing LibDem vote. As the
polls closed, they said farewell to 56 serving
MPs. By the cold light of dawn, that number
had evaporated leaving just eight. It was,
said Nick Clegg, the Liberals worst result
since the party was founded and led to his
immediate resignation.
What was surprising was where his votes
went. Labour was confident of wresting them
back, after all Labour had suffered chiefly
from Liberal success. But no, the votes went
to the Conservatives, their allies a matter of
hours before. The Lib Dems were wiped out
in the West of England all twelve of their
seats falling to the Conservatives. In fact, the

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

HMRC They Want Your

Money (As Well As The IRS!)
A FEW WEEKS ago, in a moment of relative
calm, I was browsing the UK governments
website and I came across Consultations,
where they seek the publics views on various proposals. (Its very easy to reach, the
Consultations button is at the top of the
homepage www.hmrc.gov.uk.)
Not surprisingly, I was looking at the
documents put out by HM Treasury, which
includes the HMRC. Amongst the really
interesting items (Orchestra Tax Relief, The
Specifications of the New One Pound Coin),
I found a document that had been issued
last summer, so the consultation period
ended long ago.
However I thought I should pass this on to
you because it could effect a large number,
possibly even most, of us. I think the title describes plainly what it is about Restricting
non-residents entitlement to the UK personal
allowance.
If youre a UK citizen you currently retain
the entitlement to a UK personal allowance for
your lifetime. This holds true even if youve
taken US citizenship, because the UK has no
trouble with people holding dual citizenship.
The effect of this entitlement is that relatively
small amounts of income from the United
Kingdom are not taxed there simply because
they are less than the personal allowance.
They are not strictly tax-free, since tax would
be payable on them if it were due. The only
reason it isnt due is because the personal
allowance is larger than the income involved.
So if no personal allowance were available to non-residents, every small amount
of pension, rental profit, state pension, etc
could become subject to UK tax. In some
cases, taxpayers could obtain a Residence
Certificate from the IRS to notify the HMRC
that no tax is due in the UK. But this is a
time-consuming process, involving forms to
both tax authorities and the IRS charge $85
for the privilege!
Rental income would become subject to
UK tax, because the first taxing rights are
always with the country where the property is,
in this case the United Kingdom. It would then

be necessary to claim foreign tax credit here.

All those letters sent by the Non-Resident
Landlords Scheme to say that you dont need
to file a UK Tax Return any more will be so
much waste paper!
The personal allowance in the UK has
increased dramatically over the past few
years. In 2006-07 it was 5,035, and its
now in 2015-16, 10,500. That is quite a
leap, particularly compared to the exemption
amount here going up $50 a year! This increase was one of the changes insisted on by
the Liberal Democrats (remember them?) in
order to bring some people completely out of
the charge to tax. And now they think its too
high to be available to us non-resident folks!
Much of the Consultation Paper concerns
people from other countries coming to work
for a short period in the UK, and being
entitled to a personal allowance, whereas
UK residents going to some other countries
for a short-term work period may not get
a similar benefit there. I cannot imagine a
case where an employee is sent overseas
for a few months without the employer
covering in some way any additional tax
liability. Unfortunately, it seems the authors
of the paper have used an example that
could encourage an anti-foreigner knee-jerk
reaction, rather than a well thought through
example. They also imagine that being able
to claim a foreign tax credit will answer all
our problems!
To date, the government havent taken
this proposal any further, or published the
responses to the Consultation Paper. I will
now be keeping an eye open for it, and will
let you know if/when they do!

very last result in St Ives was the final nail in

the yellow coffin as the Tories crushed the
sitting Liberal Democrat.
They also lost everything they had bar
Orkney to the SNP in Scotland, They said
goodbye to another 11 seats to Labour in
London and the North, lossing Vince Cable
and Simon Hughes in the process. It was
defeat on an unparalleled scale from which
it will take three or four general elections to
recover. Ironically it seems as though Tory
tactical voting kept Nick Clegg in a Sheffield

QUIRKINESS
The quirkiness of Britains first-past-the
post system put paid to the hopes of the
United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP)
whose leader, Nigel Farage had vowed to
step down if he didnt win Thanet South in the
eastern tip of Kent. He lost, and duly stepped
down... then his supporters announced that
he was taking time off. Doubtless to return
in time for the UKIP leadership election in the
autumn where he will be the only UKIP person
anyone has ever heard of.
A day or two later, UKIP revealed it had
refused to accept Farages resignation. After
all, if you lose the player in a one-man band,
there is no more music!
In all, UKIP registered 12 percent of the
votes cast, capturing a single seat. But they
came third in scores of seats and were

ASTONISHING
But the story of the night was Scotland.
Here the SNP took 56 of the 59 seats on offer.
An astonishing return since they polled exactly
50 percent of the vote. They would have been
hoping for a share of government with their
performance. As it is, Camerons majority in
the Commons will enable the SNP to repeat
their mantra: that we are ruled by a party none
of us voted for. It is a seductive argument
which will doubtless inform the outcome of the
Scottish Parliament election next year and
could call up yet another Scottish referendum.
Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP leader, is evasive
on the subject but it is noticeable that she
and other SNP politicians endlessly refer to
government by Westminster. Never to the
UK or British government as though they
are governed by a foreign power. In politics,
semantics is everything, and the simpler the
distortion, the harder it is to challenge.
This stunning Conservative victory literally
came out of the blue, a bolt that destroyed
Labour and the Liberals but the vagaries of
the voting system produced an SNP tsunami
north of the border and put the footings down
for the establishment of UKIP as a permanent
third party.

they had come third in four seats and never
before had been runners-up anywhere. They
have laid impressive foundations and seem
just as likely to take working-class votes as
middle-class ones.
SUFFERED
The Labour Party suffered from the late
surge in England where voters seem to have
decided that they didnt want the SNP telling
a British government where its priorities lay.
They made not a single gain in their targeted
marginal constituencies where working-class
votes appear to have defected to UKIP, thus
keeping the Tories in.
This wasnt just the UKIP and SNP threat
as Ed Miliband realised. Even his own supporters were lukewarm in their support for
him. If many lifelong Labour voters could not
see him as Prime Minister, there is little likelihood that floating voters would be irresistibly
attracted to him. He belonged to the generation of MPs on the Blair and Brown eras and
was irrevocably tainted by the invasion of Iraq
and the financial crisis that stained the last
parliament and a half of Labour rule.
So Miliband went, cutting a dignified but
hapless figure in his farewell speech. It is now
to the intake of the 2010 General Election
that Labour has to look. There are several
outstanding women and men who could

Norfolk Chief Constable Simon
Bailey said the referrals were increasing on an almost-daily basis.
He added that revelations about
the scale of abuse by late childrens
entertainer and charity fundraiser
Jimmy Savile no doubt had an
impact on the unprecedented number of allegations.
Britons were horrified to learn
after Saviles death in 2011 that he

had been a serial predator, abusing

children in places including hospitals for decades.
Other well-known figures have
since been investigated for or convicted of using their positions to
get away with abuse.
Home Secretary Theresa May
said it was almost certain more
allegations are to come.
An official inquiry is underway looking into whether British
public agencies had neglected or
covered up abuse allegations from
the 1970s.

