CAREER ESSAY WRITING

III.Goals and Student Learning Outcomes:
GOAL: Students will write their essays utilizing Google Docs; they will share their documents
with the teacher so that necessary revisions can be made.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will demonstrate their abilities to complete a
complete and final draft of a written research essay that compiles all of the information they
have gathered so far. Students will demonstrate use of technology in writing their essay in
Google Docs and sharing it with the instructor.
Goal 1: Students will write a comprehensive essay that demonstrates thorough research

Student Learning Outcome 1: Students will have a final draft that they will continue to
work on correcting.
Student Learning Outcome 2: Students will have utilized Google Docs in order to share
their essays and complete their various revisions.

Learning Environment(s):

The learning environment will be in the classroom and at home. Students will be
working in the classroom to complete their written essays; they will also complete
work at home when revisions from instructors are made.

VI.

Diversity / Differentiation:
Students with disabilities may use a variety of assistive technologies that are
available to them; speech to text software, etc. can be utilized in order to write their
essays. Students will have support from resource staff in addition to instruction
from general education staff.

VII.

Technology Inclusion:
The instructor will have access to every student Google Doc and will be able to
monitor progress appropriately. Students will be using information from the
Notability Application on the IPad to transfer the information to their Google Doc.

VIII. Prior Knowledge: Students have completed their research for the career which they are
interested in and have compiled information necessary to complete their essay.
Lesson Placement in the Unit: This is lesson 4 of 10.

Procedures:
1. Lesson Introduction / Anticipatory Set:
The instructor will ensure that every student has their research completed and compiled
into an organized manner. The instructor can allow for time for students to prewrite and
complete prewriting activities. Students should be prepared to write an essay.
2. Direct Instruction:
The instructor should guide students in prewriting activities in order to prepare them for
essay writing. The students should be prepared from their previous nights homework
in order to write their essays. The instructor should have access to every students
Google Doc in order to observe progress, they may also observe by walking around the
classroom answering any questions that arise and giving insight and direction to
students writing.

3. Student Interaction with lesson content / Guided Practice:
Students will have access to their Notability notes and they will also have access to
their prewriting activities. Students will have access to their Google Docs which will be
shared with the instructor. Students will be spending most of their classroom time
working on writing their essays.
4. Independent Practice:
Students should be working independently during this instructional time. Students
should be focusing on writing their essays. Students should for no reason be working
groups, however they should ask questions if they need clarification on their writing.
5. Review / Closure:
Students should have the majority of their essays written by the time that class is over.
If students have not completed their essays, then they will finish writing them for
homework. The instructor should make comments and correct student essays as soon
as possible so further revisions could be made. (Note: this lesson may take two class
periods and depending on skill level of the class revisions may be made during
additional instructional time.)
6. Presentations:
Students should present their essays to the instructor via Google Docs. Students will
not be presenting their essay information to the class until their final presentations.
