BISC 101 Tutorial 11

1) What are the 3 types of natural selection? Give an example of a possible scenario where each
one would occur.

2) What is adaptive radiation?

3) What is a species according to the biological species concept?

4) What are the main factors that can lead to speciation within a population? (How does a
population diverge into two different species?)

5) What is the difference between a subspecies and a morphotype?

6) What is co-evolution? Give an example and explain how it works.

7) Given that the alleles for flower colour are noted by dominant (R) for red, recessive (r) for
white. Assuming Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and the allele frequency of 0.62 for (R) and 0.38
for (r), give the genotypes and phenotypes for the F1 generation.

8) What are the assumptions that are made in a mark-recapture estimation of a population?

9) In a mark-recapture project, we captured and tagged 22 animals. A month later, at the same
location we caught 27 animals, 4 of which are tagged. Give an estimation of the total
population.

10) If the total population is 1032 and during the second time we went out into the field we
captured 78, 9 of which were tagged. Estimate the number that we tagged the first time we
marked and recaptured.