Britain Posts First Fall In

Consumer Prices Since 1960
RR By Pan Pylas

BRITAIN SAW consumer prices fall in

April for the first time since 1960, official figures showed last month, but few
economists think the annual drop will be
anything but short-lived.
The Office for National Statistics
said May 19 that consumer prices were
0.1 percent lower than the year before,
mainly weighed down by cheaper air and
sea travel. Lower oil prices likely played
a role in that as did the relatively early
Easter this year.
According to the statistics agency,
Aprils fall was the first decline since
1960. Though consumer price inflation
figures only began to be compiled in the

Scotland Yard Arrests 9 In

Major London Jewel Heist

WITH METICULOUS planning and

remarkable good fortune, the thieves
who broke into a safe deposit in Londons
diamond district seemed to have pulled
off the perfect jewel heist. But their luck
ran out May 18 when more than 200
Scotland Yard officers closed in on them.
The nine arrests were a triumph for
embattled detectives whose early work
had been criticized because of an embarrassing failure to respond to a midnight
alarm at the start of a holiday weekend.
That gave the thieves more than 48
hours to carefully remove the contents
of the safe used by jewelers in the Hatton
Garden district.
The suspects, all British men between
ages 43 and 76, were questioned in a
London police station after coordinated
morning raids in northern London and
the southeastern district of Kent, Scotland Yard said.
It said bags containing a significant
amount of high-value property were
recovered at one of the addresses but did
not assign a value to the heist.
AUDACIOUS
The audacious robbery over the Easter weekend fascinated Britain. Dressed
in fluorescent vests and hard hats, the
thieves entered the high-security vault
area in the London diamond district, carrying bags and wheeled garbage bins for
carrying off the booty.
To gain entry, they climbed down
an elevator shaft and drilled through
concrete walls that were six feet thick,
later making off with the contents of 72
safety deposit boxes.
Commander Peter Spindler last month
defended the police performance in the
face of the earlier criticism.
At times weve been portrayed as
if we have acted like Keystone Cops
but I want to reassure you that in the
finest traditions of Scotland Yard, these
detectives have done their utmost to
bring justice to the victims of this callous

mid-1990s, the agencys number crunchers have used historical information to

calculate rates further back in time.
With oil prices appearing to have
bottomed out over the past few months,
most economists think the country is not
heading for a sustained period of falling
prices, or deflation.
Deflation can be a concern as it can
weigh on economic activity if consumers
put off spending and businesses fail to
invest. Fears of deflation were largely
behind the European Central Banks
decision this year to launch a 1.1 trillioneuro ($1.2 trillion) monetary stimulus.
EFFECTS
Samuel Tombs, senior UK economist
at Capital Economics, thinks the UKs
drop in consumer prices will only last
a month as Easter-related effects turn
positive, though it could take another
couple of years before inflation returns
to the Bank of Englands two percent
target.
The Banks governor, Mark Carney,
has been sanguine about the recent low
rates of inflation and has noted that it can
have a positive effect as wages increase
faster than consumer prices.
Alongside falling unemployment,
low prices, especially for fuel, have
boosted consumer spending, which is
consequently providing the main thrust
to economic growth at the moment,
said Chris Williamson, chief economist
at financial information company Markit.

Given the rosy growth backdrop,

most economists think that the Bank of
England will start raising interest rates
sometime in 2016, having kept its main
rate on hold at the record low of 0.5
percent since March 2009.

Airbus: Would
Reconsider
Investment If
UK Leaves EU
THE HEAD of the UK arm of Airbus has
warned the aerospace company would
reconsider its investments in Britain
should the country vote to leave the
European Union.
Paul Kahn has joined several prominent
business leaders in expressing concern
about the promised referendum on EU
membership. Prime Minister David Cameron has vowed to hold such a vote by the
end of 2017 after he has tried to negotiate reforms with the 28-member bloc.
Business leaders are starting to make
their views known, mindful of consequences that a so-called Brexit would
bring.
Kahn says that should Britain vote to
leave, Airbus would reconsider future
investment if business conditions were
more favorable in other parts of Europe.
Airbus also has European operations
in France, Germany and Spain.

That always affects me, from my early days in
Torquay, Devonshire I owned this coffee bar/

Then nip down to the Olde Ship in Santa

Naturalization And How To Get It

So what happens at a naturalization

interview? You will be asked questions from
your application and background and you
will be given an English and Civics test. The
English test includes a reading, writing, and
speaking test. The civics portion tests your
knowledge of US history and government;
all 100 potential questions are available for
study before the test.
The general process to become naturalized:
1. Complete Form N-400, Application for
Naturalization and submit to USICS along
with supporting documents, photographs,
and application fee.
2. In a few weeks, you will receive a receipt
notice acknowledging receipt of your application. This will include a receipt number that
identifies your application.
3. In another few weeks, you will receive
a letter from the USCIS for a biometrics appointment. This is for fingerprinting.
4. Go to the fingerprint location and get
your prints taken.
5. You will receive a notice for your naturalization interview and tests. You may also
receive a notice asking you to bring items
such as your drivers license and tax returns
to the interview.
6. On the day of the interview, you will go
to your local office at the specified time for
the interview and tests.
7. Once you pass the interview and test,
you will receive a notice with a ceremony
date.
8. Go to the ceremony on the given date
and take the oath of allegiance.
9. Why is it important to get naturalized?
If you have your permanent residency (green
card), you may think that there is no need
to become naturalized. Whether you just
recently got your green card or have been
a green card holder for many years, getting
your citizenship has many advantages. Some

Get Back Parthenon Marbles
RR By Derek Gatopoulos

ADVOCACY groups seeking to get the

British Museum to return the Parthenon
Marbles to Athens expressed disappointment last month after Greeces culture
minister said he would not launch a court
challenge for the famous collection.
The sculptures, which for more than
2,000 years decorated the Parthenon

removed more than two centuries ago by
Lord Elgin, a Scottish nobleman, and are
on display at the London museum.
Culture Minister Nikos Xydakis last
month said Athens would not seek court
action against the museum but preferred
a diplomatic route.
Dennis Menos of the International

a political one for (Greece). You cannot
go to court for every issue. And in inter
national court, the outcome is always
uncertain. Things are not that simple.

WHAT IS naturalization in the United States?

Naturalization is the legal process through
which a foreign national becomes a United
States citizen. This is the goal of most immigrants coming to the United States and
the day an immigrant becomes a naturalized
citizen is a day of great celebration. So how
can you become a naturalized citizen? A
person must be qualified to apply for citizenship. The most common ways that you can
be eligible to apply for naturalization are if
you have been a permanent resident (green
card holder) for at least five years, you have
been a permanent resident for three years
or more and are the spouse of a US citizen.
You can also be eligible through other ways
such as if a person has qualifying service
in the US armed forces but these are much
less common.
The US Citizenship and Immigration
Services (USCIS) states that applicants for
naturalization must be at least eighteen years
old, be a lawful permanent resident of the
United States, be a resident and physically
present in the United States for at least five
(or three) years at the time of application
and be of good moral character. If you left
the US for six months or more during the
five year period, you have to make up for the
time because you disrupted the permanent
resident status. How does USCIS determine
good moral character? They do this by looking at your criminal record and seeing if you
have ever lied to USCIS. Some things can
prevent you from becoming naturalized or
may require you to wait longer. These include
having been convicted of a crime, being absent from the US for long periods, especially
periods over one year, failing to file income
taxes, or owing child support. Most traffic
fines and minor incidents will not disqualify
you. USCIS will look at the last five years to
determine good moral character, but they
may go beyond that period in certain cases.

