along with the Pythagorean theorem to
solve problems involving right triangles.

I. Pythagorean Theorem
The Pythagorean Theorem states that in a right
triangle, the sum of the squares of the lengths
of the legs equals the square of the length of the
hypotenuse.
a2 + b2 = c2 Can a triangle have the
lengths 2, 5, and 6?
Why or why not?
Could it be a right
triangle?

You Do

Famous Train Problems!

Two trains leS Metropolis at the same 7me.
One traveled south at 50 mph. The other
traveled east at 40 mph. How far apart were
they aSer 3 hours?

II. Pythagorean Inequali7es

A. You can use the side lengths to classify
triangles by angles.
B. 3 Types of Triangles
1. If =+, then the is a right .
2. If <+, then the is an acute .
3. If >+, then the is an obtuse .

Note: C must be the LONGEST side!!!!

You Try
Tell if the measures 5, 7, and 10 can be the side
lengths of a triangle. If so, classify the triangle as
acute, obtuse, or right.

We Do

Tell if the measures 11, 18, and 34 can be the

side lengths of a triangle. If so, classify the
triangle as acute, obtuse, or right.

We Do
Tell if the measures 7, 11, and 15 can be the
side lengths of a triangle. If so, classify the
triangle as acute, obtuse, or right.

III. Trig Deni7ons

A. Trigonometry is the study of the rela7onships
between the sides and angles of right
triangles.
B. The hypotenuse is always across from the
right angle and is the longest side.
C. The adjacent side is next to the angle you are
referencing.
D. The opposite side is across from the angle
you are referencing.

Example

Iden7fy the opposite side, adjacent side

and the hypotenuse for the given angle.