IMMIGRATION

zen include being able to vote in US elections,

avoid getting removed from the country, having a broad range of work opportunities, the
right to full social security benefits, being able
to sponsor family members for permanent
residency, the right to serve on a jury, and
having no restrictions on the time you spend
outside the US.
Despite all of the advantages of becoming a US citizen, you may have hesitations
because you may lose citizenship in your
home country. Some countries allow dual
citizenship while others may revoke your
citizenship if you become a US citizen. The
decision to become a US is one of the most
important decisions in your life. If you decide
to do it, you will be showing your commitment to the United States and have the right
to full protection under the US constitution.

BEING IMMERSED around the clock in

business and social dealings with the
expat British community in Florida I observe
firsthand how uninformed many longtime
residents are. On the subject of medical
costs, I still hear If I get sick Im just going
back to the UK for free treatment. First they
should say when not if since everybody
eventually gets sick. So reading three weeks
ago in the Expat Telegraph an article called
Expats Outside Europe Must Pay To Use
The NHS I thought it timely to address this.
The final words of the article concluded
Times are changing and if youre not a
UK pensioner you can no longer just nip
back to the UK for free healthcare when
it suits you. This is a part of the British
Governments ongoing austerity measures
which came into effect April 6, 2015, aiming
to save the NHS 500m a year. Patients
should expect to be asked questions about
their resident status in the UK. To save
you research time fellow expats, I clicked
around the labyrinthine NHS website and
ploughed through its bazillion pages to
find the one YOU want: www.nhs.uk/chq.

n BRIT FLOYDS SPACE AND Time
World Tour Comes to Florida. This British
band is considered be the worlds greatest
Pink Floyd Show. This is their most ambitious show to date, with a spectacular new
light show and even bigger stage production, an amazing journey through five
decades of Pink Floyd, from their creation in
1965 to the release of their new album, The
Endless River. This includes performances
from The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish
You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and
The Division Bell plus a host of other Pink
Floyd musical surprises. Paying attention
to every musical detail, Brit Floyd faithfully
recreates the true live Pink Floyd concert
experience, to create a performance as

sonically perfect as it is visually awesome,

says the press blurb. At Miami Beachs
Fillmore Theatre on Thursday, July 16.

n SOCCER could be your
business in the USA! About
seven years ago, Scotsman
Alan Georgeson, now a downtown Miami resident, partnered with his
son Scott to set up soccer training camps
in South Florida where the interest in the
sport from local Brits and Americans is
huge. Soccer 5 USA (see www.soccer5usa.
com) was started in Boca Raton. As its
hardly a mecca for Footie, they wisely
moved operations down to Miami, glowing
with the likes of visiting England teams and
David Beckham visits. (Golden Boy was just
in town again May 23 for further talks on
his longed-for Miami stadium). Soccer 5
USA has built and operates several soccer
fields and is now looking for participants
and franchisees. See ad on back Soccer
page this issue.
n FLORIDA FACT The amount of international freight moving through Florida,
via Miami International Airport, topped all
50 states for 2014, with over one million
tons. The value of international freight was
over $61.5bn and highlighted the airports
lead in international commerce. Hey, Florida
is not just beaches and glamour, People.

n LONGTIME BRITISH favorites Def
Leppard with Styx and Tesla, with 100

used to the mammoth portions served in
American restaurants and the resultant
doggy bag habit. Yet I recall quite an effort
to persuade my visiting mother to leave with
leftovers whenever we ate out in Miami.
Mum thats what Americans do, I insisted.
Nobody here is going to think youre being
lowclass. Besides, why waste good food?
So there is now a campaign afoot in the UK
to convert the British to this practice, writes
a columnist in the Miami Herald, because
the BBC reports 21 tons of food wasted per
UK restaurant per year. About the weight of
three double-decker London buses noted
the American writer! This is all apparently
because the British are too embarrassed to
ask for a take-home box. Considering how
stingy we are it must be that or snobbiness.
Since leftovers are always more flavourful
the second day anyway, it is one sensible
American habit we should adopt pronto.

has opened a second location
in Pompano Beach. Phone the Kings Head

to offer a thirsty Union Jack reader. The
owner Jeff is American and the pub opened

far for me to drive. So pop in and peruse
for your own verdict. (Note: I was a guest
at the Grand Opening of the first Kings

British pubgrub on the menu and was a

from Washington, DC, died after his armored vehicle struck a bomb on Sept. 27,
2007. Four other soldiers were injured.
He was arrested years later after FBI
investigators found his fingerprints on
some of the devices. Prosecutors said he
was a highly dangerous man working
with murderous intent against coalition
forces.
Sardar, a former London taxi driver,
was believed to be the first person to be
convicted in a British court for fighting
in the Iraqi insurgency.
He was convicted of murder and conspiracy to murder. He had denied all the
charges against him, and told the court he
became involved in the Iraqi insurgency
to protect his fellow Sunni Muslims from
Shia militias. He said American soldiers
had not been his targets.
But Justice Henry Globe dismissed
that and said Sardar had a mindset that
made Americans every bit the enemy as
Shia militias. Sardar was to life with a
minimum term of 38 years.

OBITUARIES

Crime And Mystery

Writer Ruth Rendell

RUTH RENDELL, 85, prolific crime and

mystery writer, perhaps best known for
her Chief Inspector Wexford novels, died
last month. She was 85.
The cause of death was not announced, but Rendell had suffered a
serious stroke in
January.
She was one
of Britains most
popular crime novelists and authored
dozens of books,
including many written under the pen
name Barbara Vine.
Rendell was a member of the House of
Lords who had received wide recognition
and many awards throughout her long
career. Her Inspector Wexford series was
made into a popular TV series, winning
her many new fans and accolades.
She began her literary efforts by writing some very bad novels that were
never published, she told The Associated
Press in a 2005 interview.
Once she found her way, Rendell
produced novels at an astonishing pace
more than 60 books over four decades,
including 20 featuring Chief Inspector
Wexford.
Rendell lived in recent years in the

surroundings did not alter her hard-eyed
view of human nature.
I dont think the world is a particularly pleasant place, said Rendell. It
is, of course, for some people. But it is
a hard place, and I dont think its being
cynical to say that.
She spent many afternoons attending
sessions in Parliament after she had
finished her morning writing sessions.
Her official title was Baroness Rendell

Rendell told The Independent newspaper in 2014 that her personal hero was
South African Bishop Desmond Tutu
because hes such a good man and hes
had a hard life and always looks so happy.
The same year, she told an audience
at the Cheltenham Literary Festival
that she shied away from writing about

it might in some way show criminals
how to do it.
I would rather not be involved, rather
not be responsible, she said.

The Cockney Lad

And Jim Crow
By John Sharer

SMASHING BOOK! I can relate to this book

on so many levels. Having grown up on the
west coast and now living in the South I can
tell you that this is very recent history and, in
many ways, things have not changed much
at all. There is hope and much improvement
in some areas but almost none in others.
Peter Mason begins his life in London,
his early teen years were spent watching
and listening to the buzz bombs and V-2
rockets, completely wiping out a block of
134 flats where his best school chum lived,
all the while wondering if he was going to
be the next one to
be killed. Although
his family survived
the war physically
at least his Mum
did not survive it
mentally. Peters Dad
returned home from
army service abroad
to a once vital, attractive and healthy
woman to someone
who, although only 44, looked much older.
Her nerves were shredded by the constant
noise and struggles. His Dad finally left and
Peter and his sister were left to care for their
mum. The doctors couldnt figure it out at
the time and put it down to something thats
going around. She passed away a short
time later. Peter was 17 and decided it was
time to move on. As the book opens Peter
is at Southampton, wearing a Savile Row
suit albeit one that had been made for a
300lb man and never picked up so his uncle
had it tailored (not very well) for Peter. He is
standing on the dock watching all the lovely
people disembark while awaiting his turn to
sail. Beth, his sister, hadnt come with him
to see him off, Peter had urged her not to
she couldnt afford the fare from London,
nor miss the time off work. In actuality he
wasnt sure he could bear to say goodbye in
front of everyone he knew he would cry if
she were there.
The voyage is uneventful, Peter makes
some friends with some Americans, they
love his accent and are all curious as to why
hes heading to the States. One boy, Chuck,
tells Peter hes a Rhodes scholar. Peter asks
why he would come to England to study
roads. Chuck doesnt make fun of him and
they turn out to be friends. Peter has a good
heart and trusts people, he treats everyone
the same and that doesnt serve him well
later. Peter learns about American words,
American football and, all in all, the guys

take care of him. At the end of the voyage

Chuck gives him some money along with his
phone number and address and makes Peter
promise to keep in touch. Peter spends a
week in New York where he meets some very
interesting people and decides its time to go.
Hes heading to Jackson, Mississippi. On the
bus he sits next to a black man Solomon
Broward who is also going to Jackson to
visit his children and grand children. Solomon
had been in England during the war so they
had something to talk about. They told each
other about their families and lives. Peter
asked him about how the blacks are treated
and all Solomon would say is that he would
let Peter form his own opinions. While at one
of the stops a lady got on and asked Solomon
to move so she could sit down. He didnt want
to but did. The lady then said asked Peter to
move over to the inside he refused and
she said she understood why he wouldnt
want to sit in that seat, he bluntly told her it
had nothing to do with who had been sitting
there before. This was his first, but certainly
not last, encounter with racism.
Peter arrives in Jackson and finds a hostel
to stay in. He gets a job and makes a few
friends. While there he finds himself smack in
the middle of blacks vs whites. He witnesses
a hit and run and the pedestrian is killed. What
follows during the subsequent investigations
and trial will amaze some readers, this wasnt
long ago. Peter also meets and becomes
quite close to one of his hostel-mates families, as well as Solomon Browards family.
There are two girls involved I wont go into
more detail.
There is a hanging, a severe beating,
lies, payoffs, threats, persecution as well
as love, people who care and want to see
the right thing happen. Peter makes his own
inroads into race relations and tries to make
a difference. He discovers that even people
whom youve worked with for a long time and
thought were your friends will draw the line
quickly when it comes to race. He also finds
that sometimes you have to back off in order
to protect the ones you care about.
At the end of the trial, which seems to
have taken forever, Peter decides its time
to go back to England. Its certainly been an
adventure and eye opening but its time. His
sister is waiting for him and life is going to be
good. There are still challenges to overcome
but he doesnt give up.
There are many ups and downs that Ive
left out again, some people will find it distressing but others wont be surprised. The
ending may surprise some but I think it was
absolutely the right decision.
I know it isnt a true story but in many
respects it is a true analogy of the way things
were, and in some places, still are. I remember being in England over the years on visits
see mixed race couples and it seemed it was
much more accepted there than it was here
even on the West Coast where everyone was
supposed to be open.
Dont miss this one it is a super read I
devoured it in three days. I havent read his
first book but look forward to picking it up.
Summer has just about arrived here in Savannah and itll be time to head to the beach with
another book soon!

Ex-UK Tabloid Editor Coulson In Perjury Trial

FORMER UK tabloid editor Andy
Coulson has gone on trial in Scotland
accused of perjury.
Coulson is charged with lying under
oath in the 2010 trial against former
Scottish lawmaker Tommy Sheridan.
He denied the allegations in court last
month, pleading not guilty.
The 47-year-old Coulson edited the
now-defunct, Rupert Murdoch-owned
News of the World tabloid between 2003
and 2007. He is accused of lying about
his knowledge of the tabloids practice
of eavesdropping on the voicemail messages of celebrities, politicians, athletes
and others in the public eye.
Coulson is a former communications

chief for Prime Minister David Cameron.

The trial in Scotland is expected to last
several weeks.

Royal Navy, Police

Seek Submariner
Who Gave Safety
Warning
MILITARY AND CIVILIAN police
are trying to locate a Royal Navy
submariner who went missing
after warning about lax safety and
security procedures in Britains
nuclear fleet.
Able Seaman William McNeilly
last month released an 18-page
report via the WikiLeaks website
filled with numerous allegations
about safety and security problems in Britains nuclear fleet.
He said the aging Trident nuclear weapons program is a disaster
waiting to happen.
The Navy has rebutted McNeillys claims, saying the Trident
fleet operates under the most
stringent safety regime.
It says it is concerned about
McNeillys wellbeing and will
investigate both the unauthorized
release of the documents and its
contents.
The BBC said that McNeilly
had indicated he would soon turn
himself in.

Van Gaal: United Signed Depay
From Under Noses Of PSG

MAN UNITED manager Louis van Gaal says

he was forced to personally intervene to
clinch the signing of Memphis Depay to
prevent the Netherlands winger from signing
for Paris Saint-Germain.
United said last month it reached a deal
to sign Depay from PSV Eindhoven, with the
move set to go through once the transfer
window opens in June.
Van Gaal said he didnt want to sign D epay
until the end of the season, but pushed
through the deal for the player sooner than
planned.
Van Gaal says because of the market, I
have to handle (the transfer) because otherwise he had signed for Paris Saint-Germain.

Mane Scores Fastest Premier

League Hat Trick

SADIO MANE scored the fastest hat trick in

Premier League history last month, grabbing
goals in the 13th, 14th and 16th minutes to
put Southampton 3-0 ahead against visiting
Aston Villa.
The Senegal midfielders hat trick was
timed at two minutes, 56 seconds at St
Marys Stadium.
Mane converted the rebound after Villa
goalkeeper Shay Given saved his initial shot
to give Southampton the lead after 12:22. He
scored again on 13:46 before saving his best
for last by curling Shane Longs pass on the

Rodgers Opens Door For

Gerrard Return To Liverpool

LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers has

opened the door for Steven Gerrard to return
to the club in a coaching capacity, saying
his departing captain would certainly be
someone Id love to have work here.
Gerrard is leaving Liverpool as the season

join the Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS. He
is already taking his UEFA coaching badges
and has suggested he would like to return to
the club after he retires.
Rodgers says he has spoken to Gerrard
about his future and says Steven leaving
here isnt permanent, certainly as long as
Im here.

George Norths Concussion

Still A Worry

GEORGE NORTH, the outstanding young

Welsh winger, was suffering more than
somewhat as the season drew to a close.
He was sidelined for more than a month following repeated concussion injuries. He was
first concussed playing for Wales against
New Zealand in the 2014 November Tests.
He was then struck twice on the head while
playing against England in the Six Nations.
After that he got two more heavy blows to
the head in club games.
Warren Gatland, the Welsh coach, is
beginning to be really concerned that he
may not recover in time to be fully match-fit
for the World Cup. Jim Mallinder, Norths
coach at the reigning English champions
Northampton, has accused Gatland of being
unnecessarily partisan,
Hes looking after Wales and himself.
George is our No 1 priority. Were not interested in Wales (but) the players safety.
We wont make any decisions until things
are right.

Englands Selection
Problems Ease

Similar worries have been darkening the

skies over Englands fullback, Mike Brown,
who has been out since being concussed in
the Fenruary game against Italy. But the sun
has come out for him and he will now be fit
to make the 45-man England squad.
Another fullback Nick Abendanon is
currently hors de combat since he is playing in France. He is widely believed to be
the best fullback in Europe but unavailable

for selection because of being domiciled

in France. Ultimately it is down to England
coach Stuart Lancaster whether or not to pick
him and Steffon Armitage (also lost across
the Channel).
Watch out for Sam Burgess, a one-time
League international now settling down to
work in Bath where he plays regularly as a
back-row forward. He shows every sign of
getting in to the English World Cup squad.
Except that Lancaster believes he will make
a Test-class centre. Sam himself doesnt
mind. As befits a convert, hell play anywhere
any time
Its hard to understand why Lancaster is
so keen to see Burgess in the centre since
England are well-supplied with some gifted
lads. The latest of them is Jonathan Joseph
who scored four scintillating tries in the Six
Nations. He has just been crowned Players
Player of the Year and England Player of the
Year at the annual Rugby Players Association awards.

Aussies Relax Rules

The Australians have now relaxed their

ban on selecting Aussies playing abroad.
The ARU has announced that anyone with
more than 60 caps now qualifies to play for
the home country, wherever they ply their
trade. This will enable men like Matt Giteau
along with Drew Mitchell and George Smith
to return to the Wallabies. It may seem a bit
hard on chaps who have opted to ignore foreign money and stay loyal to their homeland
but after all rugby is a professional game. If
youre making a living, wouldnt you naturally
go to the peope who will pay you best?

Ireland To Host 2017

Womens World Cup

Ireland have long-term hopes of staging

the World Cup for the first time in 2023.
Their cause will have been done no harm at
all since they have been chosen to host the
Womens World Cup in 2017. The tournaments pool games and final will be contested
in Dublin, with Belfast getting the semi-finals
and play-offs.

He has played for Scotland 66 times.

Sinclair Completes Permanent

Move To Villa From Man City

SCOTT SINCLAIR has completed his permanent move to Aston Villa from Manchester
City on a four-year deal after a successful
loan spell.
The 26-year-old winger his revived his
career at Villa since joining in January, scoring three goals and being a regular member
of the first team before getting injured.
The transfer fee was not disclosed when
the move was announced last month, and
Sinclair says this is the happiest I have been
in a long time.
Sinclair, who played for Britain in the
Olympic football tournament at the London
Games in 2012, signed for City for 6.2m
from Swansea that year but struggled for
game time.

with a mindboggling 21 under 267. He let the
field know he was in devastating form with
a scintillating 11 under 61, during the third
round, which put him top of the scoreboard
and in the driving seat. He finished seven
strokes clear of the field. Same weekend in
Barcelona, Englands James Morrison captured the Spanish Open by four strokes with
a 10 under 278. The 30-year-old Guildford

its his second European tour victory.

Texas Hosts Fighting Brits

Two Britons were in action at Hildalgo,

Texas, May 9, one won, one lost. Scotlands
Ricky Burns (37-5-1) the former WBO lightweight champion did not have things his way
against the unbeaten Texan, Omar Figueroa.
In a bout with plenty of inside punching.
Burns was penalized points in two rounds
for holding, while Figueroa who struggled
to make the weight, claimed a unanimous
decision to go 26 and 0. Doncasters Jamie
McDonnell (26-2-1) kept his WBA bantamweight crown taming the unbeaten Japanese
fighter, Tomoki Kameda (31-1) with a
unanimous decision. The Yorkshireman was
on the canvas in the third round, but got up
and back into a very physical encounter.
Same weekend in Birmingham, Olympic
super-heavyweight gold medalist Anthony

Joshua, went 12 wins,12 knockouts, as he

demolished the Brazilian, Raphael Zumbano
Love (36-11) in the second round Nottinghams super-middleweight champion Carl
Froch, (33-2) relinquished his IBF crown in
February, while last month the WBA stripped
him of his world title, for the reason he had
not defended it for over a year.
The so-called fight of the century in
Las Vegas, between welterweights Floyd
Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao (57-62) May 4, showed Mayweathers technical
skills ease him to a unanimous decision over
the Filipino and his 48th consecutive victory.
Mayweather now holds the WBC, WBA, WBO
and IBO crowns

Formula One & Rugby

The Mercedes team took one and two

places in the Spanish Grand Prix, May 10,
where Nico Rosberg led from start to finish. Team-mate and world champion Lewis
Hamilton, got stuck behind Ferraris Sebastian Vettel, and it was not until the 40th lap
when Vettel took a pit-stop that Hamilton took
advantage. He stayed in front for a second
place finish with Vettel third
The big European Rugby Union Cup finals
concluded May 2-3, with Gloucester beating
Edinburgh 19-13 in the European Challenge
Cup final. Toulon are the new European
club champions after winning 24-18 over
Clermont Auvergne. Both French sides
fielded an Englishman, Steffon Armitage for
Toulon and Nick Abendanon for Auvergne.
Both matches played at Twickenham On
the domestic agenda, Heriots are the Scottish champions. Pontypridd won the Welsh

Lampard Eager To Duel Former England

Mate, LA Galaxy Star Steven Gerrard
FRANK LAMPARD has faced off against
Steven Gerrard many times over their long
and fruitful careers in the English Premier
League, but Lampard has eagerly marked
the date of their next meeting on his calendar all the same.
Thats because it wont take place in
England, but halfway around the world
at StubHub Center in Carson, California
where theyll do battle for the first time
with their new clubs, New York City FC
and the LA Galaxy.
August 23! Its at their place, Lampard told ESPNFC.
Lampard and Gerrard join a steady
procession of international heavyweights
making the move to MLS in recent years, a
development Lampard expects will continue.

For his part, Lampard said he considers

himself very fortunate to have had the
twofold opportunity
to contribute to Man
Citys season and start
his new chapter in the
United States.
At 36, I got asked to come to the
champions and a club with this pedigree. I
am delighted that happened as it has done,
and I am delighted about the future and the
opportunity to go and play in New York,
try and make the best of it, individually
try to help there but also be part of a new
football club in one of the best cities in the
world. I am fortunate.

Leeds Hires Rosler As Its 5th Manager Of The Season

FORMER English power Leeds has
hired its fifth manager of the season,
with former Manchester City striker
Uwe Rosler taking on one of the most
challenging jobs in the game.
The eccentric owner of the secondtier club, Italian businessman Massimo
Cellino, turned to Rosler after branding previous manager Neil Redfearn as
weak and a baby.
Since buying a controlling stake of
the northern club in April 2014, Cellino

has lived up to his nickname of manager-eater by firing three coaches and

allowing Redfearns contract to elapse.
Cellino recently served a ban by the
English league for a tax conviction.
Leeds was the biggest team in England in the late 1960s and early 70s
and a Champions League semifinalist
in 2002 before running into financial
problems.
Rosler was fired by second-tier club
Wigan in November.

American Pharoah Shows

His Talent

Trainer Bob Baffert claimed his fourth

Kentucky Derby winner, May 2, when American Pharoah (5-2f) beat Firing Line (12-1)

win the Preakness Stakes, the second leg
of the triple crown, by an astonishing seven

head as race goers rushed for shelter as
the eight runners left the starting gate. The

Pharoah was in stall one on the rails, usually

considered a distinct disadvantage, but not
for this horse. The Belmont Stakes runs June

First Test at Lords, to claim a 124 run victory.
England 389 and 478 (Alistair Cook 162).
New Zealand 523 and 220.
After five games in the County Championship, mid-May, Middlesex lead the table with

won three too, and are chasing with 71pts.
Lancashire top Division Two with 87pts, also
after three victories, with Gloucestershire

Late Sport, The Play-Offs

James DeGale, took a unanimous decision over Andre Dirrel (24-2) in Boston,
May 24, to claim the vacant IBF supermiddleweight crown. The Londoner had the
American down in the second round, and
though things went a bit quiet for a time,
DeGale (21-1) captured the final two rounds
that gave him the decision. DeGale became
the first Briton, to win an Olympic Gold medal
and a pro-World Championship.
Norwich won the big money match
against fellow Championship side Middlesbrough 2-0 at Wembley. The Canaries will
now be back in the Premiership next season.
Preston North End will play in the Championship next season, after beating Swindon

Division Two play-off final end 1-1 between
Southend Utd and Wycombe Wanderers,
but the Shrimpers moved up a division after

opportunity, and then visited Miami, where
David Beckhams MLS franchise appears to

Champions Chelsea End Five-Year Drought

THE FIVE-YEAR drought is over.
Chelsea is Premier League champion
again with three games to spare.
Chelseas players danced around the
field after securing the title with a scrappy 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace May
10 that encapsulated the recent cautious
pragmatism of Jose Mourinhos team.
Today was not a game to enjoy,
Mourinho said. Today was the game to
finish the job.
But it was a trophy that was really won
in the opening months of the season, with

Chelsea having been atop the standings

from the opening weekend. With only
two losses in 35 games, Chelsea was
rarely troubled in its pursuit of a fourth
league title in 11 seasons and the fifth
in its 110-year history.
Fittingly, the title-winning goal came
from Eden Hazard, a week after the
Belgium wingers dynamic, individual displays were honored by his fellow professionals with the player of the year award.
Although Hazards uncharacteristically weak penalty kick was saved by

JFK Inspiring Englands Attempt

To End World Cup Quest
ENGLISH SOCCER leaders are drawing
inspiration from former US President John
F Kennedys challenge to send a man to the
moon as the country tries to end its World
Cup title drought.
Martin Glenn, a former food company
executive, started work last month as chief
executive of the Football Association and
has made winning the 2022 World Cup a
majority priority.
The awkward thing about World Cups
is that a lot of other teams want to win it as
well but I really support that goal, Glenn said
on the FA website. When John F Kennedy
said (in 1961) he wanted to put a man on
the moon by 1970, everyone thought he was
bonkers. But he put NASA in place and gave
them funding.
There were no guarantees but everyone,
including the janitor, knew that the aim was to

get a man on the moon

by 1970 and they did it
by the end of the decade.
Winning the World Cup
in 2022 is not a pie-inthe-sky hope.
Englands only World
Cup success came on
home soil in 1966. The country has also
failed to win the hosting rights to the FIFA
tournament since.
The English FA isnt that popular around
the world of international football, Glenn
said. Lets work at that, not for popularitys sake but that our regard would grow
because people would see the immense
change that we are wielding to make sure
the FA is a progressive organization, and
the immense changes that we can make in
English football.

Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni at the

end of the first half, the Belgian headed
in the rebound for his 14th league goal
of the season.
The victory was enough to establish
an insurmountable 13-point lead and
dethrone Manchester City, which has
now failed in both its title defenses since
2012 despite heavy investment from its
Abu Dhabi ownership. Chelsea finished
the season eight points ahead of second
place City, and twelve points in front of
Arsenal in third place.

Jimmy Greaves
Improving After Severe
Stroke, Says Agent

THE AGENT of Jimmy Greaves says the

health of the former
England striker is
improving following
a severe stroke.
Greaves remains
in hospital after suffering the stroke on

May 3.
Greaves agent, Terry Baker, posted
a statement on his clients Facebook
page last month, saying its a long hard
road ahead but there is room for cautious
optimism.
In a message to well-wishers, Baker
says Greaves and his family want to
convey how much it means . that there
have been hundreds of cards and gifts
and flowers and many many thousands
of messages of goodwill on social media.
With 44 goals in 57 international
matches, Greaves is Englands fourthhighest scorer and was part of the 1966
World Cup-winning squad.

FIFA Officials Arrested On

Corruption Charges In Dawn Raid;
Face Extradition To US
RR By Graham Dunbar

ZURICH (AP) Swiss prosecutors opened criminal proceedings into FIFAs awarding of the 2018 and 2022
World Cups, only hours after
seven soccer officials were
arrested May 27 ending extradition to the US in a separate
probe of rampant, systemic,
and deep-rooted corruption.

FIFA, meanwhile, said the May 29

presidential election would go ahead as
planned with Sepp Blatter going for a fifth
term. Blatter was not named in either
investigation.
FIFA also ruled out a revote of the
World Cups won by Russia in 2018 and
Qatar in 2022.
The Swiss prosecutors office said in
a statement they seized electronic data
and documents at FIFAs headquarters
as part of their probe. And Swiss police
said they will question 10 FIFA executive
committee members who took part in
the World Cup votes in December 2010.
The Swiss investigation against persons unknown on suspicion of criminal
mismanagement and of money laundering again throws into the doubt the
integrity of the voting.
FIFA is fully cooperating with the
investigation and is supporting the collection of evidence in this regard, FIFA
said in a statement.
The Swiss announcement came only
hours after 14 people were indicted in the
US for corruption. Seven of them were
arrested and detained by Swiss police at
the request of US authorities after a raid
at a luxury hotel in Zurich.
The US Department of Justice said
in a statement that two current FIFA
vice presidents were among those arrested and indicted, Jeffrey Webb of the
Cayman Islands and Eugenio Figueredo
of Uruguay. The others are Eduardo Li
of Costa Rica, Julio Rocha of Nicaragua,
Costas Takkas of Britain, Rafael Esquivel
of Venezuela and Jose Maria Marin of
Brazil.
All seven are connected with the regional confederations of North and South
America and face up to 20 years in prison
if convicted.
The indictment alleges corruption
that is rampant, systemic, and deep-

rooted both abroad and here in the United
States, Attorney General Loretta E
Lynch said in the statement. It spans at
least two generations of soccer officials
who, as alleged, have abused their positions of trust to acquire millions of dollars
in bribes and kickbacks.
Nine of the 14 that were indicted by
the Justice Department are soccer officials, while four are sports marketing
executives and another works in broadcasting. Jack Warner, a former FIFA vice
president from Trinidad and Tobago, was
among those indicted.
The Swiss prosecutors office said
the US probe was separate from its
investigation but that authorities were
working together.
The US case involves bribes totaling
more than $100m linked to commercial
deals dating back to the 1990s for soccer
tournaments in the United States and
Latin America, the Swiss Federal Office
of Justice said. The Justice Department
said the corruption is linked to World
Cup qualifying matches and the Copa
America South Americas continental
championship.
Dozens of soccer officials are in Switzerland for the FIFA congress and presidential election, where Blatter is widely
expected to win re-election at the helm
of the governing body of world soccer.
Blatter had been scheduled to attend a
meeting of the Confederation of African
Football in a different downtown Zurich
hotel, but he canceled his appearance.
Blatters only opponent in the presidential election, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein
of Jordan, said it was a sad day for football, but declined to comment further.
The arrests were made at the lakeside

Baur au Lac Hotel in downtown Zurich,

long favored as a place for senior FIFA
officials to stay. It was the stage for
intense lobbying for votes ahead of the
2018 and 2022 World Cup hosting decisions in December 2010.
In Florida, a small group of agents
from the FBI and IRS executed search
warrants at CONCACAF headquarters
in Miami Beach.
Neither agency offered comment on
the investigation.
The North American regional body,
known as CONCACAF, reported itself to
US tax authorities in 2012. Then based in
New York, the organization had not paid
taxes over several years when its president was Warner and secretary general
was Chuck Blazer of the United States.
Warner left soccer in 2011 to avoid
FIFA sanctions in a bribery scandal
during that years presidential election.
Blazer left in 2013 and has pleaded guilty
to charges, the Justice Department said
in Wednesdays statement.
Warners successor as CONCACAF
leader and FIFA vice president is Webb,
who was staying at the Baur au Lac this
week.
The Swiss Federal Office of Justice
said in its statement that US authorities
suspect the arrested officials of having
received or paid bribes totaling millions
of dollars and that the crimes were
agreed to and prepared in the US, and
payments carried out via US banks.
The bribery suspects representatives of sports media and sports promotion firms are alleged to have been
involved in schemes to make payments
to the soccer functionaries (FIFA delegates) and other functionaries of FIFA
sub-organizations totaling more than
$100m, the FOJ statement said.
A statement in German added that
the probe involved tournaments in the
United States.
International media gathered at the
street entrance of the Baur au Lac in
scenes reminiscent of the World Cup
votes won by Russia and Qatar more
than four years ago.
Then, former President Bill Clinton
was inside meeting FIFA voters who
later rejected the American bid in favor
of Qatar, and Britains Prince William
was part of the losing English bid team.
Suspicions of vote-buying and wrongdoing in those bidding contests have
dogged FIFA ever since.

Hull Manager In Shock At Players Failed Drugs Test

HULL MANAGER Steve Bruce said he
was shocked, saddened, disappointed
and angry after his midfielder Jake
Livermore failed a drugs test.
The 25-year-old Livermore, who
played once for England in 2012, was
suspended by the English Football Association and Hull May 15. He faces a
ban of up to two years.
Bruce broke the news to Livermore of
the failed test two days before, and said
his player is obviously in a dark place.
I cant come to terms with it, if Im
being honest, Bruce said. The conversation I had with him is the hardest

conversation Ive ever had with any

footballer.
Livermore has been a regular starter
for Hull since joining from Tottenham,
initially on loan, at the start of last
season.
TRACES
Later the same day, two other English
clubs announced their players had failed
drugs tests.
Third-tier club Sheffield United said
Jose Baxter was found to have traces of
a banned substance in his sample after an
out-of-competition drugs test.
United said it temporarily suspended

Baxter, and the 23-year-old midfielder

has informed the club that he engaged
in no wrongdoing involving any banned
substance.
Baxter began his career at Everton.
Later, Wolverhampton Wanderers
said goalkeeper Aaron McCarey had
failed an out-of-competition test for a
non-performance-enhancing substance.
The club said McCarey strenuously
denies deliberately taking any banned
substance and that he is subject to an
immediate ban from the sport while
the Football Association investigates
his case.

Strauss: Pietersen Wont Play For England This Summer

RR By Jack Bezants

SO DEEP was the distrust of Kevin

Pietersen that, even after his maiden
first-class triple century, he was told by
new cricket director Andrew Strauss he
would not play for England this summer.
In revealing statement last month
Strauss said that Pietersens England
ambitions were still bleak, Strauss said
he and Tom Harrison, the England and
Wales Cricket Board CEO, met with
Pietersen May 11, after the batsman
scored 326 not out for Surrey against
Leicestershire.
Pietersen told media after the innings,
I want to play for England again soon,
but Strauss informed him he would not
feature in the summer test campaigns
against New Zealand and Australia.
Strauss said he offered Pietersen a
non-playing role with the limited-overs
team but was turned down.
Pietersen, dropped following the
2013-14 Ashes whitewash in Australia,

scored his first century of the county season last month and finished his innings
the following day unbeaten on 355, not
long after Strauss comments.
The turbulent relationship between
Pietersen and Strauss emerged before
a 2012 test series against South Africa.
Pietersen was dropped from England
before the opening encounter for sending messages to the Proteas regarding
Strauss, his then-captain and, like Pietersen, born in South Africa.
Pietersen returned to the squad in
2013 but a year later, he was discarded
again after Englands humiliating Ashes
tour, where the side was routed 5-0, and
won only one limited-overs game.
He was told he had no future with
England, and his divisions with the ECB
were aggravated by his autobiography,
released last October.
Pietersen wrote about a bullying
culture in the England side, and alleged Strauss was approached by team

members who were intimidated to field

the ball. Pietersen also hoped that if the
board changed then I really believe I
could play for England again.

Bayliss Named As New

England Head Coach

TREVOR BAYLISS has been appointed

as the first Australian to coach England.
The 52-year-old New South Wales
coach succeeds Peter Moores, whose
second spell ended in a sacking in early
May.
Bayliss led Sri Lanka from 2007-2011,
took temporary charge of Australia for
their Twenty20 series in South Africa
in 2014 and has coached Kolkata Knight
Riders in the Indian Premier League.
Its an honour to be appointed England coach, said Bayliss. I firmly believe that the team has a bright future.

Anfield Bids A
Heartfelt Farewell
To Steven Gerrard

RR By Steve Douglas

709th and next-to-last game for his

hometown team but couldnt conjure up
one final moment of brilliance at a stadium he has illuminated so many times.
Instead, the 34-year-old former England captain produced a fairly low-key
display in a game that ended Liverpools
slim hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. Manchester United Liverpools great rival has qualified instead.
Gerrard left Liverpool after the 6-1
loss at Stoke on the final weekend of
the Premier League season to join the
Los Angeles Galaxy here in the US. Gerrard scored his teams only goal.

CARRYING one daughter on his shoulders and with his two others by his side,
Steven Gerrard circled the field inside
Anfield and received the acclaim of his
adoring Liverpool fans one last time.
Red-and-white scarves were thrown
in front of him. He was serenaded with
songs. Teammates past and present followed him around, all wearing jerseys
with Gerrard 8 on the back, and were
careful to keep their distance, letting a
club icon savor the moment.
It was the end of an era at Anfield on
May 16 as Gerrard played his final home
match in the red of Liverpool he has
represented with distinction for 17 years.
The game ended in a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace, but that didnt really matter to
Liverpools fans. This special Saturday
was all about saying farewell to arguably
the clubs greatest ever player.
Ive been dreading this moment,
Gerrard said, addressing the fans, and
Im absolutely devastated I wont be playing in front of these supporters again.
DISAPPOINTMENT
There were no tears from Gerrard
perhaps out of disappointment at failing
to mark his last home appearance with
a win just from his three-year-old
daughter Lourdes, and probably many
inside the ground on an emotionally
charged evening.
These supporters here stand out
more than any, Gerrard said in his
final words to the crowd of 44,673. Ive
played in front of most supporters around
the world, but you are the best.
Gerrard played all 90 minutes in his

Tennis: Andy Murray Wins In

Munich & Madrid

ANDY MURRAY captured the Munich Open

early last month, beating Germanys Philipp
Kohlshreiber 7-6, (7-4), 5-7, 7-6, (7-4) in
the final for the very first clay court victory of
his career. In fact, Murray, became the first
Briton to win a clay-court final since Buster
Mottram back in 1976. It was the 32nd ATP
win for the Scot, whose game is now steered
by new coach Jonas Bjorkman, as former
coach Amelie Mauresmo, takes leave to
have a baby. Earlier, Murray ousted Mischa
Zvereva of Serbia, the Czech, Lukas Rosol,
and Roberto Bautista The Scot won his
second clay-court tournament the following
week at Madrid in the Spanish Open, beating
Raphael Nadal 6-3, 6-2, in the final. Barely
two days after beat Kohlschrieber in Munich,
he faced the German in his opening match
in Madrid, which did not start until after midnight, which brought immediate ATP protests.
Murray beat Marcel Granollers of Spain on
the same day, before disarming Kei Nishikori
of Japan in the semi-finals. Heather Watson
went out in the first round of the ladies singles
beaten by Marianna Duque-Marim in three
tough sets. The Scots hectic schedule
continued at the Italian Open in Rome, where
he beat Frances Jeremy Chardy before pulling out of the tournament with exhaustion.

New Snooker Champion

The Betfred World Snooker Championships at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, April
16-May 4, witnessed a brand new champion,
as Stuart Bingham, claimed the snooker
throne with a 18-15 victory over Shaun
Murphy. The close encounter had Bingham
leading 14-11, then it went 15-15, before
the man from Basildon won the final three
frames. The 38-year-old Bingham became
the oldest champion since Ray Reardon
won here in 1978. His progress to the final
saw him beat Judd Trump in the semi-final,
and before that, Ronnie OSullivan and
Graeme Dott, two former world champions.
A display of utter calmness in the final frames
over-came an atmospheric tension amongst
the gathered spectators, as he collected the
winners purse of 300,000.

Cricket

The third and final Test against the West

Indies at Bridgetown, Barbados, saw a drastic second innings collapse by England, as
the Windies won by five wickets to salvage
the series 1-1. England 257 (Alistair Cook
105) and 123. West Indies 189 and 194-5
at close. The first Test was drawn, while

England won at Grenada by nine wickets.

Press reports surfaced that the new ECB
President Colin Graves, briefed the England
side before the series calling the West Indies a
mediocre side that should be easily disposed
of. Apparently, England players were not
happy with the Yorkshiremans straighttalking pep-talk. When the hosts got wind of
it, Jason Holder whose 103 not out, resulted
in a tie at Antigua, tweeted some mediocre
side eh. Englands scheduled ODI against
Ireland in Dublin was washed out.

County Cricket Changes

Former Test batsman Andrew Strauss

was made director of cricket at the ECB
and immediately fired England coach Peter
Moores. Strauss other changes saw Ian
Bell removed as vice-captain from the
Test squad, and Stuart Broad removed as
skipper of Englands T20 side. The saga of
Kevin Pietersen who was dropped from the
England side in February of 2014, continued
as he slammed 355 not out for Surrey against
Leicestershire at the Oval. His return to form
has not impressed Strauss, who told him he
is not being considered for the home Tests
against New Zealand and Australia this
summer. Pietersens triple century was the
first one for four years in County cricket, while
his total rejection by Strauss has apparently
left the 34-year-old very angry and stunned.
Most cricket pundits feel Pietersen should
have his chance, while Australia relished
facing a Pietersen-less England,
New Zealand have arrived for an early tour
of England, where two Tests and five ODI are
scheduled. They opened at Somerset, winning by 66 runs. New Zealand 237 and 310.
Somerset 204 and 277 (James Hildreth 115)
at close. The second game at Worcester, the
Kiwis won by 15 runs. New Zealand 261-9
dec and 275 (Martin Guptil 150)-9 dec.
Worcestershire 291 (Ross Whitely 103 not
out) and 230 at close.
Pakistan won their short two match Test
series in Bangladesh. They drew the first
match but won the second game in Mirpur, by
328 runs. Pakistan 557 (Azhar 226, Younus
140, Shafiq 107)-8 declared and 195-6 dec.
Bangladesh 203 and 221.

Ennis-Hill Back On
The Track After Nearly
Two Years Off

OLYMPIC heptathlon champion Jessica

Ennis-Hill returned to the track for the
first time in nearly two years when she
finished third in the 100-meter hurdles
in a city-center meeting in Manchester
last month.
One of Britains best known female
athletes, she last raced competitively
in July 2013 a year after winning gold
at the London Olympics and has since
given birth to her first child, Reggie.
Ennis-Hill has a little over a year to
get back in top shape before the Rio de
Janeiro Olympics, and said it was good
to be back after clocking 13.14 seconds
into a headwind on a purpose-built track
in the Great City Games. Compatriot
Tiffany Porter won in 12.86.
Ennis-Hill said, I feel like its a starting point. I feel like I can build on that.
